In classic Weatherby form, the 6.5 RPM is built for speed! That’s the only classic Weatherby thing about this cartridge. RPM stands for rebated precision magnum - a dramatic departure from their traditional offerings. Maximizing the efficiency of 6.5mm bullets, as well as the entire Mark V 6-lug action, should it be more popular? We think so! Tune in to hear all about this modern-cartridge marvel.

This new stuff is all about selling new rifles to the youngsters who have little experience with anything not on the internet. It is like the world never existed until they reached adulthood. We end up with 20 new calibers and no support of any that are pre internet. Crazy foolishness, as the "book" was written before their time. Men have been melting chamber throats with ultra-high velocity for decades. These people will never shoot enough to notice. These young men should invest in a set of Gun Digests for the last 40 years. They might learn something.

I was kinda thinking the same thing as this 6.5 RPM seems more like a duplication than a significant improvement over the 264 Win Mag. Upon dressing the doe out I noticed the lungs were mush. I myself haven’t killed a deer with a rifle as of yet, I mainly archery hunt so I haven’t seen the destruction with rifles. Out of curiosity, why do you prefer this to the PRC? Consumers generally seem to benefit from a smaller number of cartridges becoming more popular, as economies of scale and competition bring prices down. Conversely, I'm of the belief that market segmentation and the resulting higher profit margins are a major factor driving the introduction of new cartridges. As result, since the WBY RPM and PRC are quite ballistically similar, my preference would be to see only one succeed long term. A priori I don't have much preference which wins out, but given the PRCs substantial lead at this point I'm inclined to hope other manufacturers just stick with it and ignore the WBY RPM. Open to changing my mind though.

One thing that Ryan may have alluded to in passing, but I think needs to be emphasized.... This cartridge really is mostly for folks who shoot factory rifles and factory ammo. It is severely handicapped by the short action mag length. You have to stuff it with over 100 thousandths of jump to the lands. If you like to tinker and maximize accuracy and such, this cartridge is not for you unless you went completely custom on everything and then you're going to have to compare it to other wildcats and open a whole new box of comparisons.

If it was consistently over 150 fps faster I might give it more credit, but for only 100 fps you've gotta be a pretty hardcore Weatherby fan to not just get a 6.5 PRC.

I think bullet diameter DOES mean something, but it's pointless with a good bullet design being paired with it. If we take a 6.5mm bullet and a 7mm bullet that both expand to exactly double diameter (just as a 1:1 example) the 6.5 mm bullet will expand to 13mm or roughly .53caliber, but the 7mm will expand to 14mm or roughly .57 caliber. A 30 cal will expand to .60 caliber. The key is using a good bullet that will reliably expand at the velocities you're going to be impacting the animal at. Bullet construction decides your velocity threshold for performance, a Barnes LRX/TTSX or Hornady CX/GMX need a bare minimum of 2000fps at a given distance for me to use it at that distance, and I tend to draw my line more at 2200 just for ethical reasons, whereas a tipped hunting bullets like a Sierra Game changer or Hornady ELD-X or a Federal Terminal Ascent give me both a lower velocity threshold, and a better BC to extend that velocity threshold much farther away (not that I go looking for long shots, but it's nice to have that ability in your repertoire should a great animal step out of the brush further away) I don't think 6.5 is inadequate for elk or even moose, it wouldn't be my first choice, but as long as I had a good bullet and knew I was within range for ideal performance then I'd take the shot if it presented itself. I do like just a touch more frontal diameter (mainly because I'm inexplicably enamored with the .284 bullet diameter) but a 6.5 is an excellent choice.

Bullet construction is king, but the smaller the diameter of the bullet, the more crucial it is. For example with a .45-70 you can just throw a lead bullet in there and it will perform just fine on even large game at appropriate distances. Whereas with a .308 cal you need you need some sort of cup and core but as long as it’s soft pointed it will be fine. I would argue that 6.5 is the line where you don’t just need A good bullet for the job but you THE good bullet for the job. Bullet selection becomes absolutely essential with bullets that small and that’s why a lot of people would prefer something a little bigger.

Maybe if Hornady would have named the 6.5 prc, the 6.5 Hornady magnum people would say, oh yeah it's a magnum it is powerful. But the prc doesn't roll off the tongue like "magnum". Factory 130 grain Federal terminal ascent out of my 24 inch Bergara, low 3060 high 3114. If i wanted to handload it, it would be beyond the 6.5 RPM, but I don't want to. The point is it is a magnum already and it is a short action.

This cartridge and rifle was first built by TSE in Brisbane as a one of custom for a customer and Weatherby fan, when it came to getting a chamber reamer in the US the project was leaked to Weatherby and they quickly came up with their own version

Well i own this cartridge in mark V, and i can personally tell you the best speeds ive seen is 3079 averaging, ballistically it doesnt achieve anything over my 270 winchester with 58 grains of reloder 22 with 130 nosler ballistic tips and that shoots at 3054 and take less powder, most hand loads ive worked up take at least 65 to 70 grains and weatherby messed up by offering there rifles with this cartridge only in a number 1 or 2 contour barrel when it came out

6.5×300 Weatherby fastest 6.5 caliber. Also arguably the most flat shooting caliber in the world. Why did they make the other ones? I guess I will stay tuned, wonder if they will mention these other 6.5 comparisons.

I'll take the PRC, short action, better case design, just as speedy bullet for bullet. Factory 143's are going 2950 in my 24 in proof barrel. 156's are about 2900 as well. My 6.5 CM is over 2800 with 147's

Ryan how would you compare it to a .264 Win Mag? I’m pushing the 127 LRX’s out of my .264 at close to the same velocity but with about 85% case capacity. I’m assuming the RPM is more efficient????

i jumped on the 6.5 band wagon some years back,,,,, the creedmoor taught me that it lacks a lot on game,, i have nine 6.5s i love the caliber,, but i have experienced poor performance on larger big game,, with the 264 and the 6.5x284,, ,,the extra velocity over the creedmoor just does not seem to help all that much,, and at times penetration has been lacking,, using good bullets,,,,the 7mm caliber is more reliable on game,,

Seems pretty close to the 6.5 PRC. I loaded some 6.5prc up (127gr Barnes LRX. (Hornady new brass, WLRM primers, 58gr. H1000, loaded at 2.910” OAL) ) and am pushing 3119 with an ES of 4fps. Is the brass more expensive than 6.5prc? How many grains of powder is in a typical load?
