Showdown! Many of you have asked to see the GRIPO Kinetic try to split Elm. Elm is a nasty, stringy wood. Tune in and see how it performs. In addition to trying to split Elm, I also test the GRIPO Kinetic Splitter on Cherry and Yellow Birch. A Happy Thanksgiving wish to all our viewers from the US of A!! Enjoy the time with your families. Cheers and all the best!

You have a habit of jamming every piece of wood into the wedge on all of your videos...Why do you waste so much energy? Just watching you beat your arms and shoulders up like that is crazy! that's what the machine is supposed to do...relax and save your arms.

I notice the main beam is quite narrow. No side supports to stabilize the wood so the jambing of the wood into the wedge is necessary to keep the wood stable and the hand out of danger. That makes sense right?

Welding up larger table for the split wood to rest upon would be good or have an upward slope on the outside edge. You need a pickeroon too and a little pocket on the machine to keep it in so it is at hand without having to bend down all the time.

Good evening David. I prefer a hydraulic myself but it was good to be able to try this out. It turned out we found the bearings had a bunch of dirt in them - possibly from me trailering it around I guess. It was the first time it wasn't fully retracting so I knew something was wrong. Thanks for the comment and have a good week!

That was dried out dead Elm, put some fresh green Elm in it and watch it grunt and say NO. I have a 30 ton hydraulic wood splitter and it will wade through Hickory like hot butter, but Elm is the only wood I have ever put into it that it could not split. Wound up having cutting it into quarters with a chainsaw. Toughest wood there is.

Why do you have to slam the block into the wedge? Wasting a lot of energy I would think. I have never done that and if the splitter is doing its job it shouldn't be necessary. Hard on the back over time too. If it isn't broke don't fix it is why I would take a 35 ton splitter anytime and if I wanted speed I would get a two way one although I think being able to do vertical and saving the lifting is more important. Depends on what species of elm you were slitting also. American is the toughest by far, then white and red can be pretty easy to split unless it has some twist or knots but that's true of other wood species as well. I wonder if being frozen helps sheer through better without as much tearing? That and what looks like a narrower wedge than most splitters have help it slice through rather than try to force it apart more. Whatever the key ingredients, it did well!
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Good evening Digby. Thanks - not sure what type of elm we have but I know that whenever we are splitting an elm, we always have a hatchet or sledge at the ready. It did pretty good I have to admit. I've been watching a few of your kinetic splitter videos. Definitely faster than my 20ton single pass. I'm wondering if you have to jam the wood into the wedge every time like you do? That seems like it would be hard on the back after a while. Does it lose a lot of energy if you don't jam the wood into the wedge first?
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Good morning Walter and thanks for watching. I think it is best to jam the wood in as you don't want it to roll sideways while the ram comes out so i make sure it is stable and set before pulling the trigger. And yes, to be honest, it gets a little tiring after a while. It doesn't;t lose energy if you don't jam the wood but if the wood slips sideways and the ram hits it on an awkward angle, the round can possibly shoot off the side of the unit. Hope that helps and thanks for the comments and questions. Cheers!

Hey good afternoon ST! Thanks for checking out the site! I still have more work to do to it but its a start. Good call on not wearing the snow pants. I only wear mine when snowblowing cause of the spray back (plus they are toasty warm) but not for working outside. I always wear thermal underwear (pants and shirt) underneath plus I have outdoor socks on and my workbooks are insulated, and I always wear a flannel shirt. You might also notice I also wear a red and black flannel jacket overtop or bring it with me. The reason is because when you are working on something, your body temp goes up so I take the flannel jacket off but when you take a break or slow down, I am able to put the flannel jacket back on. Helps to keep moderated and keeps the flu away. :)). On really cold days I will also wear a winter work coat. I used to wear the old thermal underwears we always had growing up (you know, the white double knit ones) but a couple of years ago I found a "Thinsulate" set of bottoms and top. They are really thin, way more comfortable and they lock in the heat really well. They were a little more expensive but 3 years running - no rips - and still working great so well worth the extra. I can't remember the brand but if you want to know, I can let you know in a few days when I am back at the cabin. Thanks for watching. All the best!

