A workbench might be the single most used tool in any woodworker’s shop and building a workbench is often one of the first projects for a new woodworker. A workbench doesn’t need to feature fancy joinery or details - it really only needs to be flat, sturdy and at a height that you can work comfortably. So today, instead of talking about workbench design or building from scratch, I’m going to talk about a bunch of simple upgrades you can make to whatever you’re using as a workbench.

I built my bench to the exact same height as my table saw. Comfortable to work on and expanded the capability of the saw!

I like how you tell people not to go overboard with workbench upgrades. However, there are a lot of awesome choices in this video.

Great video! I just got some t-track, multi-track and a drawer jig for my next workbench build. I'm realizing all I need to do now is get some RGB strobe lights to add to mine!

A rear or side trough is what I wanted to see. Also a magnet bar or two somewhere to hold tools temporarily while you work.

How thick does a work bench need to be to use a holdfast? I’ve seen benches that are 2” up to 6” thick. I’ve got some extra Baltic birch plywood that I really liked working with on another project and was thinking about using it for the workbench top. I will likely include dog holes, and while I’ve not used holdfasts previously, they seem like a nice addition.

Did you use Kreg pocket screws to put this together via the exact dimensions in your video plans? Or do I need to compensate for the dimensions in your Rockler download?

You can follow the plans exactly if using pocket holes or dowels.

Hey, the bench you show in this video isn't very deep like the one I just found for my dad. I was wondering if it should be deeper or how to add to it to make it deeper. The o e I found looks like the same size with the holes in the top and a side vise. I paid $125 used but in real good condition. Actually it's the one that Harbor Freight sells for $199. Did I get a good deal?

Hello Wendi, These benches are 19-5/8" wide. It is a common size for workbenches. Especially in smaller shops. Generally, you don't need much more space for working on individual parts. If you need a larger top, you could put 2 benches together, or add an extension top with folding legs, like these - www.rockler.com/rockler-rock-steady-folding-top-extension-kit - Workbenches are often fit to a personal preference. There is no right or wrong, if it works for you, then it is right.
