The one thing these locks have going for them is that they can be programmed with any number of numbers needed. I think you could do one number or all of the buttons on this, and anything in between. It's a security thing. 😉 Jokes aside I used to have access to some pretty hairy information that required a high clearance rating. Thing is with a lot of these things you really do not want to know what's in there, and for that my memory worked just fine. People could give me their passwords and ten seconds later I might remember if it started with a letter or a digit, but never more than that. If I had to enter the same password ten or more times I might be able to remember it for an hour, but that's about it. Always amazed people how I could forget password and codes almost as fast as they were read to me. Unfortunately this skill also applies to phone numbers and pin codes, so I have to keep everything like that written down somewhere, which is less than optimal...

It will release the U shaped top. 3. Use a flashlight for light in the back hole or the top hole. And look at the other. 4. Use a note pad to notated what's pointed up or down, remember. There's an even faster and easier way - just hold pressure on the open latch, then gently tap each button. Buttons which are part of the combination will be tighter and not depress as deeply. Release pressure on the latch and press the tightest button. Repeat until open. Having never seen one of these before and without any googling I had one open in under 30s! I definitely would not recommend them!

Thanks. Your technique worked better than the lawyer's - no offense to the lawyer. Just to clear up any confusion: 1. Push down on the latch that is used to open the lock (the latch with the triangle) - hold down on the latch. *2. While holding down on the latch, press all of the buttons one at a time and feel for any buttons that are harder to press or don't feel like they really go down at all. *Take your time on number 2 and repeat the process until you can feel about 4 numbers that are harder to press than the other buttons. 3. Release the latch with the triangle. 4. Press down on the small latch at the bottom that is marked "C." 5. Press the buttons that felt the tightest (it will probably be 4 buttons only but it might be more than 4 buttons). 6. After you have pressed the buttons that you think are the correct combination buttons, press down again on the top latch with the triangle. 7. Open the lock. 8. Throw the lock in the trash can and find a really good location to hide your spare key.

It worked! Can't believe it. LOL. My friend was going to throw one away because he lost the code years ago. It was on his elderly mother's house for emergencies. . It's just like the one in the video and it took me about 30 minutes to pick it. I really thought this guy on the video was making it up. It really worked. After I opened it, there is a little plastic tool that has "recode tool" on it so you can recode to whatever you want. I feel like I hit the jackpot when it actually worked. The code on the one I have was 1-3-4-6. I kept feeling the keys over and over to see if I could notice any differences between the keys. I did try something and it helped me. After I pushed the top row of buttons, I pressed on the thing he talks about and then I released it and pressed again, I helped me identify which buttons were NOT in a bind.

My comment isn't about this particular box, but I've noticed this exploit with key boxes before. The fact that the combo doesn't have to be in order is a huge weakness. We rented a house in a resort town for a weekend and were supposed to pick up a key at the realty office. They had a wall of lockboxes with a similar keypad opening scheme. My friend who had rented the place told me the combo and it wouldn't open. While everyone was freaking out thinking we wouldn't be able to get the keys until the next day (when the office opened) just for fun I entered my bank PIN number and the box popped open. Later it turned out that the number I entered wasn't even the exact correct code, (it was supposed to be a calendar date, basically) but it was the right numbers and since the order doesn't matter... it worked.

Not necessarily. But it lowers the probability. 6 numbers out of 12 = 12 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 different codes = 57 different combinations. It’s less than 12*11*10*9*8*7 (which you would get with order-sensitive combinations) but it’s a masterlock anyway.

Edit/TLDR: I finally got it after I took the doorknob and lock off the door so I could work on the lock in the comfort of my kitchen instead of bending over my door in 40˚ weather. What I learned: When looking for free travel the buttons can be deceiving. I found the binding buttons usually only offered resistance at the very bottom of travel, and it usually felt like you were nudging the plate away. The free (i.e. combination buttons) ones felt 'lively' and you could lightly press them and they would bounce back freely with full springiness. The binding ones felt dead at the bottom. It was often very subtle, and I had to sometimes start from the bottom row and work my way up because if you've got the wrong buttons pushed from 1-9, the #, 0, * buttons won't give good feedback. Otherwise LPL's technique is brilliant as usual, you just have to develop a feel for the lock, and once you get it open or can start with one you've set the combo on yourself, you can develop a feel for the difference between the combination (arrow down on back) and the dummy buttons (arrow up). Btw, it's easy to get tricked by a row that has no numbers set. If all the way at the bottom (#,0,*), like mine were, you can imagine binding where there isn't any.

Reminds me of a 10 button 'cylinder' on a holiday home we stayed at. It was made by the 'Keyless Lock Company". The 10 buttons were in a circle with an actuating handle in the middle which could also be pulled out slightly to reset the buttons. Wiggle the actuating handle and the four buttons to press also wiggled.

The pressure method didn't work, but knowing that the order of presses doesn't matter helped me open a GE Security keylock through sequential trial and error, in only 37 of a maximum 120 tries to get our backdoor key that has been hidden in this key lock for over 5 years. I knew they likely only used a 3 digit combination and I was correct.

@@antoy384 You can use the formula for a combination since it is orderless (if order matters use the permutation formula instead). If there are always 5 numbers in the combo with no repeats out of 12 you get 12! / (12 - 5)! * 5! = 12! / (7! * 5!) = (12 * 11 * 10 * 9 * 8) / (5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1) = 95040 / 120 = 792 possible combinations.
