Do you want to be brilliant at what you do? Well, I once read that all you need is 10,000 hours of practice. That’s the soundbite, anyway: in reality it’s much less simple. But practicing correctly is WAY more important than simply racking up mindless hours of practice time.
In this weeks video I’m going to be showing you how to supercharge your practice time! You’ll also find out why I keep an Ampeg B-15 in my kitchen!
In this video you’ll learn:
- How to organise your practice routine.
- How to stay inspired by setting specific SMART goals.
- Why you should ALWAYS keep a practice diary.
- And why I avoid practicing with tab and notation.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Q: When it comes to practicing, what is your biggest frustration? A: Lack of knowing what to really work and practice on. Find myself more than often putting my bass away because I practice the same old things and then get bored of them. Hearing you call this out made me aware of it at least!

A great way to keep things fresh is to switch off between your fundamental technique (plucking technique, scales, articulation, etc) and learning songs, which is fun, gives you a context to apply all the work you've done on your technique, and trains your ear. I'm new to bass but have played sax for appx 10 years, and applying the same type of learning has really helped me push myself forward. I hope this helps ((:

I agree... It's a problem. I think that the way to break that log-jam is getting out there and playing with others. Many players don't recognize that in addition to practicing to perform... they perform to practice. "Just getting better" isn't the goal in itself. The goal is to perform. So the performance, or merely playing with others provides both the motivation and the material to practice.

Thanks for your lessons. One more important advice: stop watching bass videos too much. Sometimes it replaces entire exercises and I found myself watching your channel for 2 hours with a bass on my neck. That's sad:) So if you're bass player and you read it - press alt+F4 several times and take your bass right now!!!

know your scales, it can get boring but you need to know where a c is anywhere on the fretboard (and other notes too), then if you are practicing songs by ear, you will have a much easier time figuring out the notes after you know the key

I'd suggest picking up the book Hal Leonard Bass Method Complete Edition (or something similar) and starting at the beginning. You'll learn fingering, positions, basic technique-and, god forbid, reading notation! Just do a page or two every day. You'll see immediate progress.

1. Have specific SMART goals for each practice category 2. Keep a practice diary 3. Approach practice like you’d approach working out (essential practice categories) 4. Record yourself 5. Remove distractions 6. Practice 4/5 days a week 7. Keep yourself inspired (look to the gods of bass) 8. Imitate then Innovate (increase bass vocabulary by imitating bass gods) - transcribe using your ears!!! 9. Make everything a habit 10. Reduce the friction (make it as easy as possible for you to pick up that bass) Made for reference. Great video. SBL is an insanely great resource for bassists. Any class on SBL will take you to the next level, even the “beginner” targeted ones. I’ve been playing bass less than a year and have taken 2 SBL courses and they are really good

Hi Scott. Thanks a lot for this video. When I see you, I realise how logical is what you say. It’s the way I put in place in my job. Not sure why it’s different for me when practising bass guitar. I think that in my case it's a matter of lack of discipline. No diary, no targets and frustration as I do not see progress. I use to “practice” at the same time and place every time (4 times per week) but usually I end up trying to cover a song that I found in Spotify, looking for the guitar chords or the bass tab and try to follow it. Nice advice today about trying to do if by “ear” directly… I need to create the habit… Nice day

"Never ever put your bass away" I agree. I have my 7 basses sitting out in the open in my basement man cave/music room. That is great advice, but sometimes it's to my detriment. For example, yesterday I was painting a room in my home and went to the utility area in my basement. Guess what room I have to pass to get there? Well an hour later after jamming, I got back to painting. I'm also working on a 1988 Ford F250 pickup truck project I'm bringing back from the dead and I sometimes have to go to the utility room for a tool while working on it. Yep 1 or 2 hours later, I get back to work on the truck. My wife wants the truck running and out of the driveway! LOL!

The guidelines here are very helpful. A couple barriers to me are motivation to get started on practice, but then what to practice for how long. There are more, including that I can't narrow down what I want to accomplish. I like most genre of music, so organization is difficult. My practice space isn't ideal, so I know it needs attention. The room itself is a distraction. Been on the fence about this course, in part that I'm in the middle of one of the courses in the library, but this has helped. Thanks again!

My Bass is in the suitcase right in my bedroom and a lot of times i think "maybe i should practice a bit", but just to think about opening the case, taking it out and then need to put it back in etc, messes with my mind :-) Ok maybe i'm a little lazy :) :) :) Anyways, from now on my bass will be out in my bedroom and i am pretty sure that i will practice a lot more. So nice to know that this is a "real problem" and it's just not for me being a lazy person :) :) :) Take care Scott. See you in the Shed

Thank you, Scott! I'm going to try to keep a journal from now on. I think one of my biggest obstacles is maintaining a good practice routine. Oftentimes I'll just run through 2 octave major and minor scales going through the circle of 4ths or 5ths with a metronome, and play up and down the modes and the 7th chord arpeggios of each mode (based on ideas from you and Adam Neely). But I'll usually end it after that. I've been meaning to also practice melodic and harmonic minor, and double harmonic major scales and their modes; but I never get around to it. I've also got books on drum syncopation and jazz improvisation that I've been trying to study with a lot more recently.

