I grew up on Staten Island, wouldn't have it any other way. Good public schools,nice homes, friendly people, fantastic food. It really has so much to offer. Like most places you don't truly appreciate it until it's gone, I still visit but I miss actually living there. Unfortunately a lot has changed, it might be the least crowded but we liked it that way. It breaks my heart to see how developed it has become in 26 years, I cannot imagine how my mother must feel; she still remembers SI as farm land. My grandma chose SI over Brooklyn for it's nature, because it was rural but still very accessible to the city and Brooklyn. I wish that Staten Island still existed, even the SI of my early childhood would be wonderful. Let us be forgotten once again.
@petunia44745 жыл бұрын
I used to LOVE Staten Island but it's changed so much throughout the years and it is sad to see it over run with clogged roads(almost every one of them, if not, all of them) no matter which way you go. With all due respect the people have changed as well over the years. There are some wonderful humble people living there but let me tell you that they are also as nasty as they come. I never experienced any rudeness years ago but today there are too many. They look miserable too.

S Bradley There probably aren’t many places that have retained what they had 26 years ago but we know some progress is necessary if we are to be happy with life to suit our needs I guess . But being a life long Staten islander , I get it , and that Staten Island is gone . My mother , born on the lower east side before Con Edison plant was built on avenue C , lived there , the Bronx and ended up here . With all our problems of quality of life , people still come here , every year . Must be something left here that has appeal . The little precious space to live , park or enjoy must be more than they had .

Even though my grandpawnts lived in Brooklyn, I had an auntt and several cousins who lived on S.I. in the Grasmere area. I loved it there. I remember always taking the railroad to Totttenville with either my couins or grandfather when he wanted tp go see his daughter, my aunt. When he went, we would always get off at the Tottenville station and sit and talk about his station in life, how it was for him growing up, and mostly talking about the way my late father was while he was growing up, as he did on S.I. - I learned so much from that man until he passed away in 1985...and when I see videos of the Outerbridge Crossing, I think to myself what a wonderful man he was, and how meaningful and sincere he was. I wish I could turn back 40 years just to tall to him again. This is indeed a very wonderful video. THANK YOU uploading this sp very much. Your videos bring back such nostalgia to me of when I was growing up in the 1970s up until 1985, when I was last up there in the metro NYC area. I miss those days a lot.

I was born and raised in Staten Island. Lived in snug harbor ( 1 mile from the ferry ). It was a great place to grow up. Small communities where everybody knows everybody. We lived in an old Victorian style house that was built in 1886. the sailors built these homes and would house 2/3 families. I love that we were the forgotten borough, we got all benefits of living so close to NYC while still having a suburban lifestyle. Everybody looked after eachother like family. My family moved us to Florida in 2002. I was 15. I use to visit friends and family every summer for 2 months. I still have 3 close friends that I went to school with from 2nd to 8th grade. However, I would never move back though. Too expensive.

In 1981 Staten Island had the worst race riot in the history of the island and probably New York City. They don't want you to know about this. It occurred at New Dorp High School. My brother went there. They had to evacuate all of the Black kids out of the school. They had to run to the city busses that were waiting. New Dorp was a very racist section of Staten Island, like most Italian sections at that time. I don't know if it still is. Oh and Rosebank I am not leaving you people out either. That's you real Staten Island!

Did you say "infamous" Staten Island Ferry??? What do you mean about that? It's world famous. I remember they had the old green ones from Bay Ridge Brooklyn, and longer red Marine and Aviation ones from lower Manhattan.

SI Native here. How could they not mention Impractical Jokers?!!! The Jokers are from SI & went to Farrell Boys' High school, also from SI -Christina Aguiliera & Steven Seagal (action movie star). The Alice Austen House is a landmark there, many movies & videos were made there e.g. Mr. Popper's Penguins starring Jim Carey. Also Madonna's Like A Virgin video was filmed on the SI Ferry.

I lived on Staten Island. Since 1969 and it was a great place to grow up . I'm 59 now and I moved to Florida.My opinion about s.i. is that it's over crowded today .People are more arrogant than they were back in the day.Still it is the best family based part of the city to move to. Manhattan , Brooklyn queens and Bronx have more to offer as far as sites and entertainment than Staten Island, that's why it's the forgotten one

I never, ever wished I could commute from SI to NYC via subway. Are you kidding me? That ferry is the most beautiful commute on the face of the earth. It's also about 20 minutes of peace before the start, or end, of a much too busy day at work. I wouldn't have traded it for the world. When I was a child, the oldest schoolhouse in America...the same building as pictured...was called Voorhees. When was the change made? I remember my dad bringing my sister and I for walks along Henderson Avenue, the "back side" of Sailor Snug Harbor. They had cows back then and we loved to look at them. This was in the early 1950s. How about Barrett Zoo, nestled between Broadway and Clove Road, just a short walk from Forest Avenue. I don't know if it still holds true, but back in the 1950s and 1960s, the zoo boasted the largest rattlesnake collection in the world. Is that a robot voice? I hope so because it's very weird! It's a "borough" not a "borrow."

I used to live Queens and I hate it there. Subway stations are dirty and crowded. Life style was stressful. Now, I live in Staten Island and for more than ten years I live in Staten Island. I love it here. There are many places I can be enjoy. South beach, Midland beach, Gateway, Fresh pond, Forthwordworth are places I go and relax. Life style is much different from Queens. It is not crowded and parking are plenty anywhere and convenient every where to go -- shopping mall, Costco, Shoprites, restaurants are nearby. Staten Island is not a big Island, so driving to Brooklyn or New Jersey only take 10-20 mins and not traffice.I love it here.

Many of the roads in Staten Island we're unpaved years back you had to drive around with boards in your trunk because your car with sink in the clay you have to stick the boards under the tire of your car to get out of it back when also who remembers Al depies and both roller skating rinks or Bacci's on Hylan Boulevard and the old Pizza Town AKA Gennaro's who just closed very sad I will miss it

And, Snug Harbors history, the sailors. We wish we were still the forgotten.... it was nicer, more unique, mom and pop stores and eats, now its crowded and rents have gone up, mental cases moving in. It's always better to be less known. Oh and No... Islanders do not want a subway system. Too much traffic and less la d and trees now thanks to being more known.

Staten Island has a VERY RICH CINEMATIC HISTORY with The Corleone Home from The Godfather - and the Church where Connie's child was baptized with the big steps from The Godfather - residing there. Also where Rodney Dangerfield's Easy Money was filmed (he even got a Wedding Cake from Alfonso's. AND where John Travolta's boys would take The Verrazano Narrows Bridge to in Saturday Night Fever. Also, WITH the large Italian-American population it's known as a major Pizza Borough, featuring some the BEST Pizza in NYC with places such as Denino's, Lee's Tavern and Joe & Pats! Finally, Todt Hill is pronounced Toad Hill NOT Todd Hill. GOD BLESS and STAY FRESH! ;)
