Excellent! This is so helpful. I've just been using Titanium/Permanent White for everything. But I'll now add Chinese White to my shopping list. And I hadn't even thought to use colored pencils on top of gouache - cool idea. 👍 Thanks, Cecile.

I'm not sure I agree with not doing mixes with titanium white. I always swatch out my colours tinted with both titanium white and zinc white because, as you said, they produce different tints which gives you greater flexibility with each colour. Mixing with zinc white definitely keeps the hue correct and allows you to make more subtle and graduated tints. Titanium white produces beautiful pastels but there will be a significant hue shift. Once you know which way titanium white will shift a colour it becomes another useful tool. These unexpected surprises is what makes using gouache so much fun.

Yes but I feel like it’s giving some stickiness to the mix when you use titanium white.
@bluewren65 Жыл бұрын
That's interesting, I've never noticed that. Perhaps it is brand specific? I have noticed that the mix feels "thicker" when using titanium white and also that the opacity is greater than with zinc white. @@CecileYadro

Hi Cecile. Wondering if you have a favorite set of brushes that you use for gouache. I've got probably 75+ (I know, way too many) for my watercolor and I use them but...

I've been enjoying your videos and was inspired to paint with gouache! I bought a W&N set and I'm kind of disappointed. The yellow wasn't opaque at all! It almost seems like a glaze. Is this just the brand?
@CecileYadro11 ай бұрын
No it's not the brand, it's the yellow. you can have more information here: cecileyadro.com/why-is-my-gouache-not-opaque/

Hello from Japan! can you mix watercolor pigment from the tube with gouache to paint?
@CecileYadro Жыл бұрын
What kind of gouache? white? you will get only pastel colors. I wouldn't advise you to do that, you'll get weak colors.

Wow I never considered mixing the color into white to make lighter values! No wonder I struggle with adding white. lol But one difference I've heard is Chinese white is for transparent mixing and permanent white is for opaque mixing. Do you agree with that?
@CecileYadro Жыл бұрын
I don't like to make my mixes with permanent white, it's getting the colors a bit blueish and sticky; I always use Chinese or Zinc white for mixes.
