Excellent Video, many thanks for putting it together. The one I personally would add is to buy a second monitor and use the 'second screen' option from the menus, then you can have both Session and Arrangement views open at the same time, simply the best way to do any mixing.

Try using the Sitala plugin for sample replacement - it's easier and more convenient than your method

I've been using Ableton since version 4, but I learned a couple of things here, so thank you for those. One thing I do differently though. I keep all tracks to 0db, only altering initially for the correct balance in sound (up or down, it makes no different at this stage). Then when it comes to gain staging, I will highlight all the tracks and bring down the volume of one track (still with the shift button down)and the rest will follow. This allows me to peak at -6db on the master every time, whilst maintaining the volume ratios I'd set previously.

Love that! I'm going to give it a try.

@@iykomusic I'm glad to help. One thing I forgot to mention. When the tracks start piling up and it begins to distort, I will do the above just a couple of db at a time.. it's no hardship to highlight all / shift reduce a couple of db. as long as you end up with the 6 db of headroom.

Save device as default - change the -12dB to 0dB ( yeah, I agree, its annoying to set all the time the gain knob to 0Db on simpler/sampler)

Never even thought about that! It is super annoying

If you set the default -12 in Simpler/Sampler to 0db it's instantly clipping your samples.
@MidnightRabbit

@ not really it depends on your sample. I prefer to lower down the gain knob as needed it instead of setting up the volume each time I use simpler /sampler to achieve the loudness that I want. Specially while re sampling stuff. You can double check it with your ears, and visually to make sure that is not clipping. Always it depends on the source. Maybe a sweet spot is to set it at -3dB to leave some room just in case.

@@MidnightRabbit You said it yourself already, it's because you are resampling stuff which is not the same as using loops from sample packs which are mastered (normalized) at 0db by default. Ableton is basically helping you out to prevent clipping when you use samples inside Simpler/Sampler.

@ Yeah, I mean, it is a sampler. Everyone is responsible for what is thrown at it ( one-shots, foley sounds, vocals, etc ). The input determines the output, but not instantly will clip everything at 0dB as a rule. That's why many users change the gain value to 0dB; that's why in this case I find it helpful to change the values and save it as a device's default settings. 😊 and you are right with -12Db Ableton is preventing distortion.

Great video. One thing I do differently, not sure if it's better or worse. If create an idea in one project I think maybe a project on it's own. I click 'save as' then save as a different name then delete everything I don't want. Again great vid, thanks.

Can I suggest less editing on your videos? The zooming in and out and flicking around, blips everytime your face comes on screen is so annoying and distracting. Your advice is great, keep making videos!
