I’ve only heard Wagging Tongue (aside from Ghosts Again) and it reminded me of Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth by Martin (off his Counterfeit EP). The quality was poor, so don’t hold me to that! 😂

26:43 Actually, if they really sing "creatures and everything" that can't be a direct quote from The Cure's "Disintegration" because that song doesn't include the word "creatures". I think you meant the line "I knew I would leave you with babies and everything".

New info: Appearance on Stephen Colbert show on 23rd Feb and invite by ticket lottery for Munich show 19th Feb. Hearing those touching stories and how listeners reached out DM to help them through loss it makes me wonder if Depeche Mode is actually French for comfort blanket. The power of music is amazing.

What is the meaning of "is actually French for comfort blanket" ?
@tokyoskyline1752
@tokyoskyline1752 Жыл бұрын
@@clemencezagorski71 Not sure if this is an ‘English thing’. During difficult times, whatever those may be, people reach out for support, reassurance, comfort, solace in something familiar to help get them through those times. In England we sometimes refer to these things as a ‘comfort blanket’. Hearing Jon read out those touching stories from the listeners, they have reached out to Depeche Mode for that purpose. Hence a humorous attempt, possibly a poor one, of playing with the correct meaning of Depeche Mode 'fast fashion’. In no way was it ever intended to undermine or mock anyone’s difficult circumstances, or national language, far from it. I know I have turned to their music and music in general to help me get through tough times and seek solace, or just to get a lift after a bad day at work. If this has caused anyone offence. Apologies. And I will be more than happy to edit or delete my post.

@@tokyoskyline1752 I absolutely dont feel offended. It was a real question. I was supposing that it was a local expression and I want to understand it. Now I know that it was a joke. Thank you for the clarification. 😀

Same here. In my close DM circle of friends (fair warning, some of us are Alan homers, haha), most of us are pretty pissed off. Why? The assumption is that Butler didn’t write the lyrics, but helped with the music. So, if he did, then Martin may need to write an open letter of apology to Alan and pay him a shit ton of royalties. Again…big assumption.

I agree : it seems to be as good as Violator. Martin Gore seems to be able to create melodies again. It's as if he had lost is talent for that during a long period. And now, it's back.

I was hoping for an album with a more layered, more full production. Personally, I don’t enjoy Depeche Mode “deconstructed”, or “raw/crunchy/underproduced”. I like it when there are different layers, sounds, and beats to explore with each new listen. This album, so far, sounds like a genuine return to form-strong harmonies, melodies etc. I also got tired of slow tempo “bluesy” stuff (delta machine), or political (spirit)…They are allowed to have their own opinions, but so am I. I still am somewhat conflicted about my Christian beliefs with Martins not-always-subtle digs at Christianity (blasphemous rumours, John the Revelator, even Ghosts again)…. sweet spot (violator, ultra, sofad)…

Couldn't agree more. I think the absence of depth, nuance, and atmosphere is attributable to Alan Wilder's masterful input. I also think Gore should be an equal opportunity agnostic, or whatever he is. Give some equal time to mocking Muhammed (PBUH), for instance.

Martin has said again in a recent interview that he's agnostic. He criticizes through many songs the Christian view of an "almighty god' that expects adoration, penance, and suffering for sins. Almost the entire SOFAD album can be interpreted as a critique of the Christian god. Ultra also has many stabs at Christianity. I'm a former Catholic (now agnostic), so feel even closer to Martin's lyrics amd agnostic views than ever.
@michiganmegomaniacs211
@michiganmegomaniacs211 Жыл бұрын
@@Benz74M How can someone claim to be an agnostic, and yet, take a particular interest in criticizing/critiquing a Christian God? Not Scientology mind you, no, not buddha, not Islam. I find that strange. Guess what? I don’t believe in the Easter bunny, I don’t believe in Santa, and so (frankly), I don’t waste my time on them. I find that behind every atheist and agnostic is someone who got burned by “religion”, and never experienced Jesus. I’m reminded of an article on Martin Gore from years ago that brought up the rejection he felt when attending a Christian church. It’s too bad. God loves him, and has a plan for him, but instead-he now uses his gifts in a worldly way. Are you this opposed to Islam? Hubbard?? No? Didn’t think so…God bless. I do appreciate your thoughts on this, but thoughtfully consider what I’m trying to say here.