Hi Scott , I've been a member since you started the website. I discovered your KZbin lessons first. I see many comments regarding not knowing what to practice or work on. The website has some delineation of skill learning. Even though I know how to breakdown the complex to specific skills, I too often wonder if I use the method process that is effective. I think if you show a walking bass line then the skill practice process in order you recommend that could assist a lot of us to learn how to organize our practices. I know you have done this in all your lessons so exceptionally but you have how many thousands of videos to date. I think pick a relatively easy song or songs show the Bass line, delineate the skills necessary to play then organize the practices in your recommended order in a fashion that beginners would start at the first and more skilled at points where they need improvement. You are definitely responsible for the majority of my music theory and Bass/guitar playing skills and progress. Thank you and Blessings to you, your family and all associated with Scott's Bass Lessons!

As for rule #10, that is one thing I like about passive basses -- no need to unplug to prevent the battery from draining. My bass is on a stand, plugged in, and an arm's reach from the chair where I sit in my home office. Playing means flipping the switch on the amp and picking up the bass. From thought to action in under 5 seconds.

I played for many years in cover bands, playing other people's music. I learned everything I know by playing 45 to 60 songs on a Friday and Saturday night for years. I moved, and lost interest because I didn't have a 'band' responsibility. I tried to join another band, but I was not willing to start over. Job and life were more important. I slipped into not playing more and more infrequently. 1 year ago i traded most of my professional amps and speakers for a shiny new P-Bass hoping it would invigorate me. It did not have the desired effect, but I am glad I made the purchase/trade. You struck a chord with 'vocabulary'. I realized quickly that i never really had one, although i could play close to 100 songs at the drop of a hat. I am feeding my brain with what i want to play, and i keep coming back to old R&B/Funk from the 70's. Tower of Power to Funkadelic. I am looking to KZbin for inspriation and honestly have found quite a bit of it with your channel Scott. Thank you.

This is likely the #1 reason why I scream at my kids to practice with a metronome. It is a very objective starting point. Either you can play xyz at xBPM or you can't. Then you can work from there. That's a crazy over-simplification, but same is applicable for most disciplines. Cheers, Scott!

Great video! Could I ask, please, for you to write down the bassists names that were appearing when you were taking about inspiration? I don’t know many of them as I’m new to bass yet. Thanks a lot!

ALSO. 10:20 If a task is to learn how to build bass parts in combination with ensemble work, then studying the parts from ear to bass, needed to be alternate with studying the part from ear to paper. This will create a sufficient understanding of the structure, as well as provide an opportunity to learn not only bass parts, but also the parts of the whole collective

Dear Scott, I really learned a ton from you and I wanna thank you for that. Do you really feel the necessictiy to do these clickbait-y titles? I almost feel like I wouldn't wanna click titles that seem like "Be filthy rich in 3 Weeks". You don't need to do that. You are a great teacher and a really nice guy. I wouldn't write that , if I didn't like you and your content.

Dear Scott, I hope you will read this. It all sounds cool like SMART system stuff and other obvious lean shit behind. The real problem of all teachers that they do not realize what their students really need. They think they can give systematical info, but real practice not in learning like C major scale, but really learn C major open chord first, then learn like part of scale on A string in first position, then on D string, etc etc and then join notes from A-D and move through back and forth and so on and so on, and it is only about learning C major. And it all starts from very beginning when student decides to switch to C minor. I've been told over9k times about all these scales, boxes and kind of that, but I still frustrated because on practice, it happened to learn way more ez notes around CAGED chords. And it is becomes way easier step for improvisation, rather that going to any other stuff. for me as for 6string guitard it is very obvious way intuitively understanded by me. I haven't heared that from anyone when I was learning years ago, everybody was like wanna improvise - go for scales. And once I figured it, I found i need to learn chords inversions, and once I found that I feel need of practicing that more, so it becomes a total mess, because before going to real useful practice, you should learn like 3 years full time educational course of musical theory, and also huge problem is I work only on tree tone chords, and I have no idea how to keep head not cracked going for like that stuff about major scale chords progression with Major7 minor7 b7b5 and dim chords and what scales match these ones, and vice versa - which chording goes for different scales (I mean when you use all these classical scales) also, what purpose of half-one and one-half scales? what are these? I believe I should understand scales harmonization for getting the answers, so it is like plus one half of the year to my current plan. I really come to conclusion that if you have no ear for music, learning will turn into blewdy hell and you will never achieve anything more than repeating few songs from tabs. Talking about wrong teaching I do not mean you. Moreover, I'm grateful that you give all these small hints how to improve time with BASS, you do really well talking about this. And it really helps Keep going, be the one who inspirit people playing BASS! Make the world better. Also think of local pricing for 3rd world countries (let's be fair, it's real name). Let the POWER of BASS flow through YOU and others kr a

My biggest gripe with practice is knowing WHAT to practice. There are so many things to practice, and I never know what to work on first. Should I go over these scales? Should I try to learn a song? What's the best way to learn this technique. My practice is all over the place, and I end up playing the same things over and over. This video helped, but unfortunately I'll be missing the practice accelerator. Hopefully you'll be offering it as it's own course for like 30-40 bucks in the future. I'd hella buy that.

Thanks for your videos ! I really enjoy your videos even that I'm a pro! I studied and play my Baby sind 22 years. My question is: Is it possible maybe to do a video for Pro's like how to make the horizon bigger sometimes you have the feeling you stay at the same point even you are practicing for 5 hours. What would you say?

Thanks for the information! Though I was kind of surprised when you said not to use music notation to learn a bass part. My reading ability is my biggest frustration. I've been practicing on James Jamerson bass lines and it seems impossible without reading skills.
