I'm starting the hand scraping and flaking part of the Restoration and Rebuilding of a nice Bridgeport Mill. This mill has chromed ways and the column has very little wear. In order to save the chrome way I have elected to just freshen up the flaking on the column and in this video I start to figure out how they make the flaking pattern and duplicate it!

Steve, I enjoy your videos, but this one I have a bit of a problem with. I have scraped professionally for 40 years, and have been teaching Machine Tool Alignment and Fit over the last 10. While power scraping is more efficient, it lends itself to developing bad habits, such as when you race the stroke at the end. Hand scraping demands patience. Hand scraping, particularly flaking, makes the cutting action more evident. It's not my desire to be critical, but I've been seeing a trend of scraping training lately, that seems to be focused on the appearance of scraped surface, rather than the purpose. I teach scraping for free also, but when a student takes my course, they are given a spirit level, they calibrate it, then I take the level to a belt sander and I quickly hit the precision surface while applying pressure to one corner of the level. Their task is to make the level true again, with a minimum of 16 points of contact... without any calibration adjustments. In scraping, making a surface flat is an elementary task, but with machine tools, it requires a geometric relationship to another surface(s), that is the goal in precision scraping.

Would think that someone who worked at Bridgeport in the past would come online and give some details of how it was done at the factory yeats ago. Would be an interesting discussion. Anyone out there?

I really think the change in radius of the tool is the answer Steve, but I think you went about it rather haphazardly. You need to do a smaller area at a time and notate the settings on the tool so you can replicate it again. Once you choose a pattern that you want for the Bridgeport, you can dial those settings in and go for it for real. Looking forward to seeing you do it sir! Cheers from the UK ps I hope you had a nice dinner!

Some of us still have enough brain power to remember all the things that were tried without having to write them down... Heck even Don can do it :) Nothing Haphazard at all....

This is not a skill learned overnight. Might wanna try scraping in a small camel back for starters. Maybe even look for a class. Wish I had the spare time to take one, looks pretty cool.

Lets see. There have been 7 scraping classes held at my shop over the years... Richard King was the teacher... I have planed hundreds of straight edges and even scraped 7 of them hanging on my wall :)

Well, reading the other comments here and what my inexperienced eyes saw, I would have never guessed that. Maybe Richard can come back for a refresher course?

Could the Bridgeport flaking be thinner because the high spots are worn down a bit?

don't think so, they are still pretty defined

That’s sweet you went all out when you got into scraping. Maybe this winter I’ll do my Bridgeport but I have to get a beveled straight edge first

The long-awaited scraping video! Once you get the rust shook off you'll be in fine shape to scrape in the camelback, the rails and all the rest. I just started learning and I'm sure I'll get to learn a thing or two from your videos.
