He was the one that wanted to take pictures of the steam and dust, so I gave him my phone and gopro. Actually didn't expect ramblings from him.

Good job dad. Some beautiful long shots that you just can't shoot solo. It was also really nice to hear his narration.

I never got a chance to see what it actually looked like in person. He actually was the one that wanted some footage of this, so I gave him my phone and gopro.

Well we know where you get your great camera work from. And if your dad would could he tell his experience from the snow storms in 1966. I heard they had drifts as high as telephone poles in North Dakota that year.
@farmingnodak7 жыл бұрын
Both my parents have stories, not just from '66, but a few others since they started farming full-time. They've had some rough winters in their past.

An unexpected on at that too. He wanted to take pictures of the steam and dust coming off of the tractor in the sunlight... so I gave him my phone and gopro, and did not expect a voice-over lol. He did a lot better than me!

Its been plenty cold! My uncle and cousin fish on Lake Sakakawea and with this cold they should have plenty of ice!

Don't think there's much snow there either. Everything is froze solid after this past week.

Excellent narration from your Dad, I like the analogy of the effort to eating long sticks of celery compared to short sticks. Quick question, What would you do to feed hay if you could not get the tractor and bale processor to start / work one day?
@farmingnodak7 жыл бұрын
We'd have to try the other tractor (whether be the Allis or the Massey, pending on which doesn't have a problem :/ ). Since my brother left his Bobcat here for now, we could use the skidsteer too. If all else fails, we could get the payloader out, but hate to do it when it's so cold. If all else fails, would have to call a neighbor if is possible but I'd rather not think about that.... that would be a very bad week. I haven't showed it yet, but we have plugged in the other tractor a couple times just in case if something happened.

-22 degrees with wind chill or without
@farmingnodak7 жыл бұрын
Without. Since the wind was light, the chill wasn't as bad, but I think it still registered at -38F windchill.

Do you feed corn during the cold weather? I was also wondering if the cows get frost bite?
@farmingnodak7 жыл бұрын
Every now and then cows will get corn... haven't had to this year with the Sweet Yellow Clover we have for them that makes for a nice tasty treat for a few days. They could get frost bite I suppose, but never had it happen. They are resilient critters. The main thing is shelter from the wind, enough food and water. Having some bedding and sunlight is a plus. We've been checking them every day to make sure no one is looking ill or thin. We did bring one cow home a couple days ago, as was looking thin. She can get some rations of corn and able to monitor her better.

We had -34 here in 92 I think it was and I had a terrible time with frost bite. Your dad did a great job filming and I enjoyed his commentary.

Wow, I thought the 4 below zero windchill we had in Tennessee was bad.
