I have a 10 month old baby son and seeing his development is truly eye opening. His default condition is happiness. He wakes up on a morning smiling. As soon as we go downstairs, he plays and is laughing and smiling. Throughout the day, he only gets upset when he is hungry or has tummy ache etc. As an adult, my default condition has been the complete reverse to this. I always think that I have to have something outside of me to make me happy. A well paid job, nice car, a holiday every year, the latest gadget, the latest clothes. If any of these things made us have lasting happiness then as soon as we have experienced them we wouldn’t need them again. Of course, this isn’t the case because after having the desired object for a while, we start desiring something else. The cycle never ends. My baby is my guru and is teaching me so much❤❤❤

The trouble is that most of us are struggling manfully to get by financially. An awful lot of people work hard, but they are not receiving much financial reward for their efforts. 'Thank you' cards don't pay for the roof over one's head, nor put food on the table. Eventually, the music stops and one is left with a predominantly fixed income which will, in large measure, condemn most people to a lifestyle which makes it difficult to rise above the task of just surviving.

He also missed a step in his logic right at the start, talking about young people needing to acquire skills while also being inherently happy. The system itself is the issue. It is anti-human.

Work three jobs. Buy nothing. Have only one child. Your wife needs to work. No vacations. Have no bastards. Vasectomy, tubal ligation, hysterectomy. Stop worshipping wealthy people. Stop listening to trash. Buy nothing except what you need. That is very little. Women need to work. Children need to work. That is normal.

Very very true. I work more than I ever have, make more money than I ever have, only to pay bills and have no time at home since I'm at work. And then when I am home, I'm usually sleeping because I'm so exhausted... I definitely don't get paid what I'm worth. In a lot of fields- we just don't. 😕

I've been SCREAMING this for YEARS. People forgot how to play. We forgot how to create. We forgot how to love. We forgot how to be. We forgot who we are in the name of money and working jobs that don't bring us joy. Then the end of our life comes, and we never lived. We only went through the motions. Since I was a kid, I realized this and would always say it. I'd argue with adults about it. And I'm still like this. I make art. It's what I love to do. I feel like I'm living when I create. When will we remember how to live and not just exist?

I retired two years ago and never looked back. Teaching is a hard job and as much as I loved the kids I disliked the job. The school policies and not being able to teach. Really teach. It has been such a hard go for over twenty eight ears. Now I rise everyday feeling like a song is about to unfold. A beautiful song. I do life. My life. No longer do I live to make sure others are happy with me. I now live for myself and my happiness. I love being out and about and meeting others but I don’t care to impress them. I just want to enjoy their company. Yes some days I just sit and read or paint or just out walking. It’s my life now and I’m loving it.

Yes, Ina, a rare quality indeed. Some channels have the likes of shouty Shola and Tessa Dunlop. Ugh Such clarity and calmness comes across. When Mo was talking about having so many billion heart beats, exchanging those beats for time doing certain things, and realizing we’re not using the time of those heart beats with important moments like family or usefully, then feeling miserable, really hit home with me. I’ve just retired after 47 years nursing, thinking I need to spend time on myself and my husband, having looked after so many others, and presently living with aged disabled parents. Other people still want us, adult children and new grandchildren. When do we , my husband and I not feel guilty about looking after ourselves.

When I was a kid I had one dream: to work for IBM because my dad did. Eventually, following a convoluted route, I got there. I worked my way up into a management position and secured an international assignment overseas to Budapest, still with IBM. I had my dream job, my dream car and I had paid off my mortgage by the age of 34. I wanted for nothing but happiness. I was not happy because I was not truly fulfilled. I quit, went backpacking to Asia, eventually become a scuba diving instructor working in Costa Rica and the Caribbean. Now I'm a school teacher in rural New Zealand. I've never felt happier or more fulfilled as I do now. Happiness costs. It costs in terms of opportunities to see family and old friends back in England. There is a price to be paid. But I can tell you that if you are prepared to pay the price, the outcome is more incredible than you can ever imagine. I would never trade my memories and experiences for anything. Yes, I could have had a nice house, a flashy car, designer clothes... but everything I have done and seen has been worth a thousand times that. Be brave, go for your life, because it is your only life.

