I just hang out originals from talented local artists, but I've got a framed poster from the Van Gogh's "Café Terrace at Night" which I bought at the MET, and I just love it. It makes me happy; those blues and yellows, all the sufferings of both Van Gogh brothers, the struggles, the poverty, and yet such an inspiring work of art. I look at it and I think I'll go to that place once this pandemic is all over.... Maybe, if a piece tells a story and speaks about your artistic preferences, it can have a chance -you may remove it momentarily when in-laws are visiting. But you are right about the Mona Lisa. My rule is: if it makes you happy, you can frame your son's school art and proudly show it to anyone who wants to look at it.

@@SuperWoolfolk I loved that piece but now my fave to The Church at Auvers. I've been to Arles where the cafe is ( early in the month of January when it was closed) and to Les Alycamps that he painted. The good thing about being there in January is no crowds. Because it's south/southwest France, I'm sure it's very popular at other times. You definitely need to go. It was kind of a spiritual experience for me where I just connected with the place. In (at?) I love canvas prints because they’re so matte and look very “deep” and rich, even compared to photo prints without glass! The only other option I also like are acrylic prints which have a high contrast and great popping colors but aren’t as deep due to their reflections. Normal photo prints behind glass are perfectly okay but fall pretty flat for me overall. BUT I don’t think there’s a format that works well for every photo! I’d choose canvas for black & white photos and photos with lots of dark areas, acrylic for photos with bright colors, and photo prints for “normal” photos.
@Kath-Erina2 жыл бұрын
You could add a wood frame around the canvas to elevate the look of it. Kelsey from 'the sorry girls' here on KZbin made one recently at the end of her last home-reno episode. It's fairly easy and looks just soooooo much better all you need is a miter box, hand saw, wood glue and some small nails

@@Kath-Erina totally agree with you! I thought about artworks and other subjects. For example, I have a gallery wall of concert photography, and those work much better without frames imo. But family photos and portrait photography in general tend to look better framed. I think it’s because the focus is on a person, so the frame acts as a visual border that keeps the eyes locked in on what’s important. On the other hand, if it’s something like an open landscape, not having a frame allows the viewer to imagine the scene going beyond the canvas.

I really appreciate your sense of humor with this feedback! I also like that you said these decorating trends are not for a classy look. This is great advice for someone going for that look - which may not everyone. When you said these signs are for someone going for "cottage-y" or "farm-y", which is what some people are going for. I'm actually going for very warm, comforting and either "cabin-y" or industrial. I'm not going for "classy" - so I was instantly NOT offended (weird, huh?) I would love to see some advice for my style - warmer, deep and rich (darker colors - without using black). My home is simply decorated with things I like - which is all over the place so it winds up looking like no style. Thank you!

well I think to each their own.............we all have different tastes and styles, so rather than try to look "updated"...........if it pleases you, and makes you feel good...........decorate as you please and don't think about what other people might think or say........hey, it's you who lives there, not them!

I agree on mass-produced canvas prints and even canvas print portraits. But we have canvas prints of nature photography we've taken on various hikes and trips to historical locations. I love them because we have one for every place we've lived, and each one takes me to a special place/memory. And since they're landscapes, they wouldn't work as regular photo prints. If they look tacky, oh well, I'd rather be tacky and be reminded of those places every day. We have more traditional art too, of course.

My father refuses to get rid of that lighting. The first time he put them in, I told him the house seemed like a hospital. But, he changed all the soft lighting in the entire house to the stupid office lighting; his reason, "these bulbs last 10 years." 🙄 Also, impressionism is my favorite art style, I paint and have those in the house instead of buying mass produced art.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s my family had red shag carpeting in the family room. Wood paneling on the walls. The appliances were harvest yellow. My home is my safe haven. I have what I like, and like what I have. I prefer the lived-in design.
@ggsword1139 Жыл бұрын
Now the thinner curtain panel [50" across] works fabulous when you have a smaller wall with a window at which you do not want to cover but enhance [floor to ceiling.] In some of the older homes there are smaller windows on a 4' wide wall. placing [only] blinds can make it sometimes look cheap ... so we can't ever say never .....

My cabinets are that '80's style. Quaker Made, very well constructed and very expensive. They were here when I bought the place 25 years ago. I was anxious to replace them but have learned to love them and so glad I didn't rip them out. The house is an 1980 build, designed and built by a contemporary architect for his own family. I bought a 1954 cottage near under a dense tree canopy. It has has high quality horizontally installed knotty pine wood walls that I dont want to paint white like everyone and their dog does nowadays. The home also has authentic and rustic wood floors, so I installed dimmable daylight bulbs to balance against the darkness all the wood and shade provides.
