I compare a full-on analog beast of a recording channel (Neve 1073, UA 1176 and PAL Plus MkIII optical tube compressor with a clean, direct mic pre on the Audient iD44, and again with the iD44 and hardware emulating Plug-ins! There is an Easter egg for Psychotic Waltz fans. Join The Tribe here! wmg.mykajabi.c...

Devon, my friend! What a pleasant surprise to discover your channel today! His technical knowledge is enriching and trains our ears and perceptions. Your voice in this song simply moves anyone who listens, beautiful timbres and vocal control. Much success! A hug from a percussionist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 🪘

Finally someone does an Audient vs Neve pre! :) Please do another video without the EQ or compression (or just the same to both) using drums and other instruments.

Good idea. This one was more about HW vs Plug-ins. I also have some api channels I could put in there as well. Let's see what I can do.

I'll work on that for ya. The thing is, Neve are great on vocals, api on distorted guitars and snare... different advantages. The Audient is quieter than the Neve which I didn't mention.

The 1073 and the compressors going in sounds really balanced and pleasant when compared to the raw ID44 mic pre. On the acoustic guitar it's not a deal breaker but I do hear a very slightly warmer/ rounder tone with the 1073. The transients seem smoother on the 1073. Love from India!!

100%, and I disagree with the second sentence, unless the buyer would need ID44 for other reasons. Google tells me ~500€ = $535 usd, but it's genuinely painful to listen to. Willing to bet you could use $150 interface & pick up 3 randomly picked compressor-emulation plugins from Waves $30 each, and still come up with more enjoyable tone.

@@devon-graves-studio-D Great! I have a question. I'm planning to buy a Neve 1073N, but it lacks an insert loop. Do you use inserts on your DPX, and if you do, how crucial is having inserts pre/post EQ? I'm particularly concerned because I intend to use my 1073N with a hardware compressor in the future.

Interesting comparion, thank you. Takeaway to me is: unless you have everything else really figured out (room, instruments, mics, performance) and can easily shell out the thousands of dollars for high end hardware, there's no point. The difference is virtually neglectable or at least highly disproportionate to the difference in price. If you're not coming from a 1073 which you are trying to emulate but instead use a clean signal (like from the ID44) and make it sound as best as you can with stock plugins, you'll lose a lot less sleep and also get a solid result. Nobody will ever tell you anyway that your recordings suck because no 1073 or whatever. Also interesting in this context is the "compressor scam" series by AP Mastering in which the guy demonstrates with a self-written plugin that compressors basically don't differ that much - it's more in the settings. He also has some quite revealing info about EQ.

I love what you did here. I'm RIGHT in the middle of downsizing my studio. I sold off piles of outboard and only kept: WA273 and a pair of WA2A comps. And I use an Audient 2-channel interface. THE POINT IS that I was wondering if I could just get away with buying an ID44 and adding a pair of WA76 comps...this way I have 4 channels - 2 going to a pair of WA2A's and 2 going to a pair of 1176's. I think it would be killer to have both legendary flavors of comp handy. OR if I should add a second WA273 to have 4 full channels of 73 bypassing the Audient pres all together. I think this test helped me decide to get another WA273 and a pair of WA76's...almost exclusively for how much better it handles the highs on everything. Can you get CLOSE with plugins? Kind of...but I certainly don't want to sit there tweaking several plugs to get to where I could have been in the first place straight from the channel strip!

Your analogue chain on the vocal sounded better, but I think you could have massaged the software emulation a little more to get even closer. Throw another eq with a high shelf on the end of your plugin chain or something. I actually preferred the ID44 on the guitar. Great video. Thanks for uploading.

This is a brilliant premise but I have an Audient and came to figure out if I need a neve (as title suggests) and this doesn’t help unfortunately- so wish you showed that at same time without rest of chain. Nice singing.

Hi! I didn't means to suggest anything in particular. I did do the acoustic guitar without any eq or compression. The reason I processed on the way I. is that is how I actually record, and is the best reason to have the eq and compressors for tracking. But in the end, the Audient is awesome, less noisy and with the plug-ins gets you pretty darn close. I find that comparing mic pre to mic pre is too subtle and barely worth considering. Its about the whole chain to me.
@funkuncle999
@funkuncle999 4 ай бұрын
@@devon-graves-studio-D Yes thanks. I guess your comment that it is so 'subtle' is an answer to my Neve preamp question in of itself. I see now your video title was really about that whole chain i just presumed it was testing those elements separately against each other. With my context going in being curious about the Neve, what your vid actually taught me is , that if I bought one outboard piece of gear I should probably buy a compressor. I'd (stupidly) never really thought about how it effectively 'gain stages' your recording before it hits your DAW. Lately Ive been going in and doing that manually (after watching some YT videos about it). I usually do the fast compressor/slow compressor (1176/LA-2) in-series-trick with vocals. So I guess it would make sense to buy a hardware version of a faster (1176 style) and have it knock off the really loud stuff before it goes into the DAw where I might further compress more subtley with in the box stuff? Or what type would you do if you only had one hardware compressor?

Yes, 1073 sounds slightly more cleae and open in highs. But my conclusion of the video is that anyone with a decent interface can make a record sound good if he knows what he is doing. You made a “cheap” interface sound close to a neve and that’s amazing.
@devon-graves-studio-D
@devon-graves-studio-D 4 ай бұрын
Also, one thing I failed to mention is that the Audient was quieter. The Neve across all channels would definitely have some noise build-up.

The 1073 is clearer and more opened. The ID44 is polished and pleasant but lacks the clarity of the 1073. All in all, the difference is not very huge.

Be careful getting audient interfaces. QC is a big issue. I got an id44 mkii and i just recently got a rme ucx ii as i could take the preamp hiss any longer. Not everyone will deal with this on their audients but its a crap shoot. You got a 50/50 shot of getting a good unit or bad one like i did and audient customer service all but doesnt exist. I waited 3 months to get a response from them without an answer. He has his input 2 set around 6, if i go above 3.5-4 on gain knobs even with pads engaged this hiss is unbearable. It got increasingly worse over time. No more issues with that crap on rme. I warned you in case this happens Good luck.