@GreenDemon618
@GreenDemon618 9 ай бұрын
You’re therapist told you the truth. “Being” is enough to be happy, but don’t run from goals to avoid failure. Failure is to be treated like a diagnostics sheet. Take it to be analyzed and learn from it. Look into the Kapur method for learning. Your Therapist is right based on the facts about life. It has no universal philosophical meaning, and it is hard to spiritually satisfy everyone. It’s the “Delusions of Happiness”, we create our desired life and/or it is influenced by our environment. Compare the adult you with the child you. We change our values and thicken our skin for personal responsibility. Coming up I thought it was more tangible. Turns out much of adulthood for some is just a character you role-play as. The point I’m getting at is we change our perception of life with software changes(philosophy) in our brain. We nurture happiness and associate it with cues in our desired reality. More truth, we choose to give meaning to words, and we choose to accept the negative from them, If we didn’t choose our environment chose for us. You’re genetics are similar to a volume switch in response to your environment(epigenetic), but nurture is the most important factor. Studies are looking at hereditary mental disorders, and “sperm can pass on trauma”. But, just like genetic obesity, you can turn it off. Nurture is the most important. The control is in your hands for how you handle data, and convert input data to output data. You can set goals and look at them the same way you are happy about having no goals. You can avoid feeling like a failure, by treating it lesser like you said, and looking at it as a side quest generator for improvements. Statistics show the educated live less impoverished lives. Setting goals to push for more goals, continuing the primitive(dopamine) drive for success. Life can have straight lines, but it sometimes looks like a mental map of ruminating thoughts. Finding solutions still have a higher probability of being located when searched for. When you go to a therapist for depression they target negative rumination, the solution is found when you stop and/or examen. Just like your idea of goals and failures, but my view is positive.

Dear Mo and Rangan, thank you so much for this session. I lost 2 children myself (2008 and 2009) and when people ask how I survived.... I always tell them I had no other choice.... as a mother, you want to be dead as well, you want to go after them and care for them.... but life is just not willing to let you stop breathing all by yourself. It took me some years and Mo, as you said the pain stays, but it's the way you handle it that makes life livable. Now I think back, being grateful for the chance they gave me feeling like a mom. I now know I can handle everything life throws at me, 'cause the worst thing I already survived. Bless you and your families. You both are a blessing for this world.

One of the best podcasts I have heard in a long time 💕. I'm terrified that in my fifties I haven't accomplished any material stuff (house, , money, fancy car, etc) the sad thing is I don't even want those things, even though I am not going to get any younger, and it is important to have at least a place to stay for the last years of your life, the only thing I want on a daily basis, is to have the mental energy to wake up and exercise, and spend most of my time moving and reenergize myself, because it prevents me from being depressed, it prevents me from feeling a type of emptiness that hurts, and nothing can make me feel better, but physical movement. It's complicated, but listening to this podcast and reading the comments, I know I am not alone.

‘Events are neutral. It is the narrative we attach to them that we choose’. This is so empowering. Acceptance of what is true is key to opening up how we then deal with anything uncomfortable. Being a victim is as much a choice as being happy over any event. We are far too hyper focused on materialism as a means of success; happiness is the ultimate success.

