Rob, that's a beautiful and reasonable cheap planetary gear set. Anyone/everyone else, with wind power generation, sufficient RPM to generate sufficent voltage can be a problem with many generators. by fixing the blades to the ring gear with the planetary gears fix and the generator connected to the sun gear would gear up the RPMs at the generator.

I do not know if you have ever tore into a older style washing machine transmission. The first one that i did impressed me with all the bits and parts that were in it. If you never did have a look inside one you should give it a go. It was very fun for me and i did make a few things from all the cool bits. Thanks for the Planetary Gears it has given me some ideas as a lot of your watching dose. It is amazing what you come up with.

Awesome you can also get the cam pulley from an engine scrapped engine like your mini engine and use those for this perhaps for other types of reduction gear or maybe even in a planetary system I made a CNC machine using extra long cam belts and cam wheels from a VW many years ago

Polyurethane glue may have an advantage in this application. Sticks to virtually everything, catalyzed with water for a reasonably quick bond.The resulting bond is somewhat elastomeric/resilient in nature. Fantastic videos Rob.

Very cool, this type of gearing might solve the issue I have with a motor from a front loading washing machine. It is full of neo magnets and a wheel of coils, very high torque and I want to find a way to get it working on a wind turbine.

Would you do a video on what is the best type of lubricate to use on plastic and/or nylon(gears belts etc.)? I've heard some can break down the material. I've heard of people using old soap bars to prevent fan belts from being noisy...but idk if that' the same.

Someone mentioned first giving the belts a coat of Armour-all car vinyl protection. It makes rubber so slippery. Then silicone grease which does not degrade the rubber like mineral grease does.

The first time that I became aware of planetary gears, was when I was operating heavy equipment. The mechanic was called to work on my TS 14-B Terrex earth mover, Scraper. He took off the wheel and low and behold there were huge planetary gears.

This should be able to used as a clutch! Using simple disc breaks instead if normal clutches. Engine to center gear, put a break on the big wheel or combined planet package and let the other one go to the gearbox. Same principal can be used to make cheap dynamic 4wheels drive. Freely spinning and all power go to front wheels. When engaged by "breaking" then power go to all wheels. If both front and back have this box then got can choose if u want power in only front or backwheels. Or 4-wheel.

For those looking for a cheap way to approach the inner spur or ring gear with metal, you can buy "gear rack" in a large variety of sizes and bend it to suit your needs.

Forget the belt planetary gears you should be using magnetic bearings and build some magnetic gears in plantary arrangement so that it is friction less and you can create your own gear ratios

It seems to me that you may have the right idea about using these things for using big wide veined windmills to generate electricity. Since they turn slowly, but have a great amount of torque. Translating the massive torque from the outer gear to the inner sun gear would spin it fast enough to generate electricity.

Would imagine it would be hard to get the planetary gears of the correct dimensions to fit, perhaps the timing belt around a wooden disk would make it easier to get the correct diameters
@docink6175

You could always cut your own circles out of MDF or plastic and wrap those with the belts so you get the size gearing that you want.. what if you put gears on the outside of the bicycle rim where the tube normally goes and drove another gear or set of gears off of it?
@MartinPHellwig

I mean going from, making gears is a lot of faff to, hey this is a planetary gear set I made, demonstrates with abundance the making power those timing belts give.

Goddess, I love this channel. In terms of the potential bonding issue you talked about around 8:13 I feel like a JB weld would work great. A bit expensive tho. I know you have some great information out there in your books about bio glues and stuff like that. If you're up for it I'd love to see some experimentation with JB weld for these gears VS whatever you can come up with for glues. You know how to make things accessible for tinkerers like me and a good JB weld substitute would be absolutely amazing! I haven't a clue as to how to give enough wear on those gears to make the test not take forever but I had the idea and thought it worth dropping a line here. I only briefly went through your book on bioplastics and need to dive in more. Sending love from AZ

In low wind conditions you would have low torque. So wouldn't it be better to attach the turbine to the outside gear and drive the sun gear with higher torque for the generator?
@CGrenfeldt
@CGrenfeldt 2 жыл бұрын
This is very interesting. What if your put three weak engines on each planetary wheels. They should all be sumorized. Would three weak wind or water turbines be added into one force that's more efficient than harvest three separate?
@CGrenfeldt
@CGrenfeldt 2 жыл бұрын
And then u stack three of these units as input to another planetary gear. When I was thinking about building my own electric scooter i was thinking about using planetary gears to make a compact engine of three 'weaker' and cheaper engines. And then use the outer ring to drive the wheel. Or another set of gears to get one to one-isch ratio again. Three engines gives you the option to only run one or two to cruse

it is very clever mate and I like it - but it cannot be frictionless - if it were frictionless there would be no power transfer - the spheres would just slip over the disks - the high pressure at the sphere disk interface compresses the transmission fluid to increase friction at that point so it acts like a tooth of a cog - I have no idea why folks are so hung ups on frictionless - once again there can be no power transfer without friction
@ProlificInvention
@ProlificInvention 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThinkingandTinkering Near frictionless was the term I used to get yours and others attention. It's simple,I be tested it on motorized bicycles and the amazing durability is only one characteristic that sets it apart from clutch/transmission combinations. I have tested it and know for a fact that it's the scalable technology of the future. Just my opinion obviously.
