11 helpful, cool, and downright clever uses for Ziploc bags. Who would have thought that such a common, household item could be so incredibly useful? Whether it's to make everyday life a little easier, for emergency and/or survival use, or even to help make your camping, backpacking, and other outdoor adventures a bit simpler... a good ol' resealable bag has you covered. A few of the uses for a Ziplock bag shown here include:

For the map tip, I'd extend the duck tape beyond the bag and punch the hole further over. It reduces the chance of any water going in if there's no hole in the bag itself

A trick I've used to pack clothes into small spaces for your pack or your carry-on. Put some of your clothes in a large ziplock... zip most of the way closed then sit on the bag. Zip the rest of the way before getting up off the bag. Compact, waterproof.

+FlashGeiger We use this technique for packing for vacation. Fold and roll up t-shirts, socks, underwear and place in large ziplock bags. Allows us to pack our suitcases more efficiently and keeps stuff wrinkle free.

Earlier this year I ran a Ragnar Relay, and used ziplock bags to keep my clothes dry for each separate leg of the race. Worked great. I also use ziplocks for my spare batteries when I'm out on the trail. Amazing, lightweight gear. Finally, the 2-gallon bags work great as a waterproof bag for my sleep clothes & camp clothes when I'm out on the trail. Great videos, man. Keep up the good work.

Good selection of tips. FWIW, I prefer the Hefty Zipper brand of plastic bags. Zipper makes it easier to know the bag is sealed. And, as was noted, good to cinch up anything that extends from the bag. Tip: Bag can be used as a glove to protect hand from contamination, if needed. Tip: Zippered bag - No need to cut off corner with water collection. Just seal 80-90% of opening. Grasp opposite corner in one hand, hold zipper in other to guide water flow. Tip: To make more heavy duty containers cover bag body with duck, duct, or clear HD packing tape. Cut strips a little longer than width of the bag to overlap the edges. Center bottom strip to overlap each side of bag.

Great info. I use a couple of the large resealable bags to package an "emergency" set of thermal underwear and a wool hat and gloves. The bags pack down small and stay waterproof. If I get drenched or accidentally go for a swim, at least I have a quick backup to help stay warm.

in regard to food packs, I often bring a)oatmeal with brown sugar added. just add hot water and you have breakfast. and b) those sidekicks fettuccine pasta packets into a ziplock with some powdered milk, extra Parmesan cheese, and a little margarine. again just add water and eat. in general you can easily make your own meals to go in this fashion by adding all ingredients and adding hot water later.

I take a new resalable bag roll it up starting with the top to put it on the inside. Then take a piece of clear office tape about the same length and seal the end of the roll. It now is a usable straw to get to shallow pools of water that can't be reached any other way. When a bag is needed just peel off the tape and open up the bag. A pancake tip: Sprinkle some grated/finely shredded cheese on top of ur pancakes after you pour the batter inside ur pan. It makes 'em cheesy and fluffy. My buddy came up with the idea on our previous camping trip, made my morning that much better.

Great tips. One use I use is if you use Freezer ziploc, you can put boiling water in them. I use them to make my oatmeal etc in so I don't have a mess to clean up.

If weight was really a concern, then I would ditch the over-sized aluminum pot and nalgene bottle first. Then replace with a smaller titanium pot + platypus bottle or something similar, but since that isn't the topic of this video, so I think some of the tips are pretty good. :)

I've been using ziplock bags for years. My only tip is that I use the freezer storage bags for most of my applications. They have thicker plastic and are sturdier for protecting my items. And yes I keep some of the regular bags on hand also. Those I use for cooking, funnel work and boots and such.

First, while they make cost a little more, every bag you take should have the slider lock. They're not only easier to use, they're infinitely more secure. The first tip is a horrible, horrible, terrible, awful, ridiculous, worst thing I've ever heard idea. There's a reason they say "never put all your eggs in one basket. If the basket gets dropped, all your eggs get broken. The same is true with meals and zip lock bags. Your meals should be in separate,smaller baggies, or you're likely to be very, very, very hungry before the trip is over. One bag really doesn't even save space. You still have the same bulk. If you want to put your meals in a large bag to avoid clutter, then put the meals in small baggies first. And then guard the large bag with your life because it's still not a great idea. Cutting off the corner before dipping the bag it a stream doesn't make any sense, either. It's just as easy to zip the bag almost all the way close before removing it from the stream. You can then pour from the opening you left, and without ruining a baggie. As for the rain pants, I don't think they make a baggie big enough to pull over my boots. I found a solution, though. I take my boots off before I pull on my rain pants.

