The anvil-shaped cloud you saw is known as a "cumulonimbus capillatus incus." It's a type of cumulonimbus cloud. "incus" is Latin for anvil, because of the cloud's characteristic shape. This shape is formed when the cloud reaches a level in the atmosphere where the temperature drops and the rising air in the cloud can’t go any higher. This causes the cloud to spread out, creating the characteristic anvil-like shape. These clouds often precede severe weather, such as heavy rain, hail, lightning, and even tornadoes, obviously under the cloud.

You mentioned having Slow Worms in the Rushes. Before embarking on any drastic landscaping it’s worth remembering that the Slow Worms probably use the rushes to forage for the small soft bodied Grey slugs that are one of their main food items. The Slow Worms preferred habitat is under flat stones and old broken, overgrown walls adjacent to a sunny basking area, particularly the females when they are pregnant to help the young lizards to develop in the female. Slow Worms don’t lay eggs but are viviparous, giving birth to live young. Slow Worms are a protected species.

Hi... This rings a bell with me, I bought my first old stone cottage at age 26. Built around 1770 and needing massive repairs ( Somerset, near Exmoor.) I loved doing it though at times it would make me very tired and irritable... wife was very understanding. Later, some years later... I bought another and started all over again and so it went on, now on the side of a Welsh mountain I have what will be my last home another stone cottage !! It has been fun and very rewarding.. no regrets.

That 's how I was taught to make scones . Don't work the dough too much for a light scone.Drier the dough the better. Also we didn't have measuring cups . It was a handful of that a pinch of this, a dab of that and eye it for the wet ingredients. Practice makes perfect.

Hello from New Zealand, and thank you for sharing your wonderful journey with us. katie, when you said the words "it's in your blood" concerning ancestry, I firmly believe that to be true. I'm now in my sixties and have only recently learned where my ancestors originated from. Prior to that, I've always had a deep, deep love of Scotland and the Hebridies and the skills that go with living a rural life. My ancestors originated from this area. I'm at my happiest spinning wool, knitting, weaving etc. I now live in a small town with my chickens and extensive vegetable and fruit gardens. I would happily have sheep again if I could get away with it. You're leading a life style that is very close to my heart and once again thank you for sharing it

Katie, I think the character traits you share with your late grandmother are archetypally German traits. I'm an American of 100% German ethnicity (at least as far back as 1508) and documentation of numerous relatives who had those same traits. One great-grandma was widowed with 6 children under 9 years old. She finished clearing the land, planted and harvested the year's crop. She and her sons continued farming that land for many years. A great-grandpa left his home and family in Germany as a 14 years old indentured servant. He went on to become a successful farmer and school board president. He was widowed twice and raised 9 children including 13 month old twins almost single handly. He was a gentle man whom animals and young children instinctively gravitated towards. Lastly, specific dates seem to recur in families. For example, April 13 was my paternal great- great-grandpa's birthday, my paternal great-uncle's birthday, my grandpa's birthday and is the birthday of one of my grandchildren.

This is a continuation from a much earlier vlog. This is the only ancient building on this part of the island near to the house, so they are allowed to excavate it. The well-like hole dug into the floor was the water source to keep the foodstuffs cool. This is all a theory, of course. I don't believe either of them are professional archaeologists. 😂 As for artefacts, this building has never been excavated. Who knows what they may find. But I don't expect anything to be found until they get a metal detector.

Half a pound of four [plain/all-purpose] One and a half ounces butter One ounce sugar Half teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Half teaspoon cream of tartar Half teaspoon ground ginger Half teaspoon cinnamon and spice [mixed spice] Pinch of salt One tablespoon treacle Buttermilk/milk to mix Rub the butter into the flour and mix all the dry ingredients. Warm the treacle and mix with a little milk. Add to the dry ingredients to make a stiff dough. Turn onto a floured board, knead lightly, roll in a round shape, cut into four or eight, but do not completely separate the scones. Glaze with a beaten egg; place on a floured tin, and bake in a steady moderate oven for about 20 minutes. [200 Celcius]

Katie if you do not have an egg to egg wash your scones or pies I use normal cows milk and brush the tops of scones or pastry and it works very well. My daughter can not stand to eat eggs (in baking it is all right) but to egg wash she can not stand it. Thought I would give you this tip. Those treacle scones looked delicious, what was your take on them?

I'll do that next time and use milk, thank you! They're delicious served with a spreading of butter and a mug of tea. Give them a try! Kx

Do chickens eat midges? If so, you could get some chickens and probably set a world record for the fattest chickens. 😄

Hi Katie, I have to say,I love the style of dress you wear. Do you make them yourself? If so is there a pattern I could buy.? Also, love your scones! My great grandfather moved from Edinburgh to Winnipeg to open his bakeries. He was well known for his meatpies, shortbread, and scones .I still use his recipes ❤

I'd love to see some of those recipes! What a great connection you have there. Have you been to Edinburgh? Though I do sew, these dresses are from a company called Banned Retro. Kx

Midges in November, is this usual? I’d have expected them to be easing off by now, especially once the frosts have started.

That's interesting. I think most recipes overdo the sugar by a long shot! Kx
