In this video Doctor Andrea Furlan explains the difference between hurt and harm. When a person feels pain, it hurts, but it may not indicate that something is being harmed. Many people with chronic pain develop a fear of movement (kinesiophobia). On the other hand, it is important to maintain pacing and not overdo activities when you feel like doing anything.
Dr. Furlan is a pain specialist in Toronto Canada. She is a physiatrist (specialist in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation). She holds a medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto. She has 30 years of experience helping people with chronic pain to get better quality of life.

Hi Dr Andrea. You are so correct in advising people to pace themselves when doing work or activities. I am learning the hard way to pace myself. It took me two days to cut my lawn as I paced myself. Today I don't feel exhausted or in lots of pain as I usually would if I pushed myself and didn't take breaks. And I didn't cause a flare up. Learning to respect the body is vital at the same time staying active at a level suitable to your body. Thanks 👍 again Andrea for another informative video!! Have a good day 😊

Good to see that you are active in social media. I wish it is the same for in person treatment. Waited almost a year to see you but your office couldn't schedule me in yet. Started going to a Chiropractor instead. Alas! These days doctors also wants to be influencers in social media while majority of us Canadians are waiting in line to see a specialist. Good luck 👍

Wounderful and must to aware this video educate Hurt#harm hurt is not dangerous nor harm to body .yes of course fear of doing movement ( catastrophic fear) kinesiophobia is mainly due sudden anxiety leads to lack of conditioning , avoiding in participation home based activities leads to flareup - disability ...needs pain education and appropriate guidance to come over from hightened fear to resilience ...this avoidance leads to " biographical suspension" so need mind body therapy to promote the activity positive thoughts from negativity ...ofcourse your woodcutter metaphor clearly explains graded pacing wins instead of consistent work ...this we need biopsychosocial model approach ....here if you speak as evidence based therapy rehab no one willing to change .....welldone fantastic its my favourite work ....thank you dr andrea for sharing this .....my mentors are peter o sullivan & greglehman physios from australia and canada ...i have learned this ...and great neuroscientist physio prof.lorimer mosely said " Motion is a lotion" come out from hypervigilliant and be resielience .....
