I have heard that this shine is a general problem with Mijello watercolor as well. I have never tried it so I cannot tell, but I have to wonder whether this is something to do with what/how much medium they use. I keep wishing that Qor made gouache.

What I love about a good gouache is the velvety matte finish. A shine is a huge no for me. Da Vinci has that issue as well when out of the tube. Strangely enough, the shine isn't present when it is panned and I love using it in my travel palette. It doesn't crack as well so it's great as long as you stick to pans.

It's like a acrylic gouache? I don't try acrylic gouache, and I don't want it...if someone can compare them, it will be fantastic! Because as same as Cecile...it's weird that they have shine! So, I think it's something on the binder perhaps?
@CecileYadro8 күн бұрын
They are traditional gouache, well kind of, as they say it's an 'hybrid paint'. I compare traditional to acrylic gouache in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raWuiHmNaph8gZI

Thank you for your review. I discovered gouache for myself but i heard that it doesn't make sense to invest much since it's not conserved well. For my student's work i buy the cheapest one, like i buy primary colors + white + umbra in big bottles for USD 2.75 at Hobby Lobby. Does it make sense to get something better?

Oh yes!!!! Cheap art supplies will only make your life more complicated when using them. Getting a better quality will greatly improve your experience.

I’ve thought of setting the tube on a dental investment vibrator table (used to make dental molds to shake out bubbles. ) it might make a good tube stirrer through the vibration. Unfortunately I gave mine to my sister because we use it to make chocolate. A sonic jewelry cleaner might also work to help stir the paint inside the tube. I’m going to try that.

Downside: you gotta be super patient! You need to wait for each layer to dry before putting any more layers, even more so then other mediums thats for sure. Just a little bit of wetness and the colours bleed into eachother like mad!

I love your work! How long does it take you to finish a page? How do you make time on vacation for drawing?
@CecileYadro12 күн бұрын
Well, each page will take a different time to complete. It really depends on the complexity. I draw a lot at the hotel at the end of the day, before going out for dinner. And I travel with comprehensive people!
@kristinj963510 күн бұрын
@@CecileYadro Thank you for answering! I struggled in the past with time vs. details on location and on other occasions my travel companions wanted more attention from me. Therefore, I am highly amazed that you managed so many drawings and can dedicate almost a whole book for one vacation. I will try out new strategies by you on my next vacation because I think it's a lovely way to remember later.
@vermiliongamboge15512 күн бұрын
Thanks for this video, Cecile! It's helpful to see you use the paint already on your palette. I'm always tempted to just wash it all away. As for the gouache -- I can't stand shininess. What's worse that the finish is uneven -- it's matte here and glossy there. One of the lovely things about gouache is its matte finish. I'd run from that stuff as fast as I could!
@CecileYadro12 күн бұрын

If it weren't sometimes shiny and sometimes not, I would be happier with it. It's the inconsistency of the shininess that bothers me the most.

I really want to try this brand 😍 I’m not bother of the shine, but it reactives with water right? I bought a Russian brand of gouache and it ended up being acryla gouache but i didn’t know 😢, I did a dry gouache palette, wait for few days to try because I was planning to went out to do some plein air and you can imagine the result 😅 I realized at that moment that wasn’t regular gouache 😂😂😂

I thought (because someone here at yt said so) that the mijello platinum gouache is supposed to work in pans without crackling. That made me want to try them someday. But with the shine or sheen, no thanks. It seems even more shiney than the gansai tambi watercolors. Thank you very much for the clip. Very interesting. 🙂

I actually think this is exactly the difference between "gouache" and "opaque watercolor", one being matte and the other one not. If you try to apply watercolor thickly, you'll get the same shiny finish - I think that's just a natural property of gum arabic.
@CecileYadro13 күн бұрын
But there is gum Arabic inside of gouache too!
@buzzo19713 күн бұрын
@@CecileYadro I'm not sure exactly how, but my guess is that gouache manufacturers specifically try to negate that effect (maybe via additives, or using coarser pigment?) to achieve the matte finish. I wonder how no-additives gouache like M.Graham does that? Or maybe it also can have some shine sometimes?
@Jetblackbird13 күн бұрын
@@CecileYadro It might be a case of quantity? This obviously has a lot more in it to make it easier to reactivate than regular gouache. I know their watercolors have honey in them so these might have some in them too.

I’ve started painting with gouache just to give it a try. I spend my winters in Mexico and no longer wanted to take all my oil supplies. I haven’t had a problem and quite happy with the results. Since I’d never tried it before I went through the process of making a rather large colour wheel 😂. I prefer it over water colours, I’ve been painting with oils since 1962. Unbelievable I know. Love the knowledge you share, thank you from my heart.
