Rodents make burrows near people's homes where they can find an easy meal and an easy escape. These burrows may have one or two visible outlets above ground, but beneath is a maze of tunnels. Snakes prey on rodents and use their burrows as resting places and passageways.
This king cobra was spotted resting in a burrow outside a local villager's house in Agumbe. King cobras are known to feed exclusively on other snakes. Then what was it doing in a rodent burrow? Possibly waiting for a rat snake seeking the rat in this burrow?
Nevertheless, luring a king cobra out of a burrow was no easy task. He could easily give a slip right under our nose and settle inside the many tunnels. And if a tunnel led into the kitchen or washroom, that would be a huge risk!
With calculated moves and ample support from Prashanth, my partner in most rescues, we managed to rescue this king cobra and release it back into the wild.
One of the ways to prevent snakes from entering homes is to keep rodents and their burrows at bay by managing waste and keeping the surroundings clean.
Today, this king cobra has reiterated that lesson. Have you grasped it?

Do we have anti venom if it strikes, how long a person survive if it bites

no anti-venom for Indian King Cobra. The huge amount of venom injected by the snake makes any anti-venom redundant. Also, the snake rarely strikes and just wants to avoid humans. So an anti-venom that needs to be kept for really long time for it to be used will make it either a waste OR very expensive. So all in all, no anti-venom for Indian King cobra bite.