Amazing podcast. Many people do confuse real happiness with the short temporary bursts of pleasure. They live a life of being ‘happy’ when things are going well and miserable when they believe things are not going as well because of their expectations and their sense of entitlement to how life ‘should be’ for them and it’s a real roller coaster ride. True happiness is more of a sense of overall peace and stability and being ok with ‘what is’ in the moment whether that is if your mind perceives it to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for you. It’s also not about not having or feeling any negative emotions such as anger or sadness etc, either. It’s just understanding their temporary nature, being ok with them as they are also ‘what is’ in the moment and then trying to let them go so that they don’t stay around longer than they need to. Normally our mind spins a story to constantly fuel them, which means they go on for longer, clouding our future judgements and therefore our actions. Much much easier said than done though and extremely difficult in some circumstances. I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering that some people have had or are going through and this podcast is a perfect example. Life does however get much happier once this is taken on as a daily practice, or it most certainly has for me.

so sorry for your loss, I literally cannot IMAGINE a life without my sister, she's my best friend, the only person I can be myself around etc. I don't even feel like myself if I'm unaccompanied by her presence even for a little while, its like my inner child is stored within her presence, if I lose her, I'll forever lose my inner child and most likely never feel like myself again and might even lose my will to live so I know how you feel, I really hope you can heal

Mo, here is a thing, so I'm an engineer, believe in all the laws of physics as we know them because they make my job work but this is a true story I swear. Whilst on an island in the South Atlantic 8000 miles away from my wife the cooks would make you anything you what asked for just once in your 4 month stay in this crappy place. I just love lemon meringue so opted for that and they done so well. Given the scarcity of lemons on his island and made a lemon meringue of perfection. Well I ate at and enjoyed it. We were allowed 1 phone call a week on the sat phone home (£1.50 a min) and called my my wife a couple of days later; during the conversation she said without any mention or prompt by me, "do you know I could taste lemon meringue the other day, really intense flavour from nowhere" this was just at the time I was eating it. I draw no conclusion apart from there maybe more than we understand in equations, so much we don't understand. Thanks for your frank conversation, we are all so much more than a very odd blob of mass held together by electricity.

Hi Rangan, I loved your question where you asked what if the person is already helping people in general but its not their calling. The answer in my view and experience is this - a human can help other humans being in any profile regardless whether its their calling/passion or not. However, when we help people in a subject area that we love and are passionate about; then its not just that we are making others happy; but instead, we earn happiness for ourselves. More than others! And if we are happy then its a lot easier to keep the world happy around us. regards

A lot of issues for me in life stemmed from high school where I felt inadequate and not part of the “in” group. It was after two divorces that I began to work on myself and do what made me happy, I came to know myself better, and I began to realize that material possessions did not make me happy, relationships made me happy. Also, I discovered that when we open up to life’s possibilities people come into your life. In the past I would have compared those people to the “perfect” people I wanted to be with, but I learned that nobody is perfectly happy and I started enjoying the people I was with.

I think its a better lesson to learn people to be happy with there job so they earn money where they can make there passion a reality with. Also a lot of people and children really don’t know what they are passionate about or want they want do because what they like at the moment aren’t jobs where they can get money with. Wonderful podcast! I love the analogy of heart beats being our back account in life. I really have learned a lot from this and this resonates with me very much. I just have to add that introverts and extroverts have very different ways of spending their time and that would be good to consider. I agree that introverts and extroverts alike would agree that many of our most meaningful life experiences are positive human interaction, memories with loved ones and family. For introverts in particular interaction is a balance though; we (I’m an introvert) love human connection and as much as those are many of our most prized memories, we need time in solitude on our own (away from others) to recharge and enjoy time alone. As much as my memories of interaction with my loved ones are top of the list; life would be out of balance if I didn’t have time alone to myself; I enjoy solitude and spending time in nature and art…. It’s like breathing for me. I actually sometimes find myself overwhelmed with social obligations where I meet and make memories with those I love, but I will always need to spend some of my heart beats without human interaction…I think for each introvert, that allotment of time will vary depending on how introverted they are. Many introverts are made to believe there is something wrong with them for not indulging more in social activities; there’s nothing wrong with opting out when you need some time to hang out with yourself…. That time is more for some than others. Extroverts and introverts alike are both wonderful and both different and can both still love each other despite differences. Life can be such a balance. It’s so important to spend your time in ways that make you happy. For anyone that hasn’t read the book ‘Quite’ by Susan Cain; it’s a great read. This is a lovely podcast. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom 🙏💚.
