It's not that he's just "doubling down" on his jokes, it's that he doesn't let people take control and quickly change the subject or break him, which also shows that he remains confident no matter the scenario. All of his behaviors go back to displaying confidence in a nutshell, no matter how you flip it or choose another way to interpret what he's doing throughout these clips.

He is a great example of how anyone can come from being drug and etc addicted to someone more conscious and still haven’t lost his uniqueness. He hasn’t change himself but his bad and destructive habits, and now he wants to pass on a good message of everything he has learned, from bad experiences, and that is a great way of leadership. He still makes jokes and still jokes about his past self. That is VERY smart. That is only for very smart people. Great human!

Well I don’t know every Brit, but I do know that whilst he can be divisive, there are an AWFUL lot who frickin’ love him. I’m a massive fan of comedy and I’ve seen several comedians live. His “Messiah Complex” was not only one of the funniest and best presented comedies I’ve ever seen (up there with the recent “Sticks and Stones”), it is a cerebral and philosophical masterclass. (With a LOT of swearing and almost embarrasing vulgarity too)

One of Russell's strengths (which seems to be something a lot of the great comedians have) is breadth of knowledge. Knowing something about a broad range of topics gives him plenty of opportunity to take a conversation in a different direction - he can make a philosophical point or reference a political event, as an alternative to drawing upon personal life experience or playing with words.

He has a variety of responses because he has full command of what he knows and doesn't know in a topic, layered with the patience to listen before responding to a question. People speak with such nuance that when you listen to understand, you give yourself enough time to communicate back both that you understand their perspective and have your own unique view of the target of the inquiry.

Then, when they do, you are able to respond with your own thoughts. You don't need to have written a master's thesis on something to know reality. You don't need a meteorologist degree to know the weather, you don't need a medical degree to know when you're ill, etc. People can read up on subjects and have a working knowledge of things. People can actively listen, and can provide a counterpoint to what was just said. They know bs when they hear it. Active listening is an important skill. Too many people aren't listening. They are waiting for the other person to finish speaking, so that they can have their say/argue their point. They are too busy wanting to be heard, that they don't hear. You can't learn the other person's viewpoint, if you're not actively listening to what they're saying. The thing is, there are experts on the other side of the spectrum who are saying things that people don't want to hear. Yet, they are ignored by the masses, and shut down by the media. How are they any different from the other experts in the field? If someone isn't knowledgeable about a topic, then they don't know enough to say they aren't. Wouldn't it be a bit hypocritical to shut out their voices, simply because you don't like their message? After all, if you don't know anything about the topic, you can't say they're wrong. Don't forget that those who say they have an agenda, have an agenda themselves. I tend to not take weather advice from multimillionaires who fly private jets all over the world, and back to their beachfront mansions with their SUVs parked in their garages. All while being protected by guards armed with *those* weapons. They are the biggest hypocrites of them all.

I used to be a lot like how he is as a kid in school, I could bring my friends to tears laughing using a lot of the same humor you see here.... and its very addictive because being able to make people laugh like tha,t almost feels like having super power and one that naturally encourages you to develop it further and further...... its really mostly about having a highly creative mind and being able to think well visually...then articulate well the visuals which are often manipulated in your mind to be funny...... which I do believe most people can develop if they put the work in to do so. What most people lack though, is the confidence to do it on live tv or infront of a crowd, there is loads of people just as funny and witty as russell in the world but most don't get the spotlight.

OMG, I've been doing this since early highschool, and now it's just natural for me! I was so happy watching this and relating to it. What helped was years of basically experimenting from being an extremely socially awkward elementary schooler trying to become more social, and a lot of your videos. But when the guy says "we're running out of time" and Rusell says "no we are not. Time continues" that is not just a semantic joke. He means its a choice, we cant blame time itself if we dont spend it on something. And that is what I like about the way Rusell Brand speaks. He takes the hyperassociative rambling that every adhd-ish person does to the next level: his quick associations are connected to an intrinsic red thread. Not random, not just to be funny, not semantic. So he is able to use his associative brain in a deeper way. (It inspired me to go with the flow of my own brainstorms also more and not to block it but to redirect it and stay in touch with the core of the subject). Im just guessing that since he has to do that with his own brain all his life he now has mastered doing that with other peoples trail of thoughts as well. So he is constantly on 2 levels: you think you hear random associations but he can put things in and out of context quickly and that is what makes it real humor: to put something in another context to show off its core.

I love Russell Brand. I suspect that it's a full-spectrum awareness and presence that he's no doubt cultivated with meditation and his martial art practice (is jiujitsu a martial art?), but also that he was probably always sensitive and aware of his environment in ways that most people are not. Such 'hyper-awareness" may even be what initially lead him to self-medicate as it would be exhausting if one didn't know how to be in the driver's seat with one's emotions. It's been really great watching him lean more into his spiritual self and become such an amazing freedom-loving, life-loving presence.

With the uninterested when someone is being passive aggressive comment, I have a tendency to stop responding, sit up straight, stare them directly in the eye and have bare minimum responses until they stop. It seems to make people very uncomfortable and they generally retract and begin being less aggressive. Do you think this is a poor way to handle these situations as you are stating you should become disinterested/distracted? I was thinking the same thing! I am also one to pay even more attention and basically challenge people with my body language so as to say "I know what you're doing. Do you really intend on keep going?". I believe it's got to do with what we feel most comfortable in doing or what kind of "teaser" the person is. The more cowardly type (which I'd say is the most common) with which our tactic works, or the other type that needs this "don't feed the troll" response.

I come off as being ditzy so people don’t realize I’m keen when they’re being rude so when they say something off putting I pretend I didn’t hear them and ask sorry what was that? 90% of the time they won’t repeat it, they mumble something else and don’t try it again cuz they realize how rude they’re being

Don't be serious. Play things off. If someone is being genuinely rude then start becoming disinterested. Self amuse. Take things literally and twist them for your own fun. Don't be afraid to get close and say uncomfortable things. When sharing something personal and a failure, play it off, and with humor, state it confidently and as if it is no big deal.

Russell is one of the few celebrities with a most extensive vocabulary which helps when being clever and witty. I read somewhere that he studied the dictionary as a child. My opinion is wit (or to be witty) is something you aquire as you age. Something you work with and mold... with life's experiences and something you learn from those around you. I don't believe it's something you can just learn later in life.

The shark joke you praised I felt like she was actually super uncomfortable. He kept talking over her and she said "Why are you trying to diminish my story". Feels like if you acted like that and you weren't Russell Brand people might not take it super well.

It's possible she was offended by the impoliteness at first but was won over by the overwhelming comedy and truth of the situation. She had a social expectation to be given the space to tell her story, but couldn't help laughing when her anecdote was reduced to its essence. By the end of the exchange I think she knew, and didn't take herself so seriously as to be genuinely upset that he overrode her story. I'd be uncomfortable in that I'd know I wasn't as funny or entertaining as Russell, but entertainment is the name of the game. I think, in the name of humour, his impertinence was forgivable. Would anyone get away with that? With less inspired people in a non-entertainment setting, maybe not. Charisma on Command pointed out that it didn't touch her core identity, which is critical. If someone were to be super upset in that situation, I'd say they were insecure and take themselves too seriously. They could have a lot of fun pushing back and saying they were robbed of their story, or challenging the other person to tell a better tale.

Brand is great to listen to. Having something to actually say is the first part. A wit with nothing to say is like a pet cat with a "new car smell" , it doesn't do you or pet any good. A wit reveals but also conceals so as not to embarrass humanity any more than it deserves. If I had half of Brand's wit I'd be a veritable half-wit and that would be fun.
