(105) John Paul and Craig (26th June 2007)

Sarah and Craig meet up with Melissa and Evan, two of Sarah's modelling friends. John Paul later joins them in Il Gnosh. Later, Craig goes to John Paul's house and says 'I Love You' to him for the first time. Craig then leads John Paul upstairs to sleep with him.

I love the way they both smile at eachother when they pause from kissing. I love the way that when sarah rings, craig looks at the phone, doesn't think twice about answering and just rests his head on JP's chest. Now that's love.

Though I have not watched many of the earlier episodes--and, frankly, the ones I watched did not interest me in the same way as this storyline did--I completely agree with what you write here. I just watched the whole storyline of John Paul and Craig again, and I became much more impressed with the character of Craig. Yes, he wants to have it all, but he is bemused by his very own feelings. It is, also, clear that he is falling deeper in love with John Paul as every day goes by.

Spike didn't really deserve it, but at the same time he's presented as an older Out guy who's been around the block and wasn't looking for anything serious when he hooked up with JP so it's not a huge tragic drama that he got shut out in the end. I feel like Spike's character is optimistic and carefree so he probably didn't stay down about it for long.

@@ssian5678 I think spike did actually wanted things to become serious with John-Paul he tried to act like his feelings were quite casually but his actions betrayed his true feelings he said to John-Paul so you think we've got a future he took John-Paul out for a special meal and said happy anniversary he tried to be a loyal and loving boyfriend he was gutted when he got dumped out of the blue spike remained hopeful that John-Paul would get back with him he was heart broken when he realised that John-Paul had left him for Craig and that John-Paul loved Craig that much he would rather share Craig with Sarah than have an exclusive relationship with him he realised he just compete with Craig for John-Paul heart i think John Paul took one look at Craig with the dorky yellow jacket and fell instantly inlove with him he wanted to protect Craig from sonny he became bestfriends with Craig in order to get close to Craig

Craig's character has a lot more depth than just being a 'jerk' The character of Craig had already been on the show 4 years prior to JP's arrival, so there was alot of character development, from a geeky, arrogant Dean, to a sexually confused man. Alot of people liked him for that development, and especially due to the way he matures in his return in 2008. It does help considering Guy is not lacking in the looks department, but Craig is a complex character, which alot of people like him for :)

Yeah once John-Paul and Craig started sleeping together they both seemed to have a one tracked mind funnily enough after Craig had come back from holiday John-Paul started to initiate most of their kisses when they were in Craig room together John-Paul goes to kiss Craig moves away and says not here John-Paul doesnt listen to Craig and says so stop me and begins kissing Craig neck to get him in the mood he continues to assault Craig neck with kisses until Craig gives and they end up in bed together once again Jack actually walks in on them whilst they are lying in bed together John-Paul hides under the covers and jack thinks that it is Sarah it would of been quite funny if Sarah would of walked into the dog at that moment jack would of been very shocked i don't think he would of given the game away but he definetly would of questioned Craig about it later on i don't reckon he would of guessed that Craig was sleeping with his bestmate though

It's nice to see that even if Craig can't admit what he wante JP knows his true feelings anyway. Gorgeous kiss and ADORE the scene at the end where Craig ignores his phone knowing it's Sarah, and rests his head contented on JPs chest.

@SteffyPlum I think Craig went a bit mental as you said ever since JP declared his love for him, cos Craig's character in the past was kind of a dork who was used and abandoned for the 2 girls he dated and suddenly he has the hottest girl on school as his girlfriend and the collest guy saying he's in love with him. It fucked up with his head I think, but I never doubted he loved JP more. He just didn't know how to handle the situation.

Yes, exactly. People forget that Craig was treated as a bit of a loser at school and in the village when he was younger (even getting bullied by classmates) and didn't have any close friends. It's a shock to him that when he gets to highschool he suddenly has a popular cool best mate and a gorgeous equally well-liked girlfriend, and he is loathe to let go of either of them because they make him feel good about himself for once.

@@ssian5678 I feel differently i think once he realised he had romantic feelings for John-Paul as well he fell very deeply inlove with him and wanted to be with him and not Sarah but he was so frightened how his very homophobic family and others around the village would treat him that he clung to Sarah because she was the perfect cover once John-Paul revealed their relationship Craig finally stopped lying and admitted to his homophobic family that he was inlove with John-Paul and he was the one he wanted to be with and not Sarah Sarah was even willing to take Craig back she begged him 3 times to take her back and he turned her down saying that he wanted to be with John-Paul He wasn't ready how ever to be touchy feeling with his new boyfriend in public so John-Paul dumped him at the airport because he didn't want a relationship behind closed doors once Craig returned and told John-Paul he couldn't stop picturing what their life together could of been like he asked John-Paul whether he'd wished he had come with him John-Paul no i mean what difference does it make anyway Craig grabbed John-Paul by the face jusy swear that you dont want me and I'll walked out of here and you'll never see me again just say it John-Paul kissed Craig passionately and they slept together again at the trainstation Craig kissed John-Paul without any prompting from John-Paul and they boarded the train holding hands looking like any other couple inlove he even made a steve McQueen joke joking that John-Paul should tell people he's his cousin steve as everyone thinks im straight John-Paul exasperated what Craig im messing and throws his arm around John-Paul who laughs and kisses Craig neck

I wish they'd talked more like this rather than always fighting and having sex! This is one of the only episodes where Craig gives us a bit of insight into what's going on in his head, but even that doesn't make much sense. He tells JP that it's different with him, not just about sex - implying that it is with Sarah. But then he goes on to say that he does love Sarah, contradicting what he just said. I wish JP pushed him to explain a bit more when Craig kept saying it was 'different' with Sarah. He said it a lot but never explained why. Craig's confusion is obvious but JP must have been confused by all this too. I think JP's confusion is often overlooked in this storyline.

Yeah! I guess I interpret that statement a bit differently though. When he says that "it's different with you" to John Paul, I actually think he's referring to (and I know this is a little NSFW but I swear I read it in an interview a long time ago where Guy says he thinks Craig is the bottom in the relationship) the different role he plays sexually with Sarah and John Paul. Then when he says "it's not just about the sex" and that he loves him, I see that as him obliquely apologising for trying to get John Paul to accept being his dirty little secret and nothing more a few weeks back. To me this is one of the greatest McDean scenes because of the honesty and vulnerability with which the characters treat each other.

I love this clip, craig loves JP, alot more than Sarah. There is know way, a straight man would ever want or love a gay man and still call himself straight. He's with Sarah, only because she every man dream. And Craig has always wanted the perfect girlfriend. but, had trouble keeping them or making them happy. With JP, there's know reason to try so hard. he's him self. Not paranoid. Which is a huge part of who he is.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but I think John Paul sees it as a slightly different situation because he's openly gay and Spike knows about his attraction to Craig, and in that moment the two of them (John Paul and Craig) are not sleeping together, so even though they did in the past it's not an ongoing betrayal. John Paul views Craig as like him: a gay man struggling to come out. So he sees Craig as lying to Sarah constantly in a way that he isn't to Spike (since he'd told Craig that he wouldn't sleep with him again unless they could be a proper couple). And yeah bisexual erasure is a problem in a lot of media. I'm really really giving John Paul the benefit of the doubt here though. He does have a hypocritical streak to be honest.
