I just got my first GoPro the GP-11. One mistake I made was thinking the firmware update it conducts when powering "on". I could not get through my first poking around the setting before it would literally power itself off. It did this several times so I chatted with GP CS. They instructed me to do a manual firmware update and they emailed me the instructions on how to do this on my own. After the manual update I have not had any more issues. Just a heads up for those who may run into the same issue. Great video btw!

I disagree on the 1st point. I've found myself cursing my unwillingness to record more after missing something I would have wanted recorded. Editing a couple more minutes is not that hard, specially if you're willing to watch the video at 3x speed or more. I do absolutely agree on every single other pont, though

get a pile of battery's the thing is a hog. I ran my 11 , my 7 black and my 7 silver a lot , the fastest one to go dead is the 11 (if it dont overheat first) running them off a USB cord fixes both of these problems

Regarding the 1st point, I started doing it that way, trying to time it and make a good clip, but I would often miss things or not press record at all. Now I just record gigantic videos, then I edit them. It's not hard finding the interesting moments exactly because they are few, so you will usually remember where to look for.

Helmet mounts are definitely superior for skiing, you just need to get the position and angle right. Also the max lens mod is great for skiing as well

Your tutorials have already improved my footage quality by a lot and I've used different settings for different situations. I'm so grateful for it! However I'm curious if you have an idea, how to tackle mistake #1 better. It feels like i record for a long period of time and nothing happens. As soon as I turn the camera off, so much interesting stuff goes on. What could be a solution for that?

They have a knew feature called hindsight which records all the time and when you start recording, it saves the 15 to 30 seconds prior to that moment, so you never get caught off guard

Good advice, but there wasn't a single mention of how to extend the battery life! My first time using my gopro was cut short by the battery dying. Would've been life-saving to know about how to extend the battery life back then!

Ive spent the last week filming first person videos of my daily work tasks and just everything i do in the day. Its much easier to take 20-30 minute shots or longer, upload the .mp4 files to clipchamp (its free), sort them by date created, then string all the shots together. I speed my videos up x4 to rewatch them and can turn a normal work day into about a 22 minute vid. Just pop captions in where you want to explain something quickly or split the clip and slow down a section if you happen to be talking in the video. When you export do it in 720p they'll still look fine and you,ll have about 1-2GB video when youre done. As far as settings on camera go low with everything and dont bother with hypersmooth.

Thank you for offering this video. You made a statement that has totally changed my mind about buying a GoPro which I have been researching. I have been making instructional videos for KZbin. I am using my laptop but want to buy a portable camera so I have more flexibility in camera positioning and adding movement to my shots. Your remark that GoPro is not good for closeups and portraits has saved me from making a big mistake! Thank you. I have little experience and have no one to teach me how to use the equipment I own, so I am totally on my own in learning how to use any new equipment. Any suggestions for a good camera that will be simple for me to learn how to use would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm 80 years old and not technically savey. BTW, I'm guessing you were not using GoPro to shoot your on-camera speaking segments.

Very informative. It puzzles me that EVERYBODY talks about, the necessity of ND filters and the 180 shutter-rule. Can’t you get as good as a motion blur in post (like Davinci Studio)? One would be more flexible and wouldn’t have the hassle with the NDs all the time. Hardly anybody talks about the negatives/restrictions of using an ND filter like, color-casting, vignetting, having to use a higher ISO sometimes, not being able to use polarizers with a variable ND filter which is usually less of a quality anyway, bad stabilizing results, etc. If the motion blur is only done in post, without NDs, how good and easy is the result of a proper motion blur and quality?

Thanks for the basics, Werner! I'm buying a GoPro #9 in a few weeks to shoot from a kayak - whitewater footage plus flat water paddling, fishing and camping footage, meal preps, and gear reviews in the backcountry. I plan to mount the camera on a short tripod in the center of my kayak so that I can pivot it for vlogging. Can you suggest a self-contained microphone system for voice that can also pick up woodland sounds (birds and animals beyond a few feet.) Unfortunately, the GoPro plugin for an extra mic requires the waterproof battery door to stay open, completely negating the waterproof features. I'm hoping to find something running off a battery pack that does not connect to the camera. I've bought NCH VideoPad editing software and hope to start working with it soon. Any advice would be appreciated! I'll be taking still shots with my T3i Canon. Thanks in advance...Eric

Hi Eric, I have little experience with outdoor microphones. Sometimes I use a Rode lavalier microphone and use it on a recording device. Maybe a recording device like the Tascam DR 05 or the Zoom H1 would be suitable for you. They record autonomously, but you can also connect microphones.

I use a Sony Handy cam for most filming mainly use the go pro for under water and boating shots .I started with Bolex 8mm back in the 19 60s .editing is the hardest part .I doubt that I'll ever get all my movies edited .

Great tips, thanks. However, not everyone owns or can afford to purchase a good spec laptop that is capable of running Davinci Resolve, etc. Thus, they have no alternative option but to use a tablet or smartphone for editing. Even though I've only recently purchased a GoPro, I'm not certain that I'd purchase another one. For those of us that have problems with our fingers, e.g. the on/off switch is difficult to press, and opening the battery compartment is a real struggle. GoPro designers don't seem to think about people with disabilities.

Biggest GoPro mistake for me (so far) buying the wrong size SD card. A quick Google search said a 32gb SD card could hold approx 3.5hrs video, so I bought one. Only to find out it will only hold 57mins of video.

When it comes to editing, I edit 90% on an iPad these days, including customer work. I use LumaFusion, and yes it's not even close to Premiere Pro or DaVinci, but it's actually pretty solid. I've delivered 10 videos to a local company, 7 of them edited in Premiere, and 3 in LumaFusion, and not a single person has noticed a difference. Only social media stuff, but still a pretty solid program. For more in depth stuff, or longer videos I would edit on a desktop for sure, but for day to day work and quick jobs, the iPad and LumaFusion changed my workflow for the better

The biggest problem I had as a beginner was saving the video. The go pro subscription helps out a lot with that. But he's right, you need a computer. I need to upgrade.

My first & only mistake: buying Hero 12 & Max together & now I cant use both together. Gopro App can only support one camera at a time. Not worried about next 10 mistakes as I will be returning BOTH.I will be buying DJI & INSTA haha

the battery just doesnt last. i had a gopro hero silver the battery was draining per seconds. i want a camera i can record for bursts of 10-20 minutes no worry battery be dead or losing footage or camera didnt save.

Very good video, thank you very much, I was waiting to hear during what bitrate to export a video with gopro (with the simple cameras, with 20,000 bitrate the video came out good but on the GoPro the image was pixelated) I would like to see some similar videos from your channel at some point as well as 1) how to plan some shots for a video of mine (eg you said at some point in the video, that you should do panoramic shots, close-ups, etc. This you could sometime do it as a stand alone video tutorial) 2nd) How do you organize the editing etc 3rd) What cameras and equipment does one need in a travel video 4th) settings etc. (although I have seen this on your channel for GoPro) Once again, many congratulations on your very good work.
