Love the breakdown of the brand's history. My only hesitation is that some if these brands (Hermes, Burberry, etc.) have very prominent logos or garish brand printing, which goes against old money fashion (understated).
@RPanda3S Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I expected Antonio to mention that the higher quality (and more expensive) selections from these brands do not carry the logo so prominently. But I'm not sure if that's true, and would like to hear about it from the man himself. "Old money" isn't really a style that I'm invested in, but that's what I've heard. Would appreciate anyone who can confirm or deny my understanding.
@thegentlemanplayer9689 Жыл бұрын
Burberry plaid is ignored over here, it was destroyed by market stalls selling everything in it. We wouldn't entertain it now. Predominantly far east and americans buying it. If you had ever had the joy of going to Hermes and the attitude of the sales assistance unless known to them, move on. All these brands have overpriced logo junk and very expensive classics. Zegna suit and blazer, gorgeous fabrics, and timeless classics. But you need to understand the various sub brands under the overall business. Much like RL with polo, purple etc. The Polo horse is as tacky as any logo, which honestly leaves RL really only supplying Purple label.
@besnyj Жыл бұрын
Yes that over logo stuff really sucks but I've heard that many of these brands will have stuff of even better quality but without the logo for those like us looking for it and willing to pay the slightly higher price
@richardcostello36011 ай бұрын
It's the same as RM Williams.......the cheap end are labelled on the pull tabs and soles.....the high quality boots have not got ANY overt labels (you have you customer file number written on the inside tongue)

We Gen Xers have a soft spot for Polo. It was THE uniform for us in our teen years in the 80s. I worked for weeks to save up for a Polo oxford dress shirt. Now I still buy Polo especially when I see a sale, seasonal clearance or get to an outlet store. Not quite the same quality as the vintage pieces I have but some of it is still better than the flimsiness of other "high end" brands. A few years ago I was at an upscale thrift in Vancouver. I was wearing the green Polo Golf ball hat that came with the cologne back in the 90s. A young Asian man came up and asked if I would sell it to him. I politely declined because it was a sentimental gift. I have a piece or two from some of the other brands mentioned but my heart is always with Polo.

If there is a part 2, you should probably add Aquascutum to that list. They began on Regent St. since the 1850s and have outfitted Royalty, politicos and the best dressed English celebrities such as Michael Caine since their inception. While Burberry caught the public's attention, and has benefitted tremendously from their superior marketing campaigns, Aquascutum outfitted the English Army with trench coats in WWI and WWII and their waterproof wool fabric (their invention) was used in their coats for officers in the Crimean War. Their quality is their hallmark more than their fashion status is. When Edmund Hillary first scaled Mt. Everest he did so having been outfitted by Aquascutum. They also have their own unique club check pattern that is a great scarf alterntative to all those ubiquitous Burberry ones both real and fake. I have a vintage lambswool overcoat of theirs that might just be my very favorite article of clothing that I have ever owned. It has held up incredibly well despite being my main winter coat for many years now.

A fun fact on the Burberry trench coat. Back in WW1 they were worn mostly by officers and other higher military personell and if they got shot folks would risk their head and run out into no mans land to get the coat off them. That’s how good they were back then. Mostly due to the conditions in the trenches and they were waterproof and durable.
