Thanks for responding, hopefully those silicon dice come in Bi colors lol. I just want to say that I started a Vampire: The Requiem campaign and your CofD was very helpful in teaching my group the system, most of whom *are* newbies. I'm not sure if I would've been fully able to explain the game without it actually, even with the pdf and print copy at hand. So I wanted to say thanks my guy, keep up the good work.

I haven't looked at Victoriana in a long time, and it makes sense that you would call it alternate history, but I never would have considered that the premise. The sales pitch presented to me was Shadowrun x steampunk. Being Victorian was sort of the justification. The adventure comes less from anti-zaibatsu resistance or regular old corporate espionage and more the period's tendencies toward Jules Verne type stories. It's like if Marie Brennan's Lady Trent books (awesome series) also had steampunk cybernetics and more fantasy humanoids.

I'd love to see a game that's tactical and combat heavy that does interesting stuff when you miss other than just removing the roll to hit all together. Not having a way to avoid damage makes glass cannon melee builds like an assassin or a monk unplayable IMHO.

Absolutely love fun failure mechanics!! It is a big drive for at least one of the games I've irregularly worked on these past years (my design backlog forever swells :'D) and certainly a touch underrated regarding more popular playstyles. Roll For Shoes is an amazing game related to this I think, I've taught it to so many people even as their first game. Every time they click in immediately with messing things up being interesting, often throwing themselves at problems with ridiculously solutions or wanting to roll for mundane tasks for the opportunity to get XP and ramp up the fun. Also cards are better than dice and you should say it!!

Thanks so much! I've been thinking on this a bit, and I'm not totally sure. Like...a liiittle bit in the way armor works, but I dunno. I don't see any close similarities, but I get so deep in the weeds with game mechanics that I can easily miss the trees for the forest.

Thanks so much! There are a lot of ways to get into these games, thankfully! If you don't know anyone personally, you can find discord groups (Titterpig Academy is a wonderful one that also helps folks learn how to play), or also check out Start Playing, a website that allows GMs to post games that anyone can join. Now, most of the Start Playing games cost money, but there are a lot that are free (or very reasonably priced), and they'll say whether they are beginner-friendly or not! I hope that helps

Are there any TTRPG solo player systems?
@TheDungeonNewbsGuide4 ай бұрын
If, by solo player, you mean one GM and one player, then Godkiller by Connie Chang is a must. I would also recommend Ironsworn and Starforged (same system, but different settings). Those two can be played with a GM and any number of players, no GM and a bunch of players, or just one person playing solo.

*sqeals* HE READ MY THING!
@PoisonxTea6 ай бұрын
HE READ YOUR THING! TBH I would like to recommend a couple of Rowan, Rook and Decard's games to both you and him. Their two games Spire: The City Must Fall and Heart: The City Beneath take place in the same universe, and sort of in the same city. They're both dice pool d10 games (you almost always roll between 1-4 of 'em depending on if you have the relevant skills or any mastery), though there are some rare special high advances that let you roll more for a scene. Spire is more political fantasy (you are drow members of a resistance cell involved in a rebellion against the cruel iron-fisted high elf overclass) while Heart is more of a horror-focused fantasy dungeon delve (where you are traveling into the horrifying eldritch heart underneath the city of Spire); both are likely to end tragically eventually, with Heart's highest/most late game character moves involving your character dying in order to use the move. Interestingly, it's kind of the opposite of the "make failure still feel positive for players"; Spire especially has even some success rolls result in negative outcomes and stress (which is basically hits to your HP). But it's really, really story-oriented stuff and feels very cool to actually play out even when things go wrong. Plus Spire at least is way funnier than I'm making it sound. Definitely worth checking out!

I have always wanted to play a high magic game where everyone uses magic is some way (like an all-wizards game). But the only magic system I know is D&D/5e. And that system sucks harder than a Hoovervac 5000 deluxe at Mardi Gras. Any suggestions?
@TheDungeonNewbsGuide7 ай бұрын
Mage: The Awakening can be a really solid Chronicles of Darkness game for some modern high-magic fun. The book can be a little intimidating, and it if you wanted something in a mode traditional fantasy setting, I don't think it would make the transition all that well (but I may be wrong). I really do love all the magic options in Cortex Prime, but that would certainly be an investment to choose exactly which mods you want. But I love how you can connect magic in it to premade Powers that gain abilities as they level, or you can make them more fluid and undefined, or you could link them to Resources....it would be hard to touch on all the possibilities, which is what makes Cortex such an exciting, but also intimidating, option. Still, it would allow you to better tailor the experience to your game. I've heard good things about Ars Magica, though I hear it can also be a little crunch and overwhelming to learn at first. Sadly, no experience with it, so I can't say more than that it is probably worth looking into. Fabula Ultima might be worth a look. There are a lot of spell-casting classes, and since every character has to play a mix of classes, it would allow players to all make sure to at least choose on caster, and then make it feel more unique and specialized with the other classes they attach to it. The advancement and learning of new spells can be a little...video gamey though, and doesn't have a lot of detail to explore when it comes to the magic. I also feel like the system in City of Mist would allow for some cool magic, but it would require some hacking. I know the fantasy hack of it, Legends in the Mist, is coming out in a year or two, but if you were impatient, it would allow for a more narrative forward, flexible magic system. Those are at least the ones that came to mind to me first, but I am sure there are more out there.

@@TheDungeonNewbsGuide Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to get my group away from 5e lately. Ive tried Risus and EZD6. I'm gonna look into Fabula Ultima and City of Mist for sure, thanks!
@taejaskudva25437 ай бұрын
You could do Ars Magica with Cortex Prime. AM would just be premise and model, CP would carry all the mechanical lifting. Alternately from Mage by White Wolf (or whatever it's called now), Exalted is a setting where the demigods you play are basically like a party of wizards. I've always liked Mage but found the system loose and argument causing. Exalted's system is crunchy to the point of making me tired - but I LLOOOOOVVEE the game and its setting. Both Mage and Exalted would play well with Cortex Prime as a mechanical engine. If you Google Exalted: Blood and Fire, someone's already done a CP system adaptation, but one of their explicit goals is not undercut purchasing the Exalted books, so you'd still want access to them for world info. Oh, the game prior to Cortex Prime, Marvel Heroic Roleplay, could be used to do lots of people with magic. It's a little rough because they had a weird scene-type economy thing to try to reflect comic pacing, and the char gen rules were released as an optional system because the game writers assumed you'd want to be playing a prepublished comics character, but system-wise it could totally do what you need for bunches of magic party composition. Basically, if you don't mind how game mechanic forward CP's dice pool game play is, I think it's great!
@taejaskudva25437 ай бұрын
Oh, if you like PbtA, you could reflavor Masks to be wizards instead of supers pretty easily. The mutable nature of the stats and how they are changed could be justified by turning them into metaphysical magic aspects. The mechanics of character advancement in City of Mist is so tied to balancing the tug of war between two natures that you could easily make a party of mages, but I feel like you'd butt heads against xp changing your characters instead of growing them. (The conflict and change is the character growth in the CoM because it's about the duality of being normal vs being mythic.)
