10x12 Modern Work Shed - Part 2 - Framing The Floor

We’ll be framing up the floor for the modern work shed. You’ll learn what crowning is as well as other tips to make it easy for you to assemble the 2x8 joists into the base of your shed. We’ll start with marking out where you’ll attach the joists on the rim joists, attaching the rim joists to the skids, cutting the joists, assembling it all together and doing some extra reinforcement between the skids and joists.

The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

I don't know what you are calling skids. They look like 4x4 or 4x6. May I ask, what is holding them in place ? About 12 years ago I built a 10x12 shop, next to that a 8x10 bathroom and then next to that a 10x12 storage. Because where I live you don't need any permits if you build 120 s/ft or less. But I did put it all under one roof. I put down a little gravel leveled it all out. Then I sat 4x4 on top of that. Drilled 3 holes in each 4x4, then pounded a piece of 3 foot rebar into each hole to hold them in place. Also may I ask why didn't you just use the block to build on? About 7 years ago at the same location. I built a 16x24 2 story barn type garage. For the foundation I used those 16x6x8 blocks. I dug a trench 6" wide and 6" deep . I packed down 2" of gravel. I put the blocks on top of that. Then I pounded 3 foot rebar into every other hole in the blocks. Then I filled every hole with concrete. In the holes that didn't have rebar I installed bolts to attach my 2x6 bottom plate. I used 2x6s downstairs and 2x4s upstairs. I live in California and have been through numerous earth quakes and nothing has shifted or cracked. Anyway you gave a lot of good tips to everybody. Keep it up......

I noticed in some of these shed floor framing videos that some people are using screws and some are using the nail gun. Is it just personal preference or are there advantages for one over the other?

screws are stronger, but overall a bit more expensive.

Mostly preference. Nails are generally easier to work with on framing.

Depends somewhat on the kinds of loads involved. Shannon on the HouseImprovements channel says nails have more sheer strength than screws, so he recommends nails. Bob Vila says "Nails are often preferred for structural joining, including framing walls, because they are more flexible under pressure, whereas screws can snap." Screws would better resist a "pulling apart" force of course.

Good video! I'm doing a 10x12 shed and just getting ready to start the floor. I haven't got the lumber yet but I may be using pressure treated 2x6's for my floor. Is it necessary to use treated lumber for the joists?

I was also wondering this, in the plans I purchased it said if i'm using skids I would need pressure treated lumber for the floor joists, but in this video, they did not use PT wood for all of the joists. Wondering if the extra expense is actually necessary.

Pressure treated wood is corrosive to regular nails and screws. Screw's and nails designed for pressure treated wood will have a coating that resists rising and the corrosive nature of the lumber.

Why do you shave off 3 inches for each joist? If so, I am building a 12 x 16 Shed, should I trim off 3 inches on each joist as well for a squared joist?

Each joist attaches to the outer rim joist on each side. Lumber isn’t actually 2 inches thick, it’s 1.5 inches thick. So if you want a base that’s exactly 10 feet across, you’d need to account for the extra 1.5” these rim joists add on each end of the inner joists. 1.5 x 2 = 3 inches.

He did place the joists on pressure treated skids. I rimmed out my own shed with pressure treated due to some weather exposure. I used non treated for the interior joists though. Great build .

Great info! Would you know what degree of cut I would need on both ends to fit my 2x6 true A-frame shed rafters (shingles from top to bottom) to the floor and the 2x6 ridge board at the top on a 12'x12' floor? Like both sides of the 'A' are the rafters.

This Aug. 2020 I bought 8 2x8s, 8 2 x 10's , 3 12 x 14ft, 14 joist hangers, 2 3 board beam holders, 6 sheets of 5/8 plywood (one side finished), plus strong tie bolts, nails, primer and paint, for about $600 (delivered) With this I will do a 12 1/2 ft x 8 1/2 ft (about a 106 sq. ft) loft. Lumber prices have increased this summer, as production declined and demand increased.

I shouted over to my neighbor the details and progress of your video, which I thought was very, very good. This guy, who calls himself "The Swiper", when you mention that it would be all right to toenail the joists instead of using the right angle braces, said, "tell him 'Hey jerk, get your ten inch twisted wallet out of your ass and buy the Simpson Strong ties - and grow the blank up!'" I said, "'Swiper'" he in fact, ended up using, mostly, the strong Ties". The Swiper says, "Toenailing, is for impatient kitty Schoolboys who have to rush off to have their mommy help them take a wee wee". Anyway, I liked the video.
