Thank you for another interesting and informative test review. This UA 10mm Auto 180 Gr XTP JHP is already my winter carry round for personal defense. My platform has a 4.6" barrel. If memory serves, you have a previous video where you tested this load through a 5" barrel and it easily outperformed the 1300 fps advertised mussle velocity - you got 16" of penetration, great expansion with a huge wound channel, and 1344 FPS impact velocity. This is a excellent round. I've long been thinking about UA's 155 Gr XTP JHP for my warm weather carry personal defense round... you've just sealed the deal on it for me - it'll be the one. Thank you, and good things! 👍

Thank you buddy!! Yessir, out of the full size it did great. I put it up against some BB ammo and they both did awesome and both got over advertised velocity. Great choice on carry, definitely can't go wrong with either. @TheTAEclub Isn't it obvious? I thought this video made it pretty clear as to why. The light-for-caliber faster higher energy 155 Gr XTP JHP round penetrates a lot less than the 180 Gr XTP JHP round of the same type in ballistics gel (12" vs 16"), so it is far less likely to over-penetrate a human-sized threat. I live in a fairly densely populated suburban area (250,000 people live in my town alone), so over-penetration is a concern. In the warmer months, most people tend to wear less / fewer layers of clothing, so less penetration is needed. The 155 Gr XTP JHP round produces a relatively shallow (12") yet very wide nasty wound channel in ballistics gel. It has a lot of energy - 774 FtLbs ME from a 5" barrel. I believe it makes for a really good one-shot-stop personal self-defense round for human-sized threats without thick hides, for use primarily in urban / suburban / rural settings. The fewer rounds I need to fire to stop a threat the better off (safer) all will be. I consider over-penetration either inside one's home, or outside where lots of people are around, to be a really bad thing. The heavier slower lower energy 180 Gr XTP JHP round penetrates more in ballistics gel (16"), its better for dealing with human-sized threats wearing multiple layers of clothing (thicker hides), making it better for cool / cold weather personal self-defense. If I'm wilderness trail biking / hiking / camping, I load up 200 Gr FN Hardcast Lead rounds for maximum penetration / personal self-defense against large critters that might want to eat me, and/or my wife, and/or my kids. It would be really stupidly irresponsible of me to use 200 Gr (or heavier) FN HCL as my primary round for personal self-defense EDC against human-sized threats in high human-populated areas and/or inside my home, as these rounds penetrate over 60" in ballistics gel. For 10mm Auto, my load out is simple. ■ In the Woods: - 200 Gr FN HCL x 20 [primary]; - 140 Gr Xtreme Penetrators x 16 [secondary]; - 200 Gr XTP JHP x 16 [tertiary]. ■ In Town / At Home: - 155 Gr XTP JHP x 20 (Warm months) or else 180 Gr XTP JHP x 20 (Cool months)[primary]; - 180 Gr XTP JHP x 16 [secondary]; - 140 Gr Xtreme Penetrator x 10, plus 200 Gr FN HCL x 6 [tertiary]. You're not saying that you only consider one load for all settings and circumstances, are you?

Wish I could get that 155 in hawaii. That was a devastating wound channel. 180 grain buffalo bore is no slouch at 1350 out of a G20 (+p 115 grain 9mm numbers with a bit more diameter and alot more mass) I'm a firm believer that mass x velocity is "the way"... that 155 speaks to me. Underwood, after watching many tests on YT is the most potent factory "full house" 10mm on the market IMHO. BB is second, based on my own testing. The only way to do better than UW or BB? A mere 2 inches of additional penetration for the 180gr and you think that warrants it's use over the 155gr for 4-legged animals? Did you miss the profound difference in cavitational damage and the utter devastation that the 155gr imparted?
@guardianminifarm8005 Жыл бұрын
@@TERMINAL-BALLISTICS The 155 definitely produced a bit more dynamic initial impact damage. And it held it well, very well for much of it's travel. The stills AZ provides do a great job capturing that. The 155 wouldn't necessarily fail to perform if used on a larger dangerous animal. The extra weight of the 180 would give it more momentum and mass if/when met bone to help ensure better penetration. In perspective a 180lb. man is a heavier weight category/class than a 155lb. man in fighting match. The class itself doesn't mean the lighter class fighter is lesser it is simply a physical or physics fact. Appreciate the thought.

