I was flying between LA and Oakland back when Ronnie Lott was a Raider. He happened to be on the flight. In his street clothes he looked as if he was made of steel. Very impressive. He and his incredibly beautiful wife?, (I think), spent the entire flight in the aisle visiting with a young disabled fan. No one bothered them. No one tried to get in the middle of it. It was just so cool to see them simply hanging out with this kid. Pure class.

Look at all those hits. All high impact, all CLEAN. All this fuss from knuckle dragging fans about the NFL becoming 'soft', like anything below their sternums doesn't look like jello. And when he laid a blow, he laid it viciously and CLEANLY. As a Raider fan, I didn't get to appreciate how great he was until I watched him up close elevate an otherwise mediocre Raiders team in 1991. Earned a well deserved All Pro leading the league in interceptions. But more than that, he LED. That winning attitude he brought from San Francisco permeated that defense...one of the last times the Raiders allowed less than 300 points in a season. He could do it all defensively on the football field.

There were a handful of DBs in Lott's Era that contributed to the NFL's decision to treat wide receivers as Hindu cows. Lott was one of a handful of DBs who could hit as hard or harder than linebackers and run as fast as the receivers. He was one of the most feared defenders in the league. The fact that he was on the field was already a distraction to the receivers. Receivers had to have their heads on a swivel if they still wanted to have their head when the game ended.

If im making a team from whomever I want to choose in NFL history, Ronnie Lott is my SS.
@_AvgWellInformedCitizen Жыл бұрын
I remember like it was yesterday, how nervous I would get watching any NFL team pass the ball in a 49ers game because of Ronnie Lott. He would put the kind of hit on a receiver that sent a message. Not just to a receiver, or a team, but to everybody. Ronnie Lott’s HIT WAS HIS TACKLE. He could rearrange your ribcage or back without trying, and that’s when he WASN’T playing for the interception which he always was. He was without a doubt, the SCARIEST DB in NFL history. The entire country would hold their breath watching their favorite receivers try to catch a pass - cuz here he comes from an unseen angle at top speed with his head down & shoulder squaring up… you just hoped your guy would get back up after a hit like that. And that look in his eyes… that sh*t could make your blood turn cold… Ronnie Lott is the defensive player who made receiver stats like “catch %” or “yards after completion” a significant consideration.

I was a Forty-Niner fan (in the `80s), but for the longest time I thought Ronnie Lott 'played dirty.' But after a while it occurred to me that he was just so VIOLENTLY EXCEPTIONAL at what he did.....Thanks for the memories, Niners !

Marcus Allen isn’t soft for saying he wouldn’t amputate the finger, a lot of his offensive production was catching balls outta the backfield so it hinder him tremendously

the play at the 2:00 mark really epitomizes that 81 team that won the first superbowl. so many times a guy was hit and another guy scooped up the reward. or a ball was hit and another guy intercepted it. That secondary is comparable to few and what was even more amazing is they were only Rookies (except Hicks the S who became All-Pro because of the three new rookies.) I don't think that will ever happen again in Football. I say with all my heart I have never seen a more exciting secondary than that one over the teams next four years or so.
