I've powered 3 fishing kayaks over the past 5 years. Two using trilling motors and the last powered with a 9.9 gas motor. I had to build custom mounts (all mounted at the stern) for the motors, and never used over 1/4" 6061 plate I never had any bending or distortion of any kind.
@anonamus48604 жыл бұрын
Good job. But I must tell you when it comes to propelling a kayak the KISS rule applies. The more electronics you introduce on the water the more problems you will have. Electronic speed controls and motor drives will fail , if not from stress when prop gets fouled with weed or shallow water , corrosion will destroy them. I learnt this the hard way doing what you have done. In the end I fitted an off the shelf 12Volt brushed motor, 50 lb thrust , steered the kayak with the oars , fitted marine grade circuit breaker in case of prop fouling. No more problems, easy to maintain. Keep it simple on the water. Do more fishing than cruising. I prefer to use Lead Acid Battery over Lion . When Lion battery reaches low voltage state it just shut off, Lead Acid Battery will keep prop turning on 12Volt motor even at 6 volts, will be good enough to get you home without paddling.

He's using lipo's which are so unbelievably much better than lead acid that I can't believe you even mentioned Pb acid. As little as 2 years ago, 8000mah lipo's would've been probably $250 each but they're cheap now. And the best thing about lipo batteries, when they die you take a nail gun and shoot a nail through the battery, shorting all the cells together, stand back and watch the show!

A Lithium Pack with a BMS will shut off before the battery gets any damage. Your Lead Acid Battery will die very quick if you go below 12V. Even if you keep it above 12V it will not even come close to how long a LiFePo4 Battery lasts.

Just paused at about 16:30 -- question. The water pump hooks up to the speed controller and circulates water... But it's a closed system, and the water doesn't pass through any sort of radiator or anything in your setup. If that's the case, will the water cooling really even help that much? I would think it might delay the heat, but over time, with use, the water temp is going to get just as warm as the speed controller with nowhere for that heat to dissipate? I mean, I spose just running it through the hose and bottle might help dissipate, but I would think that with a radiator, it would be much more efficient.
@TheGoodoftheLand4 жыл бұрын
+kaylor87 Correct. While the volume of water in the system helps to dissipate the heat if given enough time it will significantly decrease in efficiency. A proper cooling system.is coming. This was a quick test rig. You will love the full system.

That thing will be nuts with the higher voltage packs! Considering the amount of draw on that controller, you might want to make a heat exchanger out of an old heater core or something, so you can keep it submerged. That water bottle is going to get hot in a short while and burn up your nice 300 amp controller. I think you might want to invest in a better pump also. Those washer pumps are made for intermittent duty, so they won't last very long. If you can find one from an old water cooled computer setup, they're quiet and made to run continuously at 12v. Can't wait to see more on this!😁

Have you wrapped up some final builds yet? I donated to the cause but hadn't seen any final configurations on the kayaks, so I just wanted to mame sure maybe I just missed the video for that???

Surprised it didn't sink by the stern. Overkill taken to Nth degree, next one you should cut the thickness by at least half! You not putting a V8 outdrive on your kayak.

Its aluminum. The entire thing weighs five lbs. The battery is less than 10. This kayak can carry 450 lbs. The material used is certainly overkill but it plus several other pieces were picked up at the local scrap yard for $6. Can't beat that price for a prototype. I'm with you in thinking the ones made available for purchase could be 2/3 thinner.

I like that mount with contact points on 2 different planes. What is the wattage it takes to go 11.5mph? Do you know of any tandem boats that'd have mounting points similar to yours ?

I can imagine you never have to excercise again.

I found it on Amazon. It's a 500amp shunt based battery management. I will put a link in the next video. I believe it was $75. It is a hust have. I also picked up some digital temp sensors with built in switching relays for the cooling system I'm building. Lots of good stuff on the way.

Hi, I am building a scuba DPV you have the motor immersed completely, how did you waterproof it ? I followed the link but it says the motor isn’t waterproof which is why I am asking the question I guess 😊