+aureliusva FWIW, I use the Hefty *Freezer* Bags with the slider lock. Prefer freezer bags as they are more durable than storage bags, regardless of brand chosen. Prefer the slider lock for several reasons. Faster, easier than trying to line up portions of a "ziplock", and much more assurance of a good seal. As to a slider lock breaking, simple solution is to carry a couple of spare bags. Extra bags are good to have for a long, long, list of reasons. Can't think of any reason why they can't be stashed in everyones, kits. Including the gram counter folks! :-)

blow one up like a balloon and use it to raise a foot when you strain it. Helps keep swelling down or you can use it as an air pillow. Who knew right? Cell phones work best when in a ziplock and no condensation gets in it.

Number 12 is you can use the Ziploc bag to put over yer wife's head when she's sleeping then be sure to wrap duct tape around the bottom to ensure no fresh air gets in. Then once she stops kicking be sure to put the bag over your hands and wipe down any prints you might've left then head for the hills

You should never waste a ziplog bag by cutting the corner of or something like that becouse you could need it later and especially in emegency situations it can be crytical. Reusing bags saves commodities too and is better for the enviroment as wel.

In Girl Scouts we used to make something we called a "sit-upon" for just that purpose. We generally used woven newspapers for the cushion part, and put them in plastic, I think, and made a tie to tie around one's waist to keep it handy. That was eons ago, back in the 1960s...

kinda dissapointed that most of the uses were simply, put (item) in bag, I mean, thats what they are for to put thing in to keep them together and dry ( or wet if that is your aplication ). not exactly pro tips, I think the funle use was the most useful one most would not think to do.. but the main reason i decided to comment is the put all your food in 1 bag trick. doing this, you risk contaminating, loosing and or otherwize destroying all of your food in the bag, rather then 1 meal sized portion. Tear the bag, accidently melt the bag, loose the bag, animal comes and takes the bag, fail to close the bag.. fall down and crush the bag, sending its contents explosivly out of the bag and into your pack. what if the ziplock feature fails and it is no longer a working ziplock after 1 or 2 uses. dont tell me you have never had a ziploc zipper fail, and or even tear the bag instead of opening properly. Ever hear the expresion, dont put all your eggs in 1 basket? one other note on that subject,, the 1 bag you say to keep to make all the meals in, is designed as a 1 use container, not a reusable one. You take health risks reusing them over and over and over. I just find that bit of advice to be not worth the risk to save a minimal amount of weight, and a barely larger amount of space. some uses you mised. 1 Fill bag with water, let sit in sun, put bag in a vnoch of a tree, poke hole, instant shower.2 Put socked foot in bag, put baged foot in shoe, helps keep feet dry and adds insulation when in wet, cold areas.3 keep shoes in bag to prevent creepys from getting into them at night. ( scorpions, snakes, whatever ) as well as keeping them away from the effects of rain and morning dew.4 If you have a zip, that actualy works and makes a 100% seal, blow some air into it and instant pillow.5 Use a smal zip to keep a meals worth of pancake mix, add water to the bag, mix in bag by kneeding, cut hole and squeeze out pancakes into your frypan. You can put instant pudding, and instant milk in one, add water to the bag mix it then even eat out of it with a spoon, or suck it out through a small hole.( 1 time )6 need a clean dry surface? cut open a bag and spread it out.7 put rocks in bag, tie bag closed with a shoelace, string or rope, you have a 1 hit swinging weapon that can pack enough of a punch to deter if not flat out kill many animals you might encounter in the woods. ( yes, it will break when you hit, thats why its a 1 hit weapon) You also stand a fair chance of hunting small game with this.8 a good shrarpie can turn a zip into a weatherproof thing to write on that rain and morning dew will not destroy any time soon.9 cut a galon sized into strips and it is strong enough to tie stuff, lash sticks to make a shelter, a emergencey turnicate and even a field dressing.10 put bisquick in bag, ( mixed with water ) place near a fire not so close it will melt, but close neough to get heat, yes, you can bake in the bag ( bag must be open ), you can also boil in the bag and get near the same effect, but the bag must be open ,kept from melting, and held up by a stick or wire, or however you figure to do it with what you have.11 develope a hole in your pocket? put a bag in your pocket and walla, hole or not, nothing will fall out.(edit- fixed some of the more critical typos, I cant type for shit and spell even worse, but, that dont mean i dont know what im talking about )
