Helene has officially strengthened into a hurricane as it continues to track toward the Florida coast.
The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane and storm surge warnings for parts of Florida's Gulf Coast, including the Tampa Bay area, ahead of potential impacts from the storm. It's expected further strengthen into a major hurricane, category 3 or higher, sometime Thursday ahead of landfall.
As of the latest advisory, Tropical Storm Helene is 60 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico. It's moving at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.
"Helene's large size will likely cause an extensive area to be affected by the storm's hazards," the NHC wrote.

Debby was the last hurricane 🌀 that hit the Gulf Coast at CederKey. I am 30 miles from the landfall area. I lived in Florida, my whole life.

Not an expert, but considering the size of the system it will gain power from lake Seminole and the big bend area and the okefenokee. So it will be strong up to Tifton, Cordele. Not an expert but that's my prediction

m'kay so these systems are fueled by the water temperature, the clouds are a product of the system - seeding won't do a thing

Has nothing to do with climate change these storms come off the coast of Africa and have been as far as records can show. The warm gulf waters are a result of the El Nino 2023-2024 as well as the warm temperatures across most of the country

So, it is all a prediction that the path and category will be what they are. Weather can do crazy things, and I have been through over a dozen hurricanes in my life living in all of the Gulf Coast states. From the way they are talking that it will stay a 3 for a while, and I feel like it is possible to increase to a 4 during that time. It just depends on how fast and how much time from land it is after it hits 3.
