If you ever do a "List of Player Types to Play With" make sure to include the Following: The Loaner: This guy has a Bag of Holding (or a Crown Royal bag), which has enough sets of dice to equip all of the players, just in case someone forgot theirs or doesn't own any. That being said, they are considerate enough to just bring out 4 sets for themselves, unless they need to borrow a 5th dice of some type (although they might ask for a quick loan from someone already using another one of their sets). Possible variant - Quick Loaner, for when someone already has a set, but needs extra dice of a certain type so that they don't need to try to remember all of the previous numbers when making a roll. The Librarian: This guy has all of the relevant books for the game needed to play it, and in the physical form as well, or they can quickly access the electronic information needed for the situation. Got a new guy trying to build their character, the Librarian will loan them the book, so that they can get ideas in creating their character. Helpful DM/Veteran Player: When there's a new guy in the group, the last thing you want is them dragging the rest of the game down. These guys give him/her advice on how to play their character to their full potential. Random Character Maker: This guy has at least 3-5 character sheets pre-made, with relevant information listed, all different characters. However, they don't use them themselves, except in the cases where their guy gets killed off or a new campaign is starting. Instead, when a new guy comes in, and has no clue what to do, the RCM shows them the pre-filled character sheets (except name/exact alignment) and allows the new guy pick a character they like. Secondary DM: In a situation where the main DM has creativity block, or is out due to sickness/injury, and can't DM for several weeks, this guy has their own campaign ready to go. Granted, it might be a simpler storyline compared to the Main one, but it buys the main DM time needed to think things out/recover.

My boyfriend is a campaign killer. He is a phenomenal DM, but uses all of his infinite knowledge to accidentally create characters who are BROKEN AF. He told me a story once where he built a character that politically manipulated everyone in his party, built a secret army of undead and took over the planet, killed the player characters, and ascended to godhood. He broke the game so badly with his strategy that he laid on the DM that the entire setting was destroyed, the game was completely broken, and his character was built ENTIRELY within DND rules. The character I’m mentioning was deliberately game breaking, but after that, his game-breaking character skill carried through without him meaning for it.

Yup. This is my party.... Specifically my Cleric. Everyone was new to DnD, save for me and our DM. The DM didn't even try to help the group create their characters despite them not even knowing the basics, so I had to help them out all the day before the campaign. (DM also refused to continue the campaign past an hour and a half and we spent the rest of the time just sitting around on our phones.) I helped everyone create a fleshed out character that could provide the DM with hooks, taking care not to force the players into making the character how I'd make them, even if their decisions were not optimal for the party. The cleric refused to work with me on her character, saying she had already made one for the DnD club she was a part of. The day of the first session came and she arrived with her cleric, which we discovered was at level 1, instead of 3 which we were starting at, causing our healer to be instantly oneshot. The DM didn't bother helping her fix her sheet so that it was level 3, so I attempted to help her out. The moment I began describing Channel Divinity: Turn Undead, she responded with, "I don't care, that sounds boring." And continued the rest of the session at level 1. Luckily, it wasn't a combat heavy campaign. Around the 50 minute mark, our Cleric, Druid, and Ranger left the table to go to the backyard and play with the DM's dog. The DM ignored it and continued with the 3 of us that remained. Then, the DM told us to roll for religion, which none of us had high proficiency in. But, we remembered how much our Cleric had been bragging about how high her religion was, and called her back in to roll. She asked us how to roll for Religion, and I finally took a look at her sheet to point to her proficiencies, only to find that she hadn't filled out, written, or chosen any of her proficiencies, features, or starting equipment. We ended up rolling ourselves, and she went back to playing with the dog. Sometime after that session, our DM told us on Discord that she'd scrapped the campaign in favour of a Persona campaign. She had been pushing it for a while, even during the first session, but I kept suggesting not to, since none of our group knew a single thing about the Persona franchise, save for the DM, the Cleric, and I, and she wanted to modify the DnD system to accomodate personas, which I advised strongly against, since she had no DnD experience aside from watching Critical Role and DMing the one session. It's been about half a year and I've heard no word of any progress on that Persona campaign, so I can only assume she got stuck at trying to modify the system and lost interest or gave up. I've tried getting my friends together for a campaign I've already written, but none of them want to try it.

