Not necessarily. Back in 83 to 93 I did time for drug related charges. I used to make more money than most of the prison staff selling food, mash, shanks, Tramp Art, plus repairing TVs-Radios-Fans.

That is a good idea, however, this isn’t a privately owned facility. There are some prisons that are privately owned and operated, but most jails are run by the county’s elected jailer, elected magistrates, and elected judge executives. The deputy jailers (corrections officers/“guards” are hired by those county officials.

I know a man who was sent to prison for selling drugs. He continued while incarcerated but used a bank account to have money orders sent to. He made so much money the first two years he was in he actually got an in-person visit from an IRS agent. The couldn't prove the money came from drugs but ended up taking about half for taxes.
