I've come to realise that goals are mostly pretty dumb. They can narrow your thinking on the way to the goal ("If I want to get a million subs, I can only make certain, specific, crowd-pleasing videos!") and then leave you listless and confused after you reach the goal ("What do I do now? 2 million?"). These days I try to focus more on the day to day, just making sure I enjoy whatever I work on and feel creatively satisfied. If that leads to rewards/milestones/etc then great, but if not at least I had fun.

It was only when you mentioned the sub count that I noticed it. I thought your channel would have at least a million followers because in my social circle everyone knows you and consider you a high quality content creator. Thank you for your great work. Now I feel even more privileged to have followed you for years. I guess you are similar to what Bronies would call "Horse famous": Very well known and admired within a specific audience, but you get to live a normal life of not getting bothered on the streets as the general public is not your audience. Thank you for 10 years. Congratulations 🎉

When you announced that you were doing "Let's play" content I was so worried that I'd be spammed with "easy" content from you, when in reality I only wanted your analysis. Very happy that you put that on another channel (that I never looked at). I would definitely be down for you analysing other things than games. To me Errant Signal isn't so much about analysing games, as it is about analysing things generally in detail.
@LtSprinkulz
@LtSprinkulz 3 жыл бұрын
As someone who does LP content but hates wasting the viewer's time I can tell you it's not easy. Especially if you do everything yourself. Lots of big LP channels are a crew. I schedule, record, edit, and promote everything myself and it's grueling. I enjoy doing it, so that's why I do it, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone else. The channels that make "easy" content only do so because they carry their whole channel on their personality or have a lot of help. I rely on my editing style a LOT. I guarantee no other LP channel spends 5 hours editing a video that will only last 5 minutes. It's a lot of work, and not what I'd call "easy" content. I'm not upset or mad at you or anything btw. I just thought you'd like to hear the perspective of someone who does LP content any why, if you want your content to stand out, it's not as easy as you might think. There's a million other kids doing similar stuff to mine. I _have_ to make it unique or it doesnt even grab a dozen views.

@AileTheAlien
@AileTheAlien 3 жыл бұрын
There's actually quite a few programming languages that use "boolean" for variables that can only hold two values, rather than using it to refer only to the logic you can perform with them. (For example, `const gameEndState: boolean;` in typescript.) I never thought it was inappropriate at all for Campster to use the term in this way.

I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to an older fish and says, "I'm trying to find this thing they call 'the ocean.'" "The ocean?" the older fish says. "That's what you're in right now." The screen with the videos made me want to rewatch a few of them. KZbin started out as a place for people to upload their stuff. On the one hand, you do not have a wide audience. On the other hand, the audience you do have consists of tons of people who like being really thinky about video games. And at least some of those people tend to be important for the discourse. You wouldn't necessarily get that with a wide audience only here for the jokes. So, at the very least you curated a quality audience, which is nothing to sniff at.

Such a thoughtful piece. I was prompted to comment when you touched on how you had initially dreamed of doing this channel full time. It may well still happen for you friend, your quality and original thinking is a great offering to the mediums of both video games and video essays. Seriously! But it will be a little bittersweet the day you get the recognition you deserve: your work here is that of the outsider, and so it has inherent value as something that can't be seen/heard elsewhere. I always had things to say about the stuff I consumed, but no one really wanted to have a conversation with a rambling child about some obscure IP. Errant Signal was one of the first channels I eventually found that showed me people DID like talking about art! Whether it was a deep dive into granular details or wholistic ones, whether the ideas were developed fully or barely at all, I was HERE for the discussion about it. I haven't commented much because I don't like having much of an online presence, but I have been here for many years. In a very real way, I've grown up and matured alongside channels like yours. its honestly mostly due to your channel that i started viewing games through their themes which has helped me develop better critical thinking skills. like honestly your work is super invaluable in opening the door to discussions about what games are doing under the hood in their narratives and their mechanics where other outlets are largely saying the same things back and forth.

Reckoning this past year of depression and arrested developmwnt with the realisation that "this is it" and that I will likely never "arrive" in the way I thought I one day would, it is inspiring to hear a stranger whose work I have followed for years at this point share similar insights. For what it is worth, Errant Signal did play an important role in deepening my love for and ability to think and talk about games as an art form. Regardless of the original hopes for the channel, its past and present form in reality has always been valuable to this viewer. Thank you for continuing to share your work.

