Thank you Simon, I really like your videos. You had explained a lot of details that i need. I'm wondering could i import a kick drum sound and use it as a sound module for trigger on acoustic bass drum when i playing metal gig. If it could, should i keep the usb memory plugged in or it could download from the USB memory and i can unplug after that? I also use background sample for band performance. I need a click sound in monitoring and output the backing track with out the click. Could it replace my laptop+sound interface combination?

Hi. Yes you could - thats one of the main things that many metal drummers do. You don't need to leave the USB drive in as the sample is imported into the memory of the module. You can route the click just through to the headphones and you can also stream backing tracks from the USB complete with click (search for Guide Audio) but if you are doing that you will need to leave the USB drive is as it streams the audio to save you filling the internal memory. It works great, and is perfect for replacing a laptop for live work.

Hello Simon, thank you for all the tutorials. I was wanting to know what the difference is (DTX-PRO) between an insert effect versus FX1, FX2. Does the insert effect go to the entire kit or can it be routed to individual pads like FX1 and FX2? Thank you :)

Hi. The easiest way of looking at it is that any FX on FX1 or FX2 can be controlled in real time by the Modifier Effect knob on the front of the module - turn it up, turn it down, and you'll hear the change in the amount. Each channel (kick, snare) can be assigned a different amount (by using the InstSend control on the mixer page), but the overall amount is controlled by the Modifier Effect knob. The Insert FX are preset (set up by you) as to the amount on each channel there is on a particular kit. The Insert FX are NOT controlled by the Modifier knob. So you choose your effect depending on whether you will be wanting to adjust the real time amount as you are playing. If you do, use FX1 or FX2. If you want to preset it, use insert FX. Also, the types of FX are different on each, so it just really depends on what you want the finished kit to sound / react / perform like. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. So, you are saying that there really are 3 (not counting the master effects) different effects that you can assign to each pad in a drum kit... but the insert effect is not controlled by the modifier knob. I'm in particular interested in the distortion, lo-fi, and bit crusher effects but they are in the MFX group and I wasn't sure if those effects can then be routed to one pad, or do they get assigned to the entire kit. @@edruminfo

@@sierragold Master FX get applied to the WHOLE kit, so you cant just assign one pad to it. And yes, you are correct - there are in effect three FX processors that can be applied to each pad - FX1, FX2 and Insert.

Awesome! I'm going to go ahead and purchase a DTX8K kit then. It would be of advantage to Yamaha if they made it clear in the manual that this was the case, as it's a huge jump in functionality FX-wise over the Roland modules. This means essentially unlimited modification/editing of the kits voices-- really incredible! Thank you again for your detailed answers :)@@edruminfo

hi simon the multi layer and round robin is that avail with the pos sensing snare for this i think the snare and ride will be killer and the workhorse kit for me as i layer up vst rooms normally but the snare still bugs me a bit, will you be doing a vid on that, many thanks j

@@edruminfo yes im thinking where do you get the 40 samples to load in im a bit vague on that, i use vsts, is it worth just using te brain to trigger vsts like ssd5 or do you think sd3 is already set up with all the layers in the vst, your cobolo example sounded like an acoustic kit in the internal dynamics and realism

@@Bcwilderness For the ones in the video I used a VSTi. I just created a midi file of hits so I could get all the dynamics I wanted, played them through my VSTi of choice. Took the audio file and chopped up each hit, and loaded them in, having named them in a particular way so the module puts them in the correct place. There's an official video coming soon that we filmed a couple of months back to explain how you load them.
