The live action movie over simplified the story too much in order to make it appeal more to the average movie goer, but it back fired and made the movie too generic and doesn't stand out like the original movie did.

Yah I have to agree. They made it into milk for the new comer. But honestly that's not always good. The complexity made it super interesting..even the series version's weren't dumbed down. And music was kickass.
@sigurdtheblue5 жыл бұрын
It's kind of dumb to simplify a movie that was already able to capture mass appeal not too long ago and had its successors become well known for a long time for doing the same thing. The high technology appeal is something that is no longer new however, so I do think they needed to mix up something. I didn't watch the movie so I'm not going to say whether they didn't find a good idea or not.

I'm personally sad the live action movie of GitS is doing poorly since I think it was well done for an adaptation. It was enjoyable, had great visuals, and stood well enough on its own with its story, even if it was a combination of other stories. We finally get a good adaptation of an anime, and we can't even show Hollywood that this movie was indeed a step in the right direction, despite people's nitpicking and blah blah blah about race.
@ThePedroDB7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I'm a big fan of GitS anime and wasn't disappointed by the live action movie. For someone seeing the live action as an introduction to the franchise, it was a solid 'standalone' (no pun intended..) offering. I also thought the reuse of various parts of the anime story lines to construct a new(ish) story was quite clever. If you just sat, watched it and enjoyed the visual spectacle, it was pretty cool. If you wanted a really good storyline or a live action homage to the original GitS anime, you would likely be disappointed. I thought that giving the live action movie a 'superhero origin style' storyline was a bit of a mistake but if it leads to a sequel, that would be a bonus
@JHMBB27 жыл бұрын
I feel the exact same way. I was expecting a disaster, but ended up loving it. I liked the original 1995 anime, but loved the comic. Unfortunately, I doubt Scarjo will be interested in reprising this role if in the wild off chance they decided to do a sequel.
@blacksun38847 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it released in a time where SJW bitches have enough power to sway public opinion and just when the backlash against Hollywood for whitewashing characters is really hitting its stride. In this case I have no qualms about race because it is faithful to the ideas in the series proper and the creators themselves have no problem with scarjo in the role.
@MainSeale7 жыл бұрын
a well-done adaptation... sorry but when I saw the live action movie my first thought after it finished was "Shouldn't this just be called "The Shell" because it certainly didn't have the Ghost of Gits whatsoever". Sure it was a cool action movie, but, just as ThePedroDB said, they gave it a 'superhero origin style' storyline, just like all the other bland action movies Hollywood makes nowadays. GitS was thought provoking, detailed, and deep, and they butchered it. The whole "Whitewashing" fiasco had little to nothing to do with it being received badly, it was just a hollow shell Hollywood movie with the GitS name slapped on. Makes me fearful that they're eyeing Akira next...
@devilkicksanji27 жыл бұрын
The Pac For me, it was well done, especially as an anime adaptation. I think the best adaptation utilizing anime/manga was Edge of Tomorrow, but GitS was entertaining nonetheless. Is it a good substitute for the original? No way. But again, both the original and this one tackled 2 different themes in sense as well, while the original tackled what it means to be human and have a soul, the live action tackled the meaning of one's identity and how it defines them. Yeah, it beat the audience over the head with it, but it's still subjective and I can at least walk away saying I spent money and enjoyed the movie, rather than be disappointed or pissed.

As someone who watched the '95 film when I was six years old (in '99), I personally enjoyed the live action movie. While it did have a few things I'd criticize it for -- some characters were poorly explained (didn't even know Borma was in the movie), Saito's involvement in the end scene was a little oddly placed -- it did a good job of being faithful to both the '95 and SAC without being corny and too unoriginal. It wasn't great, but it was good.

If you are a fan of the original and enjoyed the other films and series, give the live action film a watch. If you are new to ghost in the shell, this is a good introduction to the series. Ignore the die hards who are just up in arms that scarlet johansson is white and if your interested give it a watch, don't let others discourage you from watching a good movie just because they didn't get their way.

gits is just a perfect franchise where every installment (not the live action) is masterpiece level and all for different reasons, it never feels stale. Gits SAC has great introspection and an amazing villain, and the best ost Gits 2nd Gig is an amazing story with real world implication greater than any with arguably higher stakes than any other gits story with unique situations at every turn not just action but diplomatic and beautiful art Arise has great action and a really cool series of twists, very pragmatic Gits 1st movie is obviously timeless Solid State is like a wonderful continuation of the tv series with an amazing story and really heavy emotions, it legit made me cry and my second of all has to be Innocence as it is just emotionally the heaviest and the art is the most beautiful, and accomplishes scenes that would be hard to do today with computers let alone done by hand all those years ago.

Point #48 doesn't seem correct. Are you sure that Masamune Shirow was inspired by Koestler because Shirow's use of "ghost in the shell" seems to apply more to Ryle? Explanation: Gilbert Ryle, a philosopher, invented the phrase "ghost in the machine" and published it for the first time in his 1949 book "The Concept of Mind". In his book, he argues that the Descartes idea of dualism (the mind is separate from the body) is false and he coined the phrase "ghost in the machine" to illustrate what he believed is the absurdity of dualism. Arthur Koestler comes along much later and borrows Ryle's phrase for the title of his 1967 book "Ghost in the Machine". But Koestler seems to assign a new meaning to the phrase. He believes that our human brain evolved from the primitive brains of earlier, less advanced, organisms. This gave rise to a conflict between our higher rational mind and our lower primitive mind (the primitive mind didn't disappear when the higher mind appeared). Koestler believed this conflict explained the self-destructive behavior of humanity (in particular, the "cold war" between the Soviet Union and the U.S.). Reading Shirow's original mangas, it appears to me that "ghost in the shell" refers to Ryle's idea -- not Koestler's. But, instead of using the phrase to argue against dualism, Shirow does the opposite and argues in favor of dualism. In Shirow's stories the mind is separate from the body. How else could Motoko exist with almost no remaining human tissue (except a portion of her brain). And how could Motoko merge with the Puppet Master and give birth to sentient offspring in the virtual world? It's unfortunate that Shirow isn't available to share his insight so we could know the true nature of the influence of "ghost in the machine" to "ghost in the shell".

Masamune Shirow is such an amazing artist. Their art definitely stood out, but I didn't know it was because they were an art tool extraordinaire. Perhaps I should learn more art tools in honor of Shirow. The fact that they are influenced by magazines on unique technologies and they don't try to aim for realism in their science fiction designs is also a good educational fact for how many creative minds work since I don't believe a lot of very complex works and designs are created in isolation, but I do value pure works over complex ones, which is why I prefer Mamoru's 1995 film over the other Ghost in the Shell works. I think a complex works only serve to help a few very dilligent "academic" types. A more pure work, to me, can be the gateway to deeper thoughts that guide someone through a complex world.

I honestly am really curious about the live action film. Partly want to see it because of all the controversy surrounding its production, but also want to see it because I didn't actually like the 1995 anime one. Both when I was a kid watching it on Teletoon, and as a young adult watching it in a University level class. But that's just my unpopular opinion.

The anime series STAND ALONE COMPLEX and THE LAUGHING MAN case were amazing complex but we'll rounded. You might like those. I liken it to CSI meets twilight zone meets steam punk meets robo cop.

I know it gets a lot of hate, but the continuation of SAC in that Netflix GITS series was really good. The animation style takes a little getting used to, but besides that it is really done well and the actual continuation of SAC. The live action was ok, I know it gets a lot of hate as well, but it was pretty decent and Scarlett did a decent job as Motoko.
