i wouldn't say that the story is finished. up to the conclusion of the game we learn that things are a lot bigger than the characters thought with the cosmic horror they beautifully injected into the story. the only thing that Mae and co accomplished was cave in one of multiple exits for the cult. Mae and the gang escapes through what the mine used as ventilation, and for that reason there must be more located downwards in the mine. The cult could be anyone out in the streets of possum springs, and they know who Mae and the gang is, plus they potentially pissed off the Black Goat, aka they are in one hell of a lot more trouble than before. with the Lovecraft connections that are present the Black Goat is a force to be reckoned with. They could call the story here, but that would be such a waste of potential, at least now that they built this all up just to never mention it again. i really hope they won't leave it with this cliffhanger seeing how things just got spiced up.

Despite not being a college dropout and not having a dissociative disorder (at least not since the last time i checked, lol) its incredible how relatable Mae is. I've rarely seen a character and thought "Wow, that's almost the exact things I'm going/I went through!". My mom, she's a social worker so she sees mental illness on a daily basis. I asked her about Mei's condition and she said it sounded like some form of schizophrenia. Some of the symptoms are a withdrawal from reality and relationships, paranoia, depression, fatigue, amnesia and just a general disconnect with reality. All things that Mei has shown through out the game. Just in case if anyone's wondering.

NITW manages to be charming, poignant, vulnerable, real, and hilarious at the same time. it combines realistic and multidimensional characters with mental health and silly high school/college antics. and with all of that, it adds that heavy realization that people exist outside your life with them. and then it gives us a horror/supernatural kick with the cult in the coal mines (not to mention the commentary about classism if you watch the dads of the town interact with the homeless man). the art style is cute and adds a soft atmosphere that is excellently contrasted when the game takes dark turns. i LOVE this game!

I know it's unlikely at best now, but I would absolutely love it if they did a "Night in the Woods Extended Edition" update that makes it so you can view all the story content in a single playthrough. It would have extra days so you could do all hangouts with both Gregg and Bea (and Angus in the investigation scenario). And naturally, those extra days would have more dialogue and more crimes for Mae to get into. Also full voice acting. Gosh, I'd love that so much.

I love that it's an interesting out-of-business town. I lived in Thomasville, North Carolina for four years. Back in the day, Thomasville and High Point were the big furniture names in the world, but now they just chill on the Randolph/Davidson County borders with their creepy old broken factories. It's a beautiful place with some awesome history, and I think Night in the Woods sticks to me because it's how home was for me. Just a group of pals, chillin' in a small downtown watching all the trains. I used to spend all my time hiking out in the woods. We moved to a more suburban middle-class neighborhood with no woods, and it's broken my little forest nymph heart.

As I crew older my favorite character choices changed from "Oh they're so cool!" to "They're kinda like me so that's neat and I kinda understand some of their ups and downs.". So that's why Mae is my favorite. Her lines and especially her humor are pure gold for me. One of the greatest classics in the indie genre, in recent memory. On first notice it is cute and cushy with simple art design and mechanics, but deep within it harnesses dark and serious themes about religion and politics, not to mention the major underlying topics about depression, lost of innocence, and uncertainty towards change. Accompanied by the "intensely beautiful" soundtrack and impeccable, easily-quotable writing, this game touches me in levels I couldn't even describe. It will take me a lot of time to digest and get over the feeling of finishing this game even though there's a lot of side quests yet for me to explore (germ, lorrie, demon tower, dad, mom hike, buskers etc). I will 4ever relate to mae and live precariously through her, exploring and relishing the beautiful town she grew up in and all her perfect friends and family that accompanied in her darkest hours. It's so weird that nobody mentions that Benson did merch art for the cabaret punk band The World/Inferno Friendship Society. They have a song called "A Night in the Woods", about a group of young people in a small town who astral project to commit vandalism. It's part of an entire album about a small NJ town (just north of Benson's hometown) and the towns many strange goings on amidst it's simple appearance, and dealing with loss, identity, and your astal projected demons. One of the best bands ever, and worth checking out if you want to learn about Jack Terricloth, the real life Greg, but in a slick suit on stage and leather jacket off.
