I spend all my holidays in Greece for years, having done my Erasmus years there, so I can give you my opinion, knowing better, as a French, this country than the "ordinary" tourist. 1) Yes, definitely tip ! Think like in the USA, tip. Simple as that! 2) NOT always true, Athens and other towns have of course touristic places, and being in contact by an employee who wants to sell his restaurant doesn't ALWAYS mean that's a touristic trap. It depends, and sometimes, I've eaten better at "touristic" tavernas than so-called 100% Greek restaurants themselves. 3) Yes, BUt it fits also for a lot of countries. Once more, it depends of the time you plan to stay and the time you plan to do the classic R, R & R. If you spend only one week, you certainly won't run all other Rodos to see everything in the "official" bucket list. 4) Avoid politic and religion? I do agree BUT, I guess it works also for a lot of countries. I'm not an American, but I guess that Americans don't like to hear tourists speaking badly about the former President, even if you're a democrat, because, well... That's not of any tourist's concern. 5) what is this BS? Okay, that's not polite, but it's like "don't say in the USA the word F*** you"!!! You can say it, but like anywhere in the world, don't be surprised if people react badly at you afterwards... Speaking Greek, I DO say it sometimes. I'm not dead, and I NEVER had any problem. 6) Driving in Greece can be a challenge ven for French drivers like me,, but respect the signal traffic anyway. And stay safe. 7) WTF is the so-called advise about alcohol? Do whatever you want as long as it's respectful and not going against the law of course. 8) I speak Greek, so that's not a problem for me, but I advise you to learn in Greek at least 4 expressions : Hello, thank you, bye, I don't understand. 9) Most of the time, yes, you'll be late, but not always. Depends where, depends whe, depends with whom. I remember in Crete, at Irakleio, this bus driver who was always in time, so funny... (at least at the departure where I used to take it) 10) Yes, Americans be prepared, cigarettes are everywhere in Greece. Theoretically it's forbidden inside, in practice, they don't care. If you call the police, they'll laugh at you ! I saw it a few years ago in Thessaloniki where there's an important French expat community. 11) And something very important that Cal McKinley didn't mention : Don't throw toilet papers in the toilet but in the trash !!! Yes, it's written everywhere, especially in touristic places of course. why? The sewage disposal facilities can't handle it because it's not built to handle it. That's not true for modern buildings, but most of Greece is like that.

I loved Greece. I lived on Astypalea, Kalymnos and Kos as well as Athens in 1980. I learned to speak Greek because in those days all the signs in Athens were in Greek. It wasn’t difficult, I just wrote down their alphabet and worked it out. I was going to go back about a year and a half ago but everyone knows what happened. How sad. Such a beautiful place. To anyone, if you have a chance, go there.
I feel like you should add. Don't flush toilet paper, don't wave with a wide open hand and don't pet the strays. Don't flash (you will be arrested). Also, in some places, it's illegal to wear pointy high heels because it damages the roads.

As a Greek, I'm positively surprised to see tourists think we're nice, haha. Maybe it's my own pessimism colouring the way I see my own people XD Though you're right, we definitely speak a lot of English (especially compared to some countries I've visited myself), most of at least being able to hold a basic conversation, and we appreciate it when you use words in Greek, like "Kalimera" or "Efcharisto". You don't have to worry about your accent, it's touching to see people try to connect in a respectful way. Very interesting video! I feel it gives future tourists a good idea of what to expect and how to prepare in order to enjoy their vacations here :)

Nice video. To the point and respectful. Yet I have two comments. Subway/metro (in Athens) comes ALWAYS on time. But don't worry if you miss it. The next one will come shortly after. Smoking is not allowed indoors anymore. Unless you find a small cafe with a couple 1-2 regulars and they have lit a cigarette outside rush hours when there are no other customers. But still they can get a fine if the police sees them. As a matter of fact we have the first smoking-free island in the world; Astypalea.