That wasn't gonna stop him, he doesn't back down from a fight, no matter the odds I wrapped my tail (Tiefling) around him stop him... telling him to stand down... little bastard bit the tip. I slammed him into the ground... he rolled a nat trying to brace himself. Broke his neck and split his skull open... leaving him with 1 HP When I went to try stabilize him... as I did he stole a bottle off me... and drank it (think it was a health potion)... he died a very painful, painful dead due to it being poison... bleed from his eyes, mouth, nose and ears... his face melted away, as did the rest of his flesh (by this point he left in a huff) and became a puddle on the ground... to which our Dragonborn's pet wolf... began to drink the remains. I think powerful homebrew characters should only be reserved for people who actually prefer heavy roleplaying, and whose power doesn't make their characters what they are. In fact, they view their power as a burden of responsibility they wanted nothing to do with, but alas their circumstances aren't of their own choosing.
@TarsonTalon5 жыл бұрын
@@samanthastahl1549 Only allow players who have an established history of good roleplay, or are fixated on good roleplay and present an excellent backstory, to play homebrew characters. Specifically, characters that add more to your campaign's depth more than they take away, in terms of more things to do vs. things made easier to do. If the homebrew character does not actually want anyone to find out they're a monster, for instance, then the fact they are powerful means nothing in combat because they will be trying to keep themselves a secret, thus holding back. I like how Critical Role does things, where each player character essentially brings a mini campaign to the table, and the DM ties their stories into the story they want to tell. The goal of the player playing this kind of character should be to retire them as an NPC eventually, perhaps with the mind that they will use them when they are the DM, making the next campaign full of references to what happened in the previous campaign. Perhaps they are a benevolent force, or the big bad, in the next campaign. I think a good rule of thumb is, if the player who made the homebrew character is perfectly willing to fight or encounter that character if it was an NPC against the party, then it's likely a homebrew that could add something more to the campaign. If they are hesitant, then it's likely overpowered and will wreck whatever story you're trying to make.

Oh that one really is the worst. I had someone do that at Gen Con last year when playing a new game system called Wrath & Glory (a Warhammer 40k game). He was a beta tester who constantly corrected the GM, who was using the final version of the rules. Causing lots of confusion all around, especially for me who never played this game system. I think the Tactician is the most okay of them. They just need to be open about their intent and learn to except that it doesn't align with everyone else's. Or look for a group that has a focus more to his needs. But the vanishing act. Now that's the worst.

At the same time, when someone's playing a caster and doesn't have a stat that's actually high enough to cast their spells, that player needs to be hit with something. You're playing a wizard, not a commoner. Stat accordingly To be real, I get the "I'm not *that* kind of thief" types, but casters have a much stricter stat requirement than non-casters. Without spells, they are essentially useless. I mean, dude doesn't have to put a 17 in it, but at least like a 14 or something, so he can actually do *something*

@Liches and Losers yea im fine with other players that like to joke around and have fun together. But then there's the "solo joker" who spends almost as much if not more time making out-of-game jokes and inappropriate or even NSFW comments than they do actually playing. There almost never in-character and most of the time what they're joking about isn't even relevant to what's happening in-game. Also, doesn't help if some of there "jokes" are just an excuse to insult other PC's /players without actually doing it in-game so no one can technically react to it.

@@dexterisawesomerapmusic As a DM, my answer would be pretty simple and straightforward. Allow them to kill one important, well connected person with resources. After they manage this and a couple of ingame weeks pass, revel in the fear instilled in them by the countless headhunting mercenaries hired by the newly resurrected person as they sweep the area, mercilessly and relentlessly hunting them down as they themselves experience the terror of someone unable to come close to putting up an adequate resistance against an overwhelming foe. In other words, actions have consequences. Allow players to experience the true weight of said consequences and (at least in my experience) they either learn prudence or learn that the campaign I'm running isn't what they are looking for.

@@adras98 Why 3.5e over Pathfinder, though?
@InfernosReaper5 жыл бұрын
@@feritperliare2890 Yeah, instead of prestige classes, they just made overly niche archetypes and class talents. It's kind of a waste. Some ideas really should be prestige classes. Worse, too many classes have archetypes to fill the same role, while their balance with each other. At that point, it really should just be a prestige class type thing. Then again, seeing a prestige class was rare for most games anyway because you have to be 6+ for them, often higher, and many games you'd be lucky if you were higher than 3 starting out. Many of them would honestly be fine at the 3+ range like d20 modern's "advanced classes". So, if I were to change anything about how Pathfinder does classes(other than introduce certain 3rd party material to balance the system better better), it'd be to adjust prestige class requirements to be available sooner and convert some of those archetype package concepts into proper prestige classes like they clearly should be.

Years of that has made some players I play with weary of telling other players, let alone player characters, what it is their characters can actually. Hell, some don't even tell the GM. Some couldn't be bothered and some were afraid I'd use that information against their characters. It's like, "no dude. I want to use stuff not in that monster book and the only way I'm not going to kill everyone is if I know what the characters can do" After a while, I just gave up running.
