Chrysler Air Raid Siren was the size of a car. It measured twelve feet long and six feet high, and weighed an estimated 3 short tons. The gigantic siren was powered by a 180 horsepower eight-cylinder gasoline engine, that drove a two-stage air compressor and a rotary chopper. The compressor pushed 2,610 cubic feet of air a minute, at nearly 7 PSI, through a rotating chopper that sliced the air into pulses to create sound. The compressed air exited through six giant horns with a velocity of 400 miles per hour. This resulted in an incredibly loud sound of 138 dB, measured 100 feet from the siren. The loudness of this siren remains unmatched by any warning device ever produced. These sirens had other uses also. One was aboard ships, to clear fog. The incredible volume would actually cause moisture to condense and precipitate as rain. They were also known, in dry conditions, to cause nearby trees to combust.

Not really. They took 30 minutes to reach their target, but by the time NORAD detected them, the full chain of command response, POTUS located and hemming and hawing his once-in-a-lifetime decision, reporting, down all the way to a local yokel cranking up one of those things, the sound waves might hit your years right as you saw the flash of blinding light. And coastal cities wouldn't have time for any warning at all, with just a few minutes between a sub launch and strike. The local siren operators wouldn't even get a heads up.

I recall an incident when the sirens sounded by malfunction or mischief late one afternoon in November 1962 and seriously scared many people. That just happened to take place when tension was running high nationwide over the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time in history when the Soviet Union and the United States came closest to armed conflict. When the siren went off, I was at after school on an athletic field for sports practice. I remember hearing the siren like this one sound and a chill went up my spine. I thought is this for real! Luckily it was not. Routine testing of those sirens stopped in 1985. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, I remember the grocery store shelves were empty as everyone was stocking up on supplies just like the recent pandemic stockpiling. Bomb shelters were a popular item during those cold-war years. Our neighbor even built one in their back yard.

Some quick searching seems to indicate that this event is a fairly big deal, so I hope the traffic we see is just event traffic that is fully aware of whats going on. Did it have an automatic throttle (or other device) to make the pitch go up and down, or did someone have to actually man it?
@MrLazer12113 жыл бұрын
The pitch you hear is from the siren rotating, under normal use they don't change. Even the newer ones on light poles that don't move actually rotate where the sound comes out of it's not all horns at once.
@thomasdaily43633 жыл бұрын
@@MrLazer1211 @Lazer1211 Actually yeah, the pitch does change, as the oscillation of the air changes in frequency. This change in frequency is caused by the blades in the siren spinning faster or slower, caused either by a change in RPM of the engine by a throttle or by a transmission. That was my question. Thanks the lesson in the physics of sound, though.
