It’s for safety. Sometimes there’s a large buildup of cuteness that approaches dangerous levels and the cute safety valve vents it all at once to relieve pressure. It’s science.

All animals do this even humans. We’ve just convinced ourselves to control it as adults or use the energy for something “more productive” than play. My tortoise gets the zoomies. She does laps around the house and has turned a cardboard box into a ramp that she uses as a treadmill. Tortoise zoomies don’t last a few minutes either. She’ll keep it up for hours in 15 minute intervals to one minute rests. Hey whatever works.

@@Silkytoaster I didn’t say their zoomies are particularly fast. But like Russian tortoises are originally from The Steppes in places like Kazakstan. Arid, but temperate and rocky. In the wild they can go up to 4 miles a day just to find food, so when they want to move they’re just going to keep going. They can climb, they can bulldoze through stuff, dig tunnels that can rival a sulcata… she’ll spend a good hour trying to climb up the wall. It sounds like Stomp is in my house. Russian tortoises need a lot more room than people think or they start going crazy. And then immediately climb under or on top of whatever mess they’ve made and fall asleep for 15 hours.

I actually have always loved doing this too and I hate that I currently can't. You need a nature area or a large grass expanse. Now I need to wait and see if this scientific explanation works for me too because I am not done watching yet. Nope. It's just exercising. Dogs aren't supposed to be living with us is why, just like we aren't supposed to be sitting on a chair and then couch all day. You can do this kind of thing in place, if you're a human, and it's invigorating. But it's hard(er) if you're in bad shape.

A bonus feature. One of my dogs, the chihuahua gets them on occasion, after a dump, and in a couple turns he actually runs on the wall to make it. Years ago we had a cat (Tigger) that had a bad case of them several times a day. He was just a blur, running across people's laps, under furniture, around the walls, everywhere and then when you lost sight of him he would be sitting on top of the curtain rod near the ceiling cleaning his paws.