@@bobjones-bt9bh I appreciate the opinion. But I would disagree. I do woodlands management in the Great Lakes region of Upper Peninsula MI and Northern WI. Our black bear are not too very large as a rule. When I have trained new folk I remind them that the black bear will naturally avoid man except in the spring. I teach folk that a curious cub can get you hurt or killed. A mamma bear will challenge & attack if we are in vicinity of her cub(s). I switched from a 3" 44 magnum to a G29 for some time. I opted to carry Fenix 180 gr. Gold Dots. The G29 is much more conducive for carry with gear & equipment than the large frame revolver. I am personally confident that this option here in 180 or the 180 Gold Dot would be adequate if the situation required it. The biggest point of failure would be me possibly not putting shots on target. Take care out there with whatever you choose.

I still own 8 boxes of underwood 180gr gold dots 1300fps ( g29 has it at 60fps slower then ad box). Have boxes of underwood 165gr gd, and 140gr xtrm pen (the g29 normally has 60 - 90fps then ad box/g20 4.6" barrel. I don't know what's up with the speeds on your test ammo, but I like to see defensive 10mm auto ammo with kinetic energy between 575-625 muzzle energy in what ever weight bullet to meet the fbi energy standard (550ft lbs muzzle energy using jhp bullet and the 12-18" gel penetration).
@Hobowolverine17 Жыл бұрын
The 1980'S fbi ballistic study concluded that a jhp bullet with 550ft lbs muzzle energy and 12-18" gel penetration is need to have the best 1 shot stop performance ratio (if an attacker was shot in the torso vital organs). That's why the fbi choose the 10mm auto. The fbi made the switch to 40cal and 9mm due to agents can't handle the 10mm and or couldn't qualify, pricey ammo, 10mm pistols at that time where falling apart from the power of the 10mm, couldn't got parts needed for repair. The fbi, police, game wardens, and military that still use the 10mm auto for duty.

You're only losing 40 to 60 fps with the G29, compared to the G20. That still isn't "real" 10mm by some standards. Underwood is hit or miss on their velocities. It is good quality ammo, but I wish they were more consistent with them reaching publicized velocities. Personally, of these two loads, I'd go with the 180 gr without hesitation. I normally favor SD and momentum over energy, esp in handguns, and I definitely prefer the nearly ideal penetration of the 180 gr over the marginal penetration of the 155 gr. More important than the total penetration to me is the significantly deeper depth at which the 180 gr settles down. Bringing the active body of the permanent crush cavity deeper into the gel block means the 180 gr is still deforming and chewing up tissue where vital organs are and energy actually does the most good. This is a byproduct of SD and momentum allowing the bullet to retain enough velocity to deform the projectile deeper into the block. The 155 gr is impressive, but does most of its work in the first 6 inches, which is a superficial wound unlikely to quickly incapacitate a determined attacker. Remember, penetration in gel doesn't represent penetration in tissue. Gel is calibrated with a .177 caliber steel BB that will penetrate 3.5 inches or more of gel while barely breaking human skin. Dumping all most of your energy into 6 inches of gel is barely making it through skin and subcutaneous fat and muscle tissue on many Americans.

Keep in mind this is coming from a huge fan of 10mm. These small guns in 10mm to me are counterproductive. The only way to get them to a power level that gives you any real performance edge is to load them with the hottest available ammunition. They lose far too much velocity in anything shorter than 4.25-4.5" barrels and the guns are so light that recoil becomes such a factor the gains are mitigated by your split times. I've done a considerable amount of testing in this subject and found the 10mm best suited to full size guns and in some cases steel frames.
