I hate using the mic so what I used to do was find an excuse to use it early in the night so I got more confident as the night went on. My favourite was always asking about whose birthday it was. This was then followed by a queue of people coming up asking for shoutout. By the 3rd shout out the mic nerves was gone, for at least that night!

The birthday shoutout can be a curse or a blessing. Once you do one you’ll have to do 5/6 more! Loooool but it’s a good way to get over nerves

I recently got a gig where I feel mic work would work well. I'm the same though and hate it. Do you write down things as a semi "script" or just freestyle it? I can't think of a way to announce a birthday without just saying "big shout out to..."
