@kmemz3 жыл бұрын
If you try this again, you should swap the motor of an existing mechanical sharpener, or otherwise build your own tri-gear sharpener. It seems like the three cylinder gear setup that the typical crank and electrical sharpeners use works a lot better than bladed for high RPM sharpening, the bladed designs are mostly good for low RPM high torque cutting, such as the intended use case of being compact and handheld.

@@WesleyKagan a dual blade with 2x opening for shavings to exit may end up being the ultimate design. This would split the length of the shavings in two, allow twice as much material to be removed in the same time frame, would provide a more even cylindrical cut of the pencil, and would eliminate the offset force created by the friction on only one side of the pencil. There is angular force being applied to the shaft with the singular blade design which most definitely causes a fuckload of issues.

omg, thats awesome, about 20 years ago when I started teaching, I was cleaning out the shop and came across an old pencil sharpener, and a wood router.. I said, hey why not.... So a afternoon after school a few students stayed after and we built a very scary sharper that ate a new pencil just a few seconds. The best I can remember the router spun somewhere around 15000 rpms, the vibations and noise the hand pencil sharper made were so unique I can remember them to this day. My principal was walking by and stopped in and said, love the creativeness, but not so much the lack of safety.. I smiled, he smiled, we laughed about it for a few years after. Its been years since I thought about it and was a forgetten memory till now.. Thank you for the old memory, and chuckle along the way... Happy Holidays, Chad

You can possibly measure the rpm by finding out the pitch that it makes, and divide that pitch by the number of blades on the wheel, which gives you rps. Then it’s just a matter of multiplying by 60 to get the rpm. I’ve used this on mouth powered turbines too, and they can get stupid fast.

Wesley, as one who doesn't like committing to ink, I very much prefer pencils. I do prefer wooden pencils, but use mechanical ones due to the required maintenance of constantly sharpening them. I think an 11k rpm sharpener is a wonderful idea! I think the problem is the sharpener is designed to turn a few rpms. The plastic material has too much drag and would heat up. The blade angle is too steep and would dig in. Also, it seems to clog up. A redesign to make it easier for the waste to exit and maybe using the waste air to blow out the shavings would keep it clear. Merry Christmas and looking forward to a new year of cool projects! Thanks for the video!
