True story: My family and I were at Lake Sammamish that sunny, hot Sunday in July of 1972 when Ted Bundy took a couple women using the “broken arm” ploy. There were thousands of people on that beach that day and we didn’t see anything but we were there and I clearly remember being there that day even though I was only 6 years old at the time.

Uh...Rob, I'm not advocating living through life sheltered all the while, lol. There's a massive difference between living in the world, and living dangerously. Hitch hiking is a risk no one should take imo, and one gets in that position when other poor choices were made prior to.

once a guy tried to kidnap a friend. he duct-tapped her wrists and then wrapped duct tape around her head to cover her mouth. but he had so much crap in his trunk he couldn't cram her in. he was cussing and making noise so people starting opening doors around the apartment complex, they were in a parking lot. he drove off leaving my friend sitting there in a pile of his belongings, tears streaming, nose bloody. turns out he was an ex co-worker that had a thing for her combined with a drinking problem. he was arrested the next morning, sleeping it off in his car.

I was 23 and driving my black decommissioned police interceptor and saw a really cute hispanic girl walking on the frontage road of I-45 in Houston. I pulled over and offered her a ride. I guess she thought I looked like someone she could trust so she smiled and got in. We had a lot of fun and great conversation and she gave me a kiss on the cheek and a big hug when we got to her place (actually pretty far away, I'm glad I was there to drive her). I wish the world was as innocent as I am.

I was 24 when I picked up a female hitchhiker in 97,I ate her liver with some pinto beans and a nice boones farm wine😜who knows where thoughts come from,but seriously I'm glad you helped them out you may have saved her from a very bad person,I've picked up 4 or 5 hitchhiker s here in Tennessee and they was nothing short of nice and courteous and so was I, probably can't do that these days but oh well I know I done a good deed have a great week and God bless

The one and only time I hitch hiked , I was picked up by a teacher from my school! Needless to say the lecture I got was enough to make me NEVER hitchhike again! Not because I was scared of crazies, but I was scared of being picked up by another teacher lol ( she called my mom 🙄)

One time me and my 7 cousins were playing hide and seek in the dark outside when me and my smallest cousin were hiding in a truck. A African American drunk guy came and started to pull open the big black gate seperating the street from house. Thank god the gate was locked. The man started to shake the gate. All of my cousins were already inside. I stood Up in the truck and told my cousin to come on. I didnt know how to open the door so I jumped out of the window. Once I was inside, I told everyone were was my little cousin. He came back inside and told us the man grabbed him but he managed to run inside. I cant imagine what would have happened if the gate wasnt locked.

One day after school I was waiting for a friend near a school (my old skl) and she bailed on me so I decided to go home by myself so this lady saw me waiting for a taxi and asked where I was going I told her just a couple minutes from here and my location (not exact location) she offered me a drop but I hesitated a lot I was 13 at the time, she said I can wait in the car if I wanted to while she picked up her daughter just across the street and those words left ease in me knowing there would be a child in the car too I got in the car and when she came back we drived off midway driving she said thank God she got to me sooner when getting out of her car cuz she saw a man had been staring at me for half an hour straight and saw him shoving a knife in his pocket. While waiting for her daughter's school to over she was happy she noticed me sooner. After that my eyes went cold and my body stiffened in utter fear I was very thankful for her and before exiting the car she gave me a number of a taxi service that her sister owned and said it would be better for my safety to travel home with someone trustworthy enough up until that point I never ever travel alone again my mom always picks me up for my safety or I go with a group of friends who will always be there with me

I hitchhiked once in high school. I had to take the train and then walk on a highway without much of a sidewalk for like an hour and a half and I wasn't trying to be late again. The driver was a Hispanic guy. Only wanted five bucks for the ride.

My dad always picked up hitchhikers. This was the 70s-80s, so it was more normal. But my dad wore a .44 in a shoulder holster, and was an MP during Veitnam. He also drove a truck and would usually, weather fitting, have them ride in the bed of the truck - also normal back then. These things no doubt prevented trouble from ever starting

My dad and his best friend were driving back home from Phoenix (4 hours home) and picked up a hitchhiker. They had some small talk before they guy got really creepy,he started saying things like "what if I pulled a knife right now. That'd be crazy huh. Can't believe you picked me up how do you know I'm not crazy. I do have a knife" and he took out a pocket knife,and my dad looked at his friend and the guy in the back laughed,my dad pulled his gun he keeps in the car out and said "I bet I shoot faster than you stab" and the guy was like "woah dude I was kidding I'm just kidding it was a joke" and they pulled over telling him to get out my dad said he'd never seen a man look so afraid and move so fast

I've never hitched but I have had taken rides offered to me on 2 separate occasions. Both times I was in a situation I could really use a ride. One time I had just gotten back to the airport from a trip and my ride home was a no show, I had about a 3 hour walk home in 100 degree weather with my luggage. A guy offered me a ride at the exit of the airport and I took it. Luckily he was just a good dude and took me straight home. The other time I was walking in 0 degree weather to the store because my car wouldn't start and I needed some things. Again a guy pulled up and offered to get me out of the cold. He took me to and back from the store, and again, just a good dude. I didn't get weird vibes from either driver and knew that if either tried anything I'd put up a good fight, and if they really did try anything I may prove to be the crazy one in the vehicle. I would never condone jumping in cars with strangers, but there are some good folks out there. So to those 2 kind souls out there that did me a solid when they didn't have to... thanks again!

The only time I got a ride from a stranger is when my friend and I ran out of gas on our country joy ride and a cop stopped. We thought we were out of oil lol. So he dropped us off at her house and didn’t even talk to our parents. But, the whole way back we got a solid scolding about taking care of your car, no walking in the middle of nowhere, no hitchhiking. We were only 16. Good thing he didn’t find out the car didn’t have power steering and we both sat on the drivers side to turn the wheel together!
