I stumbled across this little gem while researching silly ways to make my own silly redneck raft out of a couple 55 gallon drums with my son for his birthday camping trip. I really wanted to use some silly way of propelling our little boating abomination, and it is fun to see somebody test this one out! I'm a couple of years late on this comment, but I couldn't help but share some of the stuff I found when researching waterjets and propellers and such. You can skip to the last paragraph if you want to read the only part that a normal person probably would've posted. 😂 The VERY BASIC science behind the thrust of your leaf blower setup (or any jet/fan/propeller) really comes down to Isaac Newton's famous law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction tied to his famous formula of "Force = Mass X Acceleration." You might remember "F=M*A" from high school physics. When you are talking about systems that move fluids like jets and propellers, then the "Force" we are trying to create is usually called "thrust." In this video, the "thrust" is the equal and opposite reaction of the air pushing against the leaf blower when the leaf blower pushes the air out of its nozzle. The "Mass" is basically the volume or amount of the air/water being pushed out of your leaf blower, and the "Acceleration" is how much faster that air is moving when it leaves your leaf blower compared to when it entered the machine. Therefore, if you want more thrust from any fan/propeller, you will need either (1) bigger fan that moves more air at the same speed -OR- (2) a well-designed nozzle that sacrifices a little bit of that volume of air BUT outweighs the sacrifice by really really increasing the speed of the air coming out of the fan. (The "M" in the equation gets a little smaller, but it is being multiplied by a MUCH larger "A.") HOWEVER, if you are using the second method, then you need to know that you can only shrink the diameter of the nozzle so much until you reach a tipping point where the nozzle ends up "choking" the volume output of the blower more than it speeds up the air. That is the point where you start decreasing the amount of thrust all the way down to the silly situation of having zero thrust produced by your completely sealed air tube. (Note that Both of these oversimplified explanations assume you are not changing the speed of the fan itself because you already maxed it out or somthing. Also note that, if you want more thrust, then you would obviously want to increase both the "Mass" AND the "Acceleration" if you have the ability to do so!) At any rate, I brought all that up just to say that it is funny how our intuition makes us want to treat the air as if it is a solid stick and push it against the ground or push it against the water to get more thrust. However, we must remember that the leaf blower in this video is NOT using the AIR to push against the WATER; the blower is ACTUALY using its IMPELLER to push against the AIR! Once the air has left the blower, it has essentially provided all of its usefulness. In other words, when you put the end of the blower next to the ground, the air does indeed push against the earth, BUT the "equal and opposite reaction" of the earth pushing back against the air molecules does NOT transfer all the way back up through the column of air and push against the leaf blower. The air molecules instead just bounce in all directions off of the ground and causes more turbulence at the output of the blower. Similarly, the only thing the happens when you put the nozzle under water is you have significantly increased the pressure that the air must fight against to exit the nozzle which drastically reduces the efficiency of the blower. As a bons, putting the blower into the water also creates another source of drag and turbulence that makes it harder to move that boat. Long story short, I would be VERY interested to see you experiment with putting different sized nozzles on the leaf blower to see if you can find that sweet spot that maximizes thrust caused by speeding up the air before you start to lose thrust from choking out the volume/mass of air.

We are watching the beginning evolution of a new aircraft carrier😎 I love this video! The wifes commentary adds greatly to the almost british type comedy👍 with that said, few folks mentioned to reduce the end which will give more thrust, i would try reducing to 1/2 diameter 1st, and dont give up the video is a good one id love to see more

The chine walk on that beast looks scary. You need bigger grab handles maybe an aquatic airbag for safety. Good video G.
@BattleB3rry Жыл бұрын
So. If you consider the weight of water and the usage of a leaf blower. They’re used to create enough wind to blow leaves, meaning that they’re designed in a way where all they do is push air with zero pressure regulation. Putting a tube on it and the putting it underwater is like corking the end of the tube with air leakage slipping out back past the fan blades. Because leaf blowers are designed for max volume as as apposed to pressure the leaf blower jet boat isn’t possible, which is why current jet style boats use thruster based systems comprised of spindle like turbines. Vs a plastic fan with angular blades.
