I am not American so I came late to Shapiro. The moment I saw/heard him speak though, I saw all this. Whilst I agree with much of what he says I do not like the use of the very well known techniques he uses. I have seen him demolish people with valid points using these 'verbal tricks'. They are dishonest as they obscure the truth and in many cases are forms of bullying. I wish to make it clear that I am not particuarly smart nor well educated. Average at best. What I do NOT understand is why so many Americans think he is God's gift to the Right (They confus Right Wing and Conservatism) and seem to be utterly ignorant of how he does it. What he does has been known deep into Antiquity, particularly among the Greeks and Romans. Again, I am pretty conservative myself and agree with a lot of what he says. But I do not like how he goes about it.

I think the solution of "reestablishing rapport" is dependent upon the situation. Sometimes you should give up persuading the person dealing with cognitive dissonance and concern yourself with the audience. Make sure the audience understands how absurd the other arguer is and to heck with his feelings. If you do care about his feelings at all, it's with the goal of making the conversation unpleasant in order to deter the other arguer from talking about, and thus spreading his nonsense, ever again.

I work as a tour guide and I try to tells jokes and most of them hit most of the time. My experience is humor is the hardest thing to translate. So to avoid awkward bombs I strip a lot of the jokes out when my guests are predominately not native English speakers. They more often confuse people than entertain them.
