I remember this storm well, I was 7 at the time. It came through around 3 am just after my dad got off work. We lived near Mt Houston and I-45. We heard a loud crack of thunder and a train sound with winds that gusted at least 70 mph, knocking the power out. At one point during the storm it blew our front door open because someone forgot to lock it. Our neighbors patio was destroyed a few feet from our house. I went to school later that morning and all the tree leaves were bowed in with limbs everywhere indicating strong winds. That day we had tornado drills at school and another one touched down just north of our school. According to the NWS data the early morning tornado formed near 290 and Pinemount and crossed by MT Houston and Sweetwater near I-45, 1/4 of a mile from our house. Alicia would come a couple of months later.

I remember those tornadoes. I was 5 yrs old. We stayed in the apartments across from mytiburger at 43rd and tc jester. It busted out the windows in the back of the apartments. The neighborhood around had a lot of damage and downed trees. When Alicia hit in August I think, we went to shelter at McArthur high school. Funny how you remember some things well.

@@andrewflores1855 I found out this storm was a bow echo, even if you didn't get hit by a tornado the winds were very strong. It was actually from an outflow boundary from storms in the hill country early in the day that sparked new storms that formed near Brenham. Alicia hit on August 18th, it came through Houston in the early morning hours and was gone by 10 am. It was a small storm in actual size. IAH never even hit hurricane force winds. It uprooted a Cottonwood tree in our front yard. We went to some lawn place near FM 1960 and bought a chain saw that same day. Power was out for two days at our house, neighbors down the street didn't have power for 2 weeks because their transformer blew up.

The first tornado in 1992 touched down near Fry and I-10 and crossed near Clay and Hwy 6. It destroyed the library on Clay, damaged the West Houston Airport and damaged several homes and businesses. The Killiwood subdivision in Katy sustained severe damage. That tornado made it's way to FM 1960 and damaged the roof of a Randalls store before going back up.

@@billyfowler9423 I remember that November 1992 tornado, I was 7 at the time and I saw something on the ground with lightning surrounding it. My sister was 5 at the time. I heard that the west side took the worst hit and the east side as well. It was crazy year, during the beginning of my elementary school days.

@@teyjanetroman85 I lived in the Aldine area and didn't get much of anything that day. This one in 1983 however touched down a 1/4 of a mile from our house and destroyed our neighbors patio across the street.

I remember this very well. I was 8 and my Parents took me to Europe. We lived in Austin which had no international flights. So we had to drive to Houston to take a KLM flight to Amsterdam. We left my Dad's Volvo at my Grandparents apartment on Eldridge and Memorial drive and they drove us to the airport. I know we left on May 7th because that's the date my old passport was stamped. Anyways, on the day of these tornadoes, we were flying back to Houston on KLM on this date and our flight got diverted to let this storm pass. When my Grandparents picked us up at Intercontinental, they told us about the tornadoes. We stayed overnight at their place. The next morning, we're driving back to Austin on I-10 and I remember seeing road signs bent and a Honda motorcycle dealership sign tilted.

I remember hearing planes overhead circling around as the storm passed. They were probably instructed to fly above the storm so they could land once the storm passed. Who knows you might have been in one of those planes! It was crazy. As Ed kinda mentioned these storms were caused by outflow funnel boundaries from storms along the cool front in the central part of the state that formed in the late afternoon over the hill country. Such storms usually weaken, but the atmosphere was very unstable. We just had a similar setup a few days ago with a couple of small tornadoes west of Houston. This was an extreme event not typical for SE Texas.

Honestly my family has a history of tornado events. My grandpa and grandma’s house took a direct hit from the 1995 Dimmit Texas EF3. Luckily both of them were visiting my mom and dad In Houston. Also in 1983, in the exact tornado as this one, my parents were gonna fly on a Southwest Airlines flight to New Orleans Louisiana to visit my dad’s brother. But the flight was delayed for 5 hours because of this tornado.
