Great lesson, as always, and good examples. Also, very pleasant teaching manner. ♥ If I may, I do have a question: when you introduce the /aʊ/ pronunciation of O (4:50), you start by saying that the first part of the diphthong is the sound /ʌ/ (as in 'cut', 'rough' and so forth). Does this mean the transcription of the diphthong in IPA as /aʊ/ (and not /ʌʊ/ as one might expect), which you do use aftewards, is slightly imprecise but still in use conventionally, with the first, onset vocalic sound in that diphtong being in fact /ʌ/?
@EnglishwithLiz Жыл бұрын
Hi Pat. Yes, you're right. According to phoneticians, the first sound of this diphthong can be notated as /a/. But in standard English, does not exist as a phoneme on its own. So for practical purposes to get the sound right, I use /ʌ/ on the chart. This usually works well. Love ❤️ & 🕊Peace. Liz

Thank you Johar. Unfortunately, there is no order, because KZbin suggests videos in a random order. @@EnglishwithLiz like I don’t understand the vowels and consonants in words like e.g brilliant how spell it pick up the right vowels and consonants sound I really need to know!!!
@Phonetician_2 жыл бұрын
Hello dear Liz You are saying ʊ has longer sound than ə🤔 but what I've learnt that ə is longer and glides towards ʊ Or ʊ: sound? You've already taught the same before. I wonder are both ways accurate? Or it depends on the speaker's choice?
@EnglishwithLiz2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam. If you are referring to diphthongs. The general rule is that when we glide the two sounds together, the first of the two sounds is slightly shorter than the second. Hope this helps. 🙂
@Phonetician_2 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishwithLizthat's what I was asking Liz. how's it possible? Coz Liz I've learnt this everywhere that The first vowel is usually longer and stronger than the second one in the English language. Accent coaches also teach the same. You also taught the same in your video before.

Can you please help us to do this kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3jGe6SQnMh9hsk in British ? American English is everywhere and it is hard to find British teachers that offer kind of lessons.
@EnglishwithLiz Жыл бұрын
Hi Bizuru. Sorry for the delay in replying, but YT put your comment in the junk! Yes, I have already done this, but I'll produce a video on an up to date news article for you next week. I watched the beginning of the video you sent me and it is clearly not a good idea for an American teacher to comment on a British BBC article, as she made mistakes and taught the wrong information. For instance, she gave the wrong pronunciation and meaning of the word 'row' in the opening paragraph☹️. In this context, the pronunciation is /raʊ/ not /rəʊ/ and the meaning is an argument not a fight,. Love ❤️ & 🕊Peace. Liz
