people falsely claiming that Black men don't experience texturism as if people weren't making fun of Kevin Durant's hair and telling him to brush it so it doesn't look so "nappy"....there are so many examples, especially ones I've experienced, of Black men experiencing texturism...
@Calihon88
@Calihon88 Жыл бұрын
Oh men do most certainly experience texturism. In the Caribbean black boys are only allowed to have their hair short 2cm high. Non black children on the other hand can have their hair long… texturism is ingrained across the diaspora and our own people perpetuate it across both sexes! It just leaves us with generations of people who can’t do their own hair. Or their children for that matter. So the cycle continues.

I just don’t know why those people didn’t say, “you’re right Narada, I dont know your experience and I’m glad more light and hope more light will be shone on men in the NHC”. Like, we as BW hate when people try to dictate and dismiss our experiences so, the fact that those people were windmilling so hard is WILD and highly annoying to say the least. You were right when you said “sometimes its best to just sit back and observe”.

I don't mind in engaging in fruitful and meaningful discussion and debate, but when you clearly aren't informed and are ignorant on the subject and I have to spend time not only debating but also educating you on an emotionally charged topic, it's mentally exhausting

Flashback to male influence during the Motown Era. Most male groups felt the pressure to relax their hair to be more marketable. Record sales. Men get discriminated against historically.

You made great points here, Rada. We think of it being easier for dudes because "they don't care" when societal expectations contributed to why fades and rows were so popular. It really is apples to oranges.

men for sure deal with texturism and the same internalized dislike for their hair especially as it grows out ☕️

I remember this live, you gave me a new perspective on the natural hair community. Especially, when you mentioned men aren’t marketed in beauty. I mean Shea moisture has a complete men hair/body care line and no men promoting it.

Men in the natural hair community is like how locs are to the natural hair community, outta sight and outta mind. Then if we want to get into how gay male stereotypes play into the success of a platform that's a whole other conversation. Most women aren't interested in hearing what gay men have to say unless we are hella flamboyant, caricatures of gay culture, or shady/messy/comedic/entertaining. I've noticed this for some time now when my channel was at its peak when I was much more flamboyant, sassy, and femme. Now that I've toned it down its really only a more mature crowd that's stuck around. All you have to do is look at how many women flock to videos of men mocking black women for comedy, it's really disgusting and misogynistic. Hell even the straight men are doing it for views.

AfrikanHairGod, I agree with your points in this video. Full stop. I really do, because I feel passionate about going against the grain and breaking barriers. I absolutely HATE it when people put others in a box. I also hate how generic the media/market can be when it comes to beauty and cosmetics. I am happy to see men showing up more to the scene in fashion, makeup and hair. I have locs because of my attitude against fitting into the beauty and texture norm for people like me. Dreads are the only hairstyle I have worn, where I feel a more equal balance with men. I think our people need to do away with the taboos of Black men with longer hair of all kinds... including doing away with beliefs of what men should be, act and look like in order to be "proper men." I think these are times where companies appear to be in the market for the fashion and beauty-renegades more than ever. I say all of this while not having trust in commercialism to be fully inclusive.

75% of the black guy I have meet care about hair more specifically African American guys. They never miss an appointment at the barbershop. Men love to talk about their waves and edge up. Growing up I would sometimes go to the barbershop with my dad, and you could tell the guys had formed bonds and connections and got to catch up with each other while getting their hair done. As we know black men have been criticized for having long hair, so of course it would take more time for their numbers to grow within the natural hair community. Also these companies are looking for influencers who have their target audience aka women. Why would a company send someone $300 worth of products who is a man and have a considerable amount of male followers, the company could make more by just sending their products to a women. Is this morally right, no but business wise, yes. Unfortunately, have a man in a women targeted advertisement wouldn’t work socially so companies avoid doing this. 👀a lot of black women don’t want to see a black man with long hair because it makes them jealous. How is his hair longer than mine? How does he get to wear his natural hair out but I have to wear a wig or weave to be accepted? How does he look more beautiful and feminine than I do? Why can he manage his hair better than I can? Why does he have good hair and I don’t.