Yes, Hedge burns hot, long and the coals last all day. I put 3, 8" un split Hedge logs in the stove this morning (over 5 hours ago) and it's still blowing hot air. I cut, split and burn it green. The straight chunks split better than green Elm but, they are a knurly twisting tree. They don't rot and cutting them off at the ground wont kill them. Here in KS they have been used as fence posts for a long time. I know of a few that have been holding barbed wire for over 80 years and you cant push em over.

Morning MJM. That's a good question. Not sure of the answer. We did split some elm with the Dual Split during the summer and it got through it but wish I had the kinetic to try it then too. Have a great weekend!

I wonder if you know how it would go splitting Australian Buloke. My little 9ton hydraulic splitter won't look at it; it's just too hard and as for the Fiskars 8lb maul; forget it!!!

-8 and no jacket . That's what you call a real Canadian . It's not that bad as long as there's no wind . That GRIPO sure looks pretty good . I'd be afraid to bring that elm into the house with all of those bugs on it . If I remember correctly you have a problem with your chute on the snow blower because of the heavy grease .
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hey good evening Henry. You are right on the mark. I would not bring that wood into the house until winter temps. But yes, I had the same issue with the grease they put on the chute. But since I scraped out the grease and use the silicon lubricant now, it solved the problem. All good. And now that I have about a foot of snow, I am blowing the first snow of the season tomorrow. It's negative 17 now but I am still pretty pumped for the first snowblower tomorrow. Cheers and stay warm!

Hey good morning Richard. Yes, it appeared the grease on the mechanisms and ram etc got really gummy and thick. I probably should have cleaned it off and used a lubricant. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Have a good one!

Nice job... You are right about the grease... Some guys use dry lubricant like graphite in the winter on those kinetic machines. I know the unit is only on loan to you but if you owned it you may want to sharpen the wedge. I have a small electric splitter and it made a difference. Don't put a razor edge on it but take the 'round' off the wedge and the job will get done better. Those machines work hard. Michael from Alberta
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks Michael. Good idea about the graphite. I should have known better because last winter I had a piece of equipment and found the same thing - needed to remove the grease and replace it with a silicon lubricant and it performed great after. I should have done the same with the kintetic. Keep warm out there!

Great video! Yep you need a light oil in those temps....may I suggest you put a wagon or trailer just in front of your splitter, then you toss it not on the ground but into something that is at waist level...thus saving you from a lot of bending over later!

I'd like to know about your wood shed How much does it hold? Do you season your wood in it?
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Mike! It's Guy's shed actually. It holds about 22 cord I believe in the front 2 sections ( to the left and right of the boiler) and I am not sure how much the back section can hold (it's behind the main section on the right). Guy stacks all his wood in there. We've fallen a bit behind the last few years so the wood is not as seasoned as it should be. Hope that helps - thanks for watching and for the question. Cheers!

I've a couple of species of trees for you to split with the kinetic, green white oak or hickory.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hey good evening Craig. I wish I had some of those but we have none of those species in this area to try. Whether single, dual or kinetic split, it is always helpful to folks to test them on different types of wood. For some reason, I have almost no Oak on my property. I spotted a sapling starting to grow on the front of my property this past summer and was so concerned that I built a wooden cage around it to make sure it had chance to grow.

Looks like a great splitter. Just a side note, those grubs get into any wood that has been cut for awhile or standing dead. Flat head borers. We have tons of them in oak, cherry, hickory logs that have been cut for 6-8 months or longer. We feed them to our chickens for treats....

I agree with Bill, that small tray and only being 20-24 inches off the ground is what would make me walk right by this for a 22-35 ton hydraulic splitter. That's why I just bought a Ariens 22-ton log splitter.. Bought the tray and fenders and still only have 1,100. in it, and no back problems from bending over picking up wood that falls off the splitter.

Hey good evening MO. That surprises me. I have never used another one but this has a 3 second cycle time. I can't imagine something faster than that. How fast are most kinetic's cycle time?