Everything you have put out has been a massive inspiration for me and I come to watch purely for your voice as a writer. I encourage you to keep making what you want to make because that is what I look forward to most. Cheers for the 10 years.

As a naive 21 year old engineering student who loves video games and has recently started testing the waters with game development, I can say I really appreciate having found you! You have had a big influence in how I think about how game mechanics can tell stories and are honestly just really inspiring. I guess all I can say is thank you and I can't wait to see and be inspired by whatever else you choose to make!

I love your content, thank you so much for all the hard work you have done, and thank you for this introspection on creative endeavors (and how shitty capitalism can be in ruining those endeavors by placing it into win states inadvertently). Here to another x amount of years of you enjoying this!

I've been watching you since I founded Kitsune Games 8 years ago and while I can't point directly to something in my games and go "that! that exists because I watch Errant Signal!" I'm positive that your videos have altered the way I think about game design and so have affected the way I make my games. Anyway, congratulations on 10 years, and thanks for the videos.

For some reason KZbin stopped recommending your videos to me during the pandemic. And now I just noticed I wasn't subscribed, which seems insane given how much I love & binge watched your content. I can completely relate to the drive to create, and the struggle to maintain it as a hobbyist game designer. The sacrifices required to successfully go full time just aren't something everyone with a family can reasonably make, but I for one am glad you continue on!

Its funny but the games I have the most time in are those without a clear and concise win state or sandboxes where the winstate often gets ignored because I'm enjoying simply playing the game.

It's funny how your channel is relatively very small, but I think for anyone who enjoys game critique/analysis, you've cemented a spot on our front page since basically the first time we searched on a small game we'd played that we wanted to see if anyone else has played and had thoughts on. Every game that has made me think and feel a lot after finishing it, there you've been with a video for it, offering a perspective that is sometimes the same as mine and sometimes adds even more insight than I'd even considered. There is a handful of channels that I enjoy in the same way, and it's something special to share thoughts and perspectives on all those little games that meant something to us. Thank you for the past 10 years and I'm happy and excited that you will keep going, at your own pace and according to your own desires.

It's unfortunate that your channel never took off the way you hoped it would, and that because of this you felt like you haven't accomplished what you were originally aiming for. I feel you and understand the sentiment. But I am quite glad to hear that you are intellectually honest enough to express & discuss these things openly with us, and for on top of that still recognizing & appreciating the beautiful aspects of what you do have and what you did manage to accomplish with your channel & content. The small community getting to witness your essays wholly appreciates you & everything you do, so please keep it up, no matter how small or infrequent. I am fine with the pacing of your release cycle and the lengths of your videos, it feels exactly right, as if the requisite amount of time & effort was appropriately put into the crafting of each video. You might not feel this way, but believe me when I say that I hold you in the highest regard and consider you as one of our all-time great video game intellectuals, philosophers, and analyzers. Your essays are top-notch, extremely insightful & profound, and address every aspect of the games in all the right ways. You provide unique insights, tackle hefty subjects, and have genuinely impactful ideas to express in each one. Your essays are my go-to recommendation for validation of video games as an art form, and for exposing the intellectual basis of the medium. So on behalf of all your viewers, I sincerely thank you so much for all that you have given us, even if you never got the reach you deserve. (The vast majority 'make it' out of sheer dumb luck, so don't sweat it. This is why so much mediocre content flourishes while hidden gems like yours remain exactly that, hidden gems.) You've given us something priceless, something that we are all lucky enough to have found and get to appreciate. Here's to another 10 years of Errant Signal, with more of the same genius content, however infrequent it might be.

"Boolean" is fine, in programming it often is used to refer to a data type that's just a single bit, or true/false, which is exactly what you mean here. Sure it has other senses, and a history as a term, but so does "binary". Maybe an actual game designer could come up with a better name, but your name definitely isn't factually incorrect, at least 😁
@afaulconbridge
@afaulconbridge 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer "boolean" because the overall win state is often a logical combination of smaller win states - to win the game, you have to win every level in the game; as soon as you stop doing the thing that "wins", you "lose".

Agreed. He beats himself up over using "spartan" instead of "sparse" in the show notes as well, but both of them include "austere" as an accepted definition. At worst its a minor stylistic issue of preferred usages, certainly not a mistake. Too tough on himself.

Man I wish this video came out 2 years ago, when I realised I would never get the job I trained for the past 10 years and felt really depressed about it and wondered why I absolutely HAD to reach the objective I set for myself at the beggining of the level... I mean the beggining of my studies. Keep up the good job man, your show is awesome.
