I appreciate hearing so much local history. Although I'm Canadian, my family in Nova Scotia ('Speedwell' in 1752) I'm alone in central Yukon, my Mum's family is from northern Ireland, my Dad's from England & France. Surprisingly, my modern DNA is 64% northern Ireland to the Faroe Islands with the rest in Scandinavia, England & France. Not aware of our Faroe Island connection until 2 years ago (many 1st-4th cousins)... the remote town I've lived in for over 30 yrs is called Faro. funny

Thanks for the historical background I can imagine the poverty and difficulty of scratching a living in the Hebrides and the Highlands. And of course, the large immigration to Canada in the US. After the land clearances. Scottish immigrants have contributed so much to these countries.

That piece of history was gathered from elderly neighbours by a lady called Katharine Stewart who wrote a series of memoirs about life on an off-grid Highland croft in 60s. Her series starts with 'A Croft in the Hills', and I recommend reading all of those wee books. Kx

The dead oak tree could give you some really nice planked timber or beams. Get yourself an Alaskan mill. Pine is not as good as hardwood for burning but if it’s let to dry for a long time it’s quite good, especially as you have an abundance of fallen trees that will keep your fires burning for a lifetime.

That's is really majestic, one tall oak tree stood tall, as life slipped away from it, yet another, a few yards away fell and against all odds it never gave up and grew 4 new trees, it makes me think if anyone ever needed inspiration or ever felt like a home restoration project was to big, that would a great place to go and sit for a while and ponder and feel inspired 😀 How wonderful nature is, the saying `wise old tree` seems really fitting for that one.

I was surprised to discover that I have an Irish assigned chromosome from my Iberian Peninsula mother. You have a lot of wood set poles up with a few winches and some zip lines for the difficult road. Build a nice size cart for transferring your items with the zip line

Such a quaint railroad station...reminds me of the one in PIttsfield, Maine where I was raised. We would take it in the 50's to Bangor to shop for school clothes. I remember looking out the window and seeing passing farms and hoping I would marry a man from one of these farms. It was not to be. All those farms are gone now, decaying and falling down buildings. You are living my dream. The contrast between the modern train and the station is jarring.

Two different KZbin channels you could look at. Martijn Doolaard, in the alps restoring a pair of stone houses. Make.Do.Grow using lime, hemp and sand to mitigate moisture in the lower level of a 2 storey stone house. Historical reference could be Guedelon Castle, where they used 13th century techniques. The slope behind the house could have a swale added, with drainage flowing off to one side (or both) the reduce the amount of moisture going through the ground. Lime was often used to regulate moisture in stone walls, the hemp crushed fibres add insulation.

You can use the fallen cedar for firewood! Much better than pine, almost no resin inside and burns quiet and hot but needs time to dry. All the best!

The pine is great for outdoor fireplaces...the smoke keeps te midges away, cedar is the best kindling...standing dead oak or other hardwood is the best dry winter wood.

Found your channel yesterday and loving your vlogs. Im just confused about the layout of the island. Could you help us out with a map to help put things in perspective. Or drone footage if you have one. Where you get on and off the island. Track way roads and path. My partner is a builder and ground worker. He is enjoy your videos right now and would be so excited to get a small digger on there and do your access for you. And sort your French drain and sewage. Incidently he was saying dig all the muck and concrete out of your drain lay a layer of beach shingle 6inches on a teram membrane (? Spelling) lol ,put your pipe on holes upwards good layer of shingle on top of that. Job done. By the way really enjoy the music so looking forward to future episodes. There is another channel where a Dutch chap in Italy is renovating two old stone cottages. He installed French drain underfloor heating and sewage. His name is martjin doolaard. May be of help to you. He happens to be a photographer and filmmaker by trade his channel is huge. May you can get some tips to help your channel grow lots of love ❤😊

Get a rope to tie off to pull it towards where you want it to fall. Make your first notch on the side you want it to fall and come in from the back to finish the cut. With enough tension in the rope it will pull that dead oak over to where you want it.

No adders that we've seen, just a large population of slow worms! Well, I must say I've never seen an adder...nor can I recall anyone else telling me they have! I seem to think adder bites aren't usually deadly, just painful! I wish you all the best with your move! You'll love it. Kx

Just a bit concerned - to get your logs seasoned as quickly as possible they need as much air flow as possible and there does not seem much chance of that your the Office….. Ideal for fully seasoned logs (nice and dry) but you could struggle with green logs….. sorry - “not trying to teach Granny……” 👍
