#11: so cool! Is Edgar Allan Poe’s home still a museum in the Fordham section? Robert Moses continues to be the one who made the Bronx, and places like it around the country, what it is today. That was not a compliment.

This was interesting! You highlighted several structures I had no idea existed! Probably have seen them from street level only, without looking up! Thanks!

I went to look at two apartments in Riverdale. The first one was the basement of a house that had three families living in it. I killed 9 cockroaches while I was talking to the realtor. A baby was screaming the whole time. The second, the owner admitted to me that criminals had broken into the house, sometimes during the day. One day - the same guy broke in twice... during the day. She also said "We only smell the water treatment plant about 2 days per week." Ended up moving to Tarrytown.

Being in the Bronx we just say "Downtown" to refer to Manhattan Even though yes, once in Manhattan downtown is downtown Manhattan and uptown is uptown Manhattan lol It makes sense I promise 🤣

Born and raised in Bklyn…. I was skeptical of this list but it was legit. I never heard “yerrr!” but I’m in my 50’s so maybe that’s something the kids say these days. Good list though 😊

NYC casts its' shadow over the whole tri-state area because everybody gets sucked into it, whether you want to be a part of it or not. It's modern day Babylon. Look at the graffiti and you'll see more scripture than at church.

Noo, noooo. "The City" is all five boroughs. When you're in upstate NY, NJ, or any other state, even out of the country, and you say you're from "the City" with a capital "C", you are always referring to NYC and most people will know by your accent, which you won't know you have one until someone outside the City tells you.

#11: W. Queens (Queens Proper) used to be much bigger. Nassau County to the east (AKA For me, E. Queens) used to be a part of Queens, but then broke off when W. Queens consolidated into NYC & Nassau County (E. Queens) was formed. Thus Queens was split into 1 city, 6 towns, 150+ Villages, & 150+ Hamlets. Fun fact, the Rockaways used to be owned under the town of Hempstead, but was later shifted over to the town of Jamaica, W. Queens. I mean, if you go to the DMV on Hempstead-Bethpage Tpke./Hempstead Tpke./NY-24, Bethpage, NY, you’ll see, on the wall, “Oyster Bay, Queens Co.”. Also, towns were: Jamaica, Flushing, Newtown (now Elmhurst), Hempstead, North Hempstead, & Oyster Bay. LIC was the only city for Queens at the time. So there’s that history. If Nassau were to be its own Borough, or rejoin Queens, then NYC: 1. Would be much bigger than before. 2. NYC would have 13 Chinatowns.

As a North Carolina native, it's worth mentioning that a lotta them words ain't unique to NYC. "Yerrr/Yurrr", "A Slice", "Uptown/Downtown", "Buggin", "Grill", "Groceries", "Mad", "Dumb", "Stupid", "Take it There", and "Dead Ass" get said a lot down here. But then again, it's also worth mentioning that a lotta them words is more unique to the East Coast than other regions (keeping in mind I done been all over a good bit of America) as I don't hear them too much (if at all) when I leave the East Coast...

You didn't show all of Queens only part of it. These are the more populated city-like regions, You left out Douglaston, Bayside, Whitestone, College Point to name a few. It always was for decades the most diverse borough in NYC. But now more than ever. It used to be great.

Riverdale resident here. And grew up here (two decade absence when I lived on "the" UWS. I and my friends ALWAYS called it a part of the Bronx. I think only new immigrants say otherwise to avoid thinking they somehow moved downscale. However, my Bronx friends were the opposite. They never let me use The Bronx when we were out. Mostly, i did because no one has any clue where or what Riverdale is.

Our son moved there 16 years ago to stay from San Diego, California. A tiny bare room in a house of random strangers here costs 1500 while he pays 2000 for a 1 bedroom in Brooklyn.
