Hi Liz, I have a silly question: why is a bʊtcher not a bʌtcher ?
@EnglishwithLiz8 ай бұрын
Hi! Good question 🤔 The change dates back to Early Modern English. It's all about what the letter u is preceded and followed by. Try Wikipedia for a fuller explanation. 🙂

There is a mistake in the pronunciation at 12:38 of the video. The word 'mouth' was also pronounced as /raʊnd/.

Thank you so much for pointing that out and thank you for watching. It's so difficult to make amendments to videos once they are uploaded but I think I have managed to blur out the incorrect phonemic spelling. Thanks again. Love❤️ & 🕊️Peace. Liz

Hi. There are 2 ways of saying the word ending of 'tissue' /tɪʃuː/ ti-shoo or /tɪs.juː/ tis-you. Both are acceptable in British English. The first is easier to pronounce. In the video, I pronounced the word as 'tis-you.' Hope this helps. Love and peace.

It was my assumption that schwa was the 'u' in mud. If it's IPA /ʌ/ then what's /ə/ all about? We don't have a schwa sound in General American English if the 'u' in 'mud' is an /ʌ/.

@EnglishwithLiz5 ай бұрын
Most U sounds are similar, but there is a greater difference between the length of vowel sounds, with British English being pronounced significantly longer than American. Some of this is owing to the additional pronunciation of ‘r’ in many American vowel sounds. Love ❤️ & 🕊️Peace. Liz

If you assign a character to every accent variation of vowel, you'll end up with 256 vowels. The IPA vowel chart is headed there. ɔ,o̞ & o are all much too close to one another to have in one language. You have to draw the line and say, 'These are the official vowel sounds and everything else is accent that you layer on top. When you write, pick the nearest official vowel sound.

Hi! teacher. U = /əs/ - Ambitious /æmˈbɪʃ.əs/, Delicious /dɪˈlɪʃ.əs/, Gracious /ˈɡreɪ.ʃəs/, Mysterious /mɪˈstɪə.ri.əs/... The U = /əs/ can also be represented by a rare other spelling "EOUS" as in righteous /ˈraɪ.tʃəs/. This your class shows us like spelling and phonetics are many inconsistent in the English language. A same spelling can represent many different phonemes and a same phoneme ( as in the sound /ɜː/ for example) can be represented by many different spellings . Studying inglish pronunciation and listening by music or watching movies doesn't work well, for a good accent, of course. It is like you fix a broken radio without an electronics´s basic knowing of it. Thank you teacher. Let's study the (RP) and sorry for any spelling mistakes. Love and peace.
